Two weeks for a perfect tackle? What a joke. I thought football was a contact sport.

I haven't seen a replay of the tackle yet. At the ground it looked hard but fair. As soon as I saw Ellard lying on the ground though I knew he would be in trouble.

Considering he was done for the same thing last year I knew he was gone.

Could there possibly be a worse way of trying to convert NRL people to our game than making fantastic takles outlawed?

Could there possibly be a worse way of trying to convert the anyone to our game than constantly changing rules and their interpretations? How are the new folks supposed to get a hold of the rules when long term fans of the game and even the players aren't sure whats good anymore.

If players are getting suspended for the resulting injuries of a tackle, heaven forbid that anyone ever tackles Shaun Higgins.

Edited for accuracy. :thumbsu:

I have lots of different opinions on this, so I’m feeling pretty conflicted right now. But here’s what I think:

- Great tackle by Mumford. Absolutely perfect technique.
- As much as you don’t want players suspended, I’d be coaching them to keep tackling in the best way possible (ie stop the player from a) getting away from you and b) off-loading).
- The rules have been pretty clearly set out for a while and precedent (although the MRP doesn’t use precedent of course) has been set, so his suspension isn’t a surprise.
- The AFL has a duty of care as it is a workplace as well as a contact sport. They have to do whatever they can to prevent head injuries. Multiple concussions is a VERY serious problem and more research will come out to support that. Scott Stevens just retired from AFL because of concussion and an ex-Demon has sued the AFL for lost income (and justifiably so in my eyes).

The thing that gets to me the most is the fact that if the player doesn't hurt his head it's a perfectly legitimate tackle. The exact same action becomes illegal if the player hurts himself. This was perfectly evident when it only became a free kick about 15 seconds after the tackle was laid. Am trying to think of an example in society where we come across a similar situation.

Its pretty common in society that the penalty given to an action is dependent on the severity of harm caused by that action.

What quarter and minute-mark did the 'notorious' tackle occur? I know where the Ryan O Keefe 'incident' occurred, but not the Mumford one.

Attempted murder? No harm can be caused and you can still be jailed for years...

Im shattered by this decision, for Mumford but also football in general..

seriously I havent heard one football person agree with it, coaches, players, commentators, fans people that matter, us.. absolutely no one... but the AFL have an agenda, footballs getting worse they are ruining the game.

Errr...Ellard definitely was concussed. He had two people dragging him off the ground, went straight to hospital and i believe stayed there overnight.

The MRP had no choice but to give Mummy a slap considering how hard they've been on sling tackling the last 2 years. And he has priors.

Say what you want about whether the rule is right, but it's quite clear Mummy's actions were outside the rules.

ROK is very stiff, free kick and nothing more.

I can assure you if that was a Carlton player who made the tackle you wouldn't have this point of view, the tackle was fair. Who gives a s**t if Ellard was concussed he got wrapped up by a big guy and tackled hard and thats how players are thought to tackle from a young age. Its a mans game for gods sake not netball. Im disgusted with the decision and unfortunately the AFL are setting a dangerous precedent for soft footy. Joel Coreys looked worse than Kosi's and Mummy's and he gets a reprimand purely based on a medical report, what a ridiculous way of deciding how many weeks someone gets.

For MRP and umpiring this has been without doubt the worst in the AFLs history, to many morons changing the rules for the sake of changing rules, AFL is this the only game I can think of where the rules are just changed willy nilly from year to year. Why fix something thats not broken? Disgrace!

Err except for the fact that he was sitting on the bench seemingly fine, was taken to hospital out of precaution not out of necessity, passed all the tests and tweeted 'All good, just a bit of a headache'.

I just hate when players are "unlucky" to get rubbed out, fair enough if they're reckless, or catch someone high, but if they're laying a standard tackle and the player just lands wrong that's not reason to suspend someone, especially for multiple weeks.

I feel bad for big guys like mummy n kosi, most of the time smaller opponents will be able to out maneuver them, its only right that if they get caught they cop a hard tackle, its the big guys best defence

And I continue to take less interest, and head towards local footy more and more. Good work Vlad and co, you've made the elite league, hit and miss and a spin the wheel contest where the prizes and questions change from week to week and year to year.

When holding the ball/incorrect disposal stopped being called, tackling them to the ground as forceful and as quick as possible became a priority.
