Much Maligned Mayne Maintains Mettle

It was a big hit, but you could see Mayney set himself for Cripps and even when Cripps tried to steamroll him Mayne kept hold. Very Gutsy stuff.

So too was Stepho's effort to mark in the last quarter. He kept his eye on the ball and copped the contact for the team.

He gives it his all every single day. That's why he is held in such regard. He routinely kills our offensive forays, but anyone who questions his heart is a knob.

Get well Mayne. Hope it's not a serious injury, but his cheekbone looked all kinds of effed up

Brave act at a big moment - talk about taking one for the team. Wouldn't expect anything else from him as tries his heart out, and is why I have a soft spot for him despite his deficiencies.

His ability to salvage his career at the pies after that first season is a wonderful story, and should be a lesson to all players on what can be achieved purely through hard work and dedication to the task. Good stuff Mayney :thumbsu:

I like the way he earns his spot by working within his limitations. Every time he gets involved he either takes the tackle to get a stoppage, takes it over the line, dishes off a defensive hb. Frustrating sometimes that he doesn't do more but very few clangers.

This guy wears our jumper with pride. Yes he’s frustrating, but by god he gives everything he has for Collingwood. That bump he copped from Cripps was very heavy. You’ll never see Mayne shirk a contest, and that’s why he’s picked most weeks. He is right up there with Adams as our most courageous player.

no one can question his effort but his decision making and indecision is killing us. he kicks backwards more than just about anyone and rarely ever longer than 20m. add that to his hot potato handballing. if the list is fit his time has probably gone.

He’s an absolute lynch pin, I don’t get why everyone on here judges a players contribution by kicks and handballs. He is there at almost every contest all over the ground, very rarely beaten. He is going to be a huge loss, particularly without Sidebottom’s running capacity.

I don't think he's remotely close to a lynch pin, especially given that he's been dropped this season. We also completely turned the game around in his absence. He's a battler, but he butchers our movement forward, which we can't afford. Greenwood is a much better fit for this team than Mayne

Agree on Greenwood, but he too can butcher the ball. In any case you need two wingers....up and down all day. We don’t have too many that fit that bill in terms of willingness to contest the ball and plug holes where ever the team requires. To me that is the definition of a lynchpin.

I don't think you can have two wingers who can't do any damage going forward. That's why Daicos plays on one wing

From his first season with to now, complete respect for the man, gives it his all every week. Plays his role,
Is he one of the most talented, of coarse not, but he should before now getting a lot more credit for his game he plays than what he does from some on here.
