So i've been offered an amazing job opportunity in Melbourne which i'm nearly certain i'll accept. This will mean that for the first time I will be moving away from SA (which I can only see as a positive) and will be moving to the sporting capitial of the world. This will also mean i'll have to leave family/friends etc to do this, and thats probably the thing that scares me most. The move will also mean I have to relocate my kids schooling, which shouldn't be an issue as they are only 8 and 5.

So, my question is, who here has done it, and what were your experiences?

(also, whats a good area in Melb, close to Williamstown?)

Moved from Melbourne to Sydney in my early 20's for work and stayed for almost a decade.

When I got there I knew barely anyone save from a handful of work colleagues and it was fairly daunting at the time. I was single so was able to house share with three other blokes who I had never met before - from there developed friends, social life etc.

Would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

Imagine it would be different with wife and kids however children should enable you to meet other people via school activities etc.

As for suburbs, what sort of schooling are you looking at for the kids?
If its private, then most of the decent schools for 10 yo + are in the Eastern suburbs.

I moved over from Adelaide to Melbourne about 5 years ago...

However, I must admit it was in rather easy circumstances. Firstly, I had a gilfriend in Melbourne, (we'd met a year earlier and had visited each other numerous occasions) so I moved into her house. Secondly, there are a lot of ex-pat Adelaidians over here in Melbourne, and I already had a healthy number of people I knew living here.

My girlfriend and I only recently broke up (after 6 years), and although we still see each other and we are working through our 'stuff', I can't see myself moving back to Adelaide regardless of what happens with her.

If we broke up maybe two or three years ago I may have moved back to Adelaide, but I am rather settled now. I have met a lot of friends over here, and let's face it... Melbourne has a lot more going on than Adelaide!

Also.. and this has been my experience, the best thing about moving from Adelaide, is actually the weekends that you go back to Adelaide! For me this normally involves something to do with my bands, or seeing family (although my family are on the Yorke Peninsula rather than the city) - In these cases there is normally a good reason why I am back there, it tends to be party time central, and then when the weekend finishes, I say goodbye and I am out of there!

Leaves only good memories of the ol' A-town. Great!

i've done it several times, from Sydney -> Dublin -> Belfast -> Bathurst -> Melbourne -> Sydney with a few intermittent periods of staying in Sydney in between.

but each one of them has been as a single male in his early to mid (now late ) 20's with no real responsibilities so it's never been a problem.

each time i've just moved into a share house, execpt in melbourne when me and a mate shacked up and went into an unfurnished rental property. buying the furniture was a pain but we did it relatiavely cheap....

but with wife and kids it's obviously a bit of a different ball game, one that i have zero advice for.....

Moved to Hobart about 13 years ago and stayed for two years. Loved the place just too small for the niche I work in.

As many of you are probably bored of hearing, I'm moving to Melbourne next year. I'll be at uni and studying at Swinburne or, more likely, RMIT. How did you guys go about finding share houses? I know Gibbsy and another two or three mates from primary school, but aside from an uncle, that's it. Do you just look on Gumtree? Check out noticeboards at uni? I'm not too nervous and I can always stay on campus (?) for a semester... but I'm just curious.

(I want to live in an inner 'burb. Hawthorn is cool and acceptable but no further out than Northcote.)

i'm not really worried about the kids with the move, as they should adapt pretty quickly. the wife i'm not so sure. she's always lived pretty close to family and i'm not sure how she will go out of her comfort zone

i should be fine, i've always wanted to live in melbourne, so this is a dream come true for me.

trying to find housing close to williamstown at the stage. don't want to live too far from work, but at the same time, i don't want to be a street away. looking around the altona meadows area - is this a good area??

Have an investment property in Sanctuary Lakes. Reasonably close to Williamstown, reasonably priced, close to a redeveloped Point Cook and not a bad area. Maybe worth a look

You could do a lot worse closer to the city, than somewhere like Northcote. Follow a train line out of the city and the run in is quick and easy, and the rent goes down significantly.

I honestly don't think I could ever move away from Melbourne (or at least Victoria) for the footy alone. No matter what is going wrong in my life, I know that between March and September Hawthorn will be playing and idk but even when I am going through a bad stage it gives me some stability. Might seem stupid but it's true :thumbsu:

Something of an overstatement.

Perhaps Launceston would interest you?:p

Doesn't sound stupid at all mate.

Having a pretty shit year myself. But one thing I know I can bank on is playing footy each week and going to watch the Blues play (despite our shit form). :thumbsu:

Live at RMIT village or whatever for a semester to get some contacts first. When you've had 6 months to build up your contact-base, you'll regularly hear of friends/friends-of-friends looking for house-mates and that way you'll have an idea as to whether it's a house you want to live in.

Most uni's will also have a housing office where they'll try and help you arrange accomodation in a share-house if you need it.

Don't have preconceived ideas about what particular suburb you want to live in either (especially if you're not from Melbourne and are just relying on stereotypes). Other factors are much more important.

 soulless suburbia with no infrastructure. Give a wide berth
5 min drive to newly expanded train station and point cook town centre.

Its suburbia for sure but not everyone wants to be an arty type living in fitzroy north
