Keen to hear peoples thoughts on this...besides the GF wins. What are the matches that stick out the most in peoples minds?

Personally, Round 17 v Hawthorn (i think) was one of my favourite wins of this year..

Anzac Day 2008 v Fremantle @ Subi. To come back from roughly 30-40 points not once, but twice, sitting amongst the feral Dockers supporters flipping me the bird when we got up by 1 point.

Ever?

The year? 1989. The place? MCG - Geelong Vs. Richmond. I'm sitting with my sisiter on the old Olympic Stand benches, sun blazing, as we snack on Wagon Wheels and Leeds lemonade. We always seemed to smash the Tigers in those days (as we still normally do), but this day more beyond special. Bairstow and Buddah were on fire through the middle, Excell very handy up forward (kicking 5 for the day), Bruns bullet-like low passes hitting every target. We win by 134 points.

But line-up! Line-up! It's the Gary Ablett Show, as he takes 14 grabs and kicks 14 goals (missing 2) from 30 disposals. It's almost impossible to describe how the great man played that day - I've still seen nothing like it. The blistering runs from the wing (for those too young, think Wojo on speed) that end with 60 metre torps to goal, the brute strength breaking packs, the towering marks - the ball indeed on a string. I seriously never wanted the day to end.

When?? Year?? Round??

Round 11 2002. We were up by about 7 goals i think in the last quarter. Blues came back and hit the front thanks to a 50m penalty against Rooke. About 15 seconds left at the ball up. Ball comes out to the wing to David Clarke who kicks perhaps his best kick of his career on his left foot and hits Riccardi on the chest at about 50m out. Siren goes after he marks it. He goes back and kicks it home from about 55 on a 45 degree angle.

I kind of get bored by big wins (by 3/4 time in the 2007 grand final I was already texting people planning celebrations, and spent the entire last quarter just wishing the siren would go instead of enjoying the match) and I love come from behind and/or tight games.

My three favourite games in the past three years have been:

- 2007 preliminary final
- round 17, 2009 v Hawthorn (lost my voice and went to Melbourne International Film Festival that night unable to say hi to anyone)
- 2009 grand final

All three will remain with me forever.

2004 vs Brisbane Lions at the Cattery. About 10 degrees and raining most of the day. Great skills from both sides considering, Lions held a small lead for the first half and and we edged our way ahead by 3/4 time...last quarter all Cats and we were officially back as a force (take out 2006 please).

2007 Qualifying Final vs Kanagaroos. Starts off with Roos starting a fight in warm-up. Then we put together a clinic and smashed them by 100+ points. Still watch that one from the 2007 Victory Pack -has some fantastic team goals in this game

2007 - Aami Stadium, It was during our winning run leading upto the finals. Adelaide had moments when they'd had momentum and the crowd behind them, we dug deep and ended up getting over the line by a goal or two !?

I'll go as far too say that was our match of the yr, regardless of how our season ended.

The Hawthorn game this year was a pearler.

This question has been asked many times and the one that I remember was a game in 2000 against Collingwood at The MCG, Down by 5 goals at half time in a very wet low scoring game. Sam Newman was telling members to rip up their memberships at half time so badly the Cats palyed in the first half.

Second half seen King get on top and Linga and Buddha were terrific and we got up and won. It was an awesome game.

Top 10

1. Geelong vs Hawthorn, Round 17, 2009 - For obvious reasons.
2. Geelong vs St.Kilda, Grand Final, 2009 - For obvious reasons.
3. Geelong vs Collingwood, Round 12, 2000 - We were 5 goals down at 1/2 time and had only kicked 1 goal for the half in teeming rain, yet came back to win by less than a kick.
4. Geelong vs North Melbourne, Round 1, 1999 - Overcame a 40 point half-time deficit to win by a goal.
5. Geelong vs North Melbourne, Preliminary Final, 1994 - One of the best finals I've ever seen.
6. Geelong vs Collingwood, Preliminary Final, 2007 - Nail biter from start to finish.
7. Geelong vs Brisbane, Round 13, 2004 - The coming of age of the modern side.
8. Geelong vs Western Bulldogs, Round 16, 2006 - The second of two one point nail biters between the teams for the season. The way the ball was zooming from one end of the ground to the other was breath-taking to say the least.
9. Geelong vs St.Kilda, Round 7, 2005 - Geelong were crucified by the umpires all day, especially Goldspink (free kick tally was 23-13 for the day). Trailed all day, but ran St.Kilda off their feet in the last term and ended up winning by 3 goals.
10. Geelong vs West Coast, Round 13, 1995 - 1994 Grand Final replay. I can still remember the Eagles kicking the first 3 goals in about 5 minutes, and Karl Langdon turning around to the crowd in the Hickey Stand and holding up three fingers as if to say "that's three!" The Cats players must've seen it too, as they rallied to take a slender lead into half-time, before kicking 8.6 to nothing in the third term before winning by 52 points.

Round 6 2007 GEE v RICH
The moment it all clicked.

At that point of the season i had watched (televised) a round 3 game against Melbourne, where Geelong won fairly easily and a round 4 game where Geelong lost in a close one to Hawthorn.

The results were pretty immaterial. What seemed most important in both games was that the team had dramatically changed its game plan and style. They had gone back to a much more "traditional" Geelong style; playing on a lot, handballing, improvising. Basically free-wheeling football generally. Yet i could see that they were also coupling this style with a real physical presence around the ball. I was stoked (even though they lost to the Hawks) as this style was more enjoyable to watch and more suited to the playing group than the vaguely Brisbane and then Sydney type of game plan they had been experimenting with through 03-06.

Obviously in those two games the players hadn't completely perfected this approach yet, hence the many turn over’s that resulted in Hawthorn winning. But the Rd 6 game against Richmond was when it all came together. It clicked big time: free flowing and creative football demanding perfect execution of skills and complete accountability. Dreamy. Richmond were mauled. Geelong knew from there on their new approach was working and would work. Just ask Port Adelaide four months later.

I remember stumbling out of a Sydney pub after that Richmond match (kind of late due to delayed telecast) with a smile on my face a mile wide.

Clarke was in our best that year, could play until???

APART FROM THE 09 GF, Geelong vs Ricmond 2007 rd 6. 10 goals 1st/4, 10 goals 2nd/4, 9 goals 3rd/4, shocking last /4 only 7 goals. Even Tiger supporters applauded us. Surely this was the turning point game of the powerhouse team that is US. Record score was on the cards. Chappy had 5 in 30 mins of footy. Have never seen footy quite like it this millennium, though it was like Blighty 's Cats teams of late 80's/early 90's. The only time Tiger players sprinted was when they ran OFF the ground to be replaced!

probably the gary ablett/paul salmon show from some time in the early 90's. sure, we lost the game but ablett kicked 14 at one end, salmon 10 at the other.

Yep, we were 38 points up with 12 minutes left. Only to be trailing with 26 seconds left.

Only to win after the siren.

Yes I was at this one. Down 6.7 to 1.7 at half time in shocking conditions, then Houlihan decides to put on a clinic in the third quarter particularly and end the match with five goals.

Still down by 10 points at three quarter time, we hit the front late in the last only for Buckley to put the Magpies back in front from 50 out on the run.

Then Buddha goaled to get the Cats home.

That would've been one of the softest 50m penalties ever. I think Matty Lappin got a 9.8 from the Russian judge for that dive. :p

I was at that game with my brother and sister-in-law, who are both Carlton supporters (My sis-in-law converted my brother. Funny thing is the first year they became members, was the first year Carlton won the spoon. :D) For the first three quarters they were pretty quiet, but in the last quarter they found their voice. We were right behind Riccardi when he had that shot after the siren, and when the ball wobbled its way through for a goal, I stood up and yelled "YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" at the top of my voice, then looked down at my brother and sister-in-law with their heads in their hands. :D:thumbsu:

Showing my age, but Cats V Footscray in the 1994 QF. Billy Brownless marked with a second to go and kicked a mammoth goal after the siren to give Geelong a 5 point win. Sandy Roberts declared the "monkey was off the back" of Billy.
Sadly for Western Bulldogs we have always had the wood on them in finals.

Well...he's had.. a rock 'n' rollin' season, down and out and back he comes can he finish it off with a goal? BILLY YOU ARE KING OF GEELONG!! OHHHH MONKEYS OFF THE BACK BILLY!!!!

Am I the only one on here who didnt watch the finish to the Hawks game in round 17? wish I was able to watch it. I watched the first three quarters but then I had to go on to play my game of tennis. I wasnt very confident of winning as I knew we were down by about 20-odd but I still hoped. I lied and said my drink bottle ran out after like 20mins to go in and try and watch a bit and I saw the time was counting up so there wasnt too long left and we were down by 7. Couldnt believe it when my game finished(I wanted to get back in and watch the game that badly so I went for every wild shot and they all came off so I won 6-0 6-1 lol) and I saw the Cats singing the song. Was such a good feeling and I had one of the biggest ever smiles on my face.

I remember the 1995 final very well.

Billy had a ripper with Ablett out.
