Other incidents assessed

Contact between the Adelaide Crows’ Brad Crouch and North Melbourne’s Shaun Atley from the first quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. The ball is bounced in the centre and Atley takes possession, when he is tackled by Crouch. Crouch takes Atley to ground and a free kick is paid to the North Melbourne player for a dangerous tackle action. It was the view of the panel there was no significant contact for Atley’s head to the ground, with primary contact being to his shoulder in the tackle and that the free kick at the time addressed the incident. No further action was taken.

Contact between the Sydney Swans’ Callum Mills and the Brisbane Lions’ Jarrod Berry from the second quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. Berry was preparing to take a mark with Mills coming to the contest and seeking to spoil the ball. Mills has his arm straight for the spoil attempt and does not use a swinging arm action when high contact is made. A 50-metre penalty was paid at the time for the high contact. It was the view of the panel that Mills was making a legitimate attempt to spoil and no further action was required.

Contact between the Sydney Swans’ Lance Franklin and the Brisbane Lions’ Nick Robertson from the third quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. It was the view of the panel that the force used was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

Amazing how a player can get off with just a fine for striking someone while players that tackle a bit too roughly get suspended for a week, ridiculous.

The MRP is a complete mess that lacks common sense, just like the rules and interpretations.

The Jarrad Waite decision is a joke. Wasn't even a sling. Its unfortunate the he hit his head but in no way should he get a week for that.
Agree with this. Lynch had one arm free, and made no effort to protect himself. As far as I'm concerned, Lynch contributed to his own injury. Waite should never have been charged.

And I'm an Adelaide supporter...

Rubbish. There were 2 movements in that tackle and Waite caused the bloke to miss the rest of the game. If anything he's lucky it wasn't high impact

Koby medium impact when the player played out the game? and the player landed on his shoulder before his head whipped into the ground. Also had an arm free but chose to hold onto the ball instead of bracing.

edit . saw the post above, so the suspensions are the same even though 1 player played out the game and the other didnt ...

I think Waite is incredibly stiff. There is nothing he has done any differently to hundreds of other tackles. Duty of care is fine however there will be incidents in a contact sport. Given Gibson chose to lay a bump / shepherd and cleaned up a player a couple of weeks back I find this incredibly hypocritical. Accidents appear to only be accidents for certain players.

Waite had to tackle him with that motion because he was having to stop Lynch getting his leg to the ball to have a snap, it's a normal footballing tackle, ridiculous.

The Stevens decision is correct, the Waite decision is a joke

Why is it correct when the umpire paid Stevens a free kick and the GWS player played out the game?

It was only the Ch7 muppets throwing him under the bus by replaying the incident in slow motion and calling for him to be suspended that has done him in.

I bet if that tackle had happened in a Sunday twilight game on Foxtel it wouldn't have even been looked at it, the MRP gets swayed too easily by the media.

So this confirms they aren't serious about removing the sling tackle from the game. This and Walker on Hansen were both very similar to Waite, but because Atley and Hansen were able to brace their fall there is no sanction. Hence the action itself isn't what is being penalised.

Waite's tackle was more like Mumford's which was deemed reasonable than it was the ones that are deemed unreasonable. There is a lack of consistency with the MRP's rulings.

We all know that though.

The afl uses injury as a basis of punishment and not actions.

The MRP rules were written by lawyers not football people.

I don't think I've ever seen it so publicly stated though.

Since when do you agree with an umpires decision?

The umpire made a mistake. It was the exact description of what i would call a sling tackle

In the Syd v Bris game in a marking contest somebody copped a punch to the head. Surprised it didn't raise a mention (have forgotten who was involved but it wasn't Mills). Mills should have gone for that whack too or at worse copped a fine

Amazing that players like Fyfe can run past the ball and clean up players and get cleared. Whilst Waite gets two weeks for a good, strong tackle.

******* conspiracy.

North continue to get ****** by the MRP

Pretty sure ours cop it far worse when playing you mob.

The tackle didnt look bad. Just the outcome. So the new rule is, when someone is hurt someone always has to pay.

If they didn't punch people in the head so much they'd probably get looked after a bit more.

It probably helped that it was a Sunday Foxtel game which very few people watched, less media outrage so less chance of the MRP being swayed by it.
