CARLTON midfielder has overcome his Brownlow Medal defeat, claiming the AFL Coaches Association's Champion Player of the Year award on Tuesday night.

Murphy, among the favourites for the Brownlow won by Magpie Dane Swan on Monday night, polled 94 votes to finish in front of teammate Chris Judd (90).

Hawk Sam Mitchell and Western Bulldogs captain Matthew Boyd (87 each) tied for third with Sun Gary Ablett and Swan (both 80) rounding out the top five.

WOO Go Murph... the real player of the year!!!

Re: Murph wins ALFCA award, Judd second

Great recognition for a brilliant season from Murphy. :thumbsu:

For mine the award doesn't receive the prestige it deserves. Far ahead of the MVP and at least equal with the Brownlow in terms of credibility, for mine.

Coaches award should be miles ahead of umpires award

Re: Murph wins ALFCA award, Judd second

Excellent work by Murph. Shows what happens when you have a pre-season and can train.

Definitely. Should have exploded onto the scene last year, but because of his lack of a pre-season last year, he under-performed.

This year with a full pre-season, he has been in devastating form and will, when working in combination with Judd, be one of the players that the opposition is trying to negate.

I am fully confident after the second half to Gibbs season, that we will see him have a similar style season as Smurph just had.

It has been an excellent year by Murphy and I full expect him to be above Judd in the Brownlow count next year and pushing him for the AFLPA MVP award next year.

Re: Murph wins ALFCA award, Judd second

Fantastic recognition for Murph and arguably a more rounded award than any of the others given the coaches special insight into what the opposition are doing to them on the field. Well done Murph, you little champion!

Better to be recognized by the coaches than loved by the maggots.

Well done Murph, and Juddy. Obviously the best 2 players in the comp. :thumbsu:

Re: Murph wins ALFCA award, Judd second

It's interesting how incredibly "politicised" awards like the Brownlow, and the "Media AA Selection", and the "Media MOY/GOY" have become. The MOY was a truly nutty decision, and it was clear the umps felt the pressure to vote for certain Collingwood players this year because of what happened last year. It's become a joke.

The only awards I take notice of are those voted by the players and coaches, because they are the ones in the know, because they play against these players, and prepare to negate them each week.

Well done Murph. He probably would have polled 40 votes in the Brownlow this year if he played for Eddie's horrible mob.

:)

Spot on, the Brownlow has lost some of its importance now because the clowns that umpire our game seem to be corrupt or have no idea. How did Boyd from the WB not get votes when he got about 50 possessions or how did Jordan Lewis not get any votes in the game against us?

I reckon you need to have it the other way around, at least equal with MVP and far ahead of the brownlow. I'd rather receive recognition from players and coaches than the umpires.

Well done to Murph he deserved recognition for his great season and if coaches think he's one of the most damaging players then that's a great achievement :thumbsu:

Disagree about the MVP. In the past it's been obvious that players vote to help out their own teammates. A lot of groupthink in the award - I'm naturally weary of awards that are submitted at the end of the season, because the footy world in general has the memory of a goldfish.

I wrote an article on the Brownlow tonight basically saying that I rate the AFLPA MVP Award higher than the Brownlow.

Judd won by about 900 votes, I doubt that his teammates help would've helped him that much. Also, the players share a respect for eachother, if they think somebody's the top player for the year they'll most likely vote for him.

Re: Murph wins ALFCA award, Judd second

For a long time I have thought the MVP and AFLCA awards have been oh so underated, I would much rather my peers and seniors(coachs) say Im the best player in the competetion than a bloody umpire, I'll give swanny credit he deffinatley deserved to win as much as I hate him and see him as weak for been an outside player... theres not many better outside players, we'll just call it even Swan was paying $1.08 last year and Juddy robbed him (deservingly) this year everyone thought Judd was a no brainer and Swan robbed the messiah.. fairly.
Either way Im stoked in our improvment, we've got this years MVP and AFLCA award winners in our midfield and finished 5th when alot of people expected us to choke, top 4 is a must next year.. I dont know about all of you but I can feel #17 comming.
Also kudos to the boys good to see the votes for the blues this year was spread really nicely between the boys Judd, Murph, Gibbs, Scotland, Simmo, Betts, Walker, Robinson and Kreuzer all polled a few, even a vote counts these days, not many duds get votes, loving the depth atm. Our only weakness is maybe lacking one more strong bodied defender though Jamison and Henderson both make great backman, Jamison would have been AA this year and Henderson has showed more than enough that he is truely a geniune defender and we also apparently need a power forward, for those with any footy brains... we've got some bloody good players comming through, Luke Mitchell I geniunly think once his body is right he will be a star, atleast a consistent multiple goal kicker, Levi Casboult has shown alot over the years and looks almost ready just needs to perfect his awkward kicking action, Matthew Watson will make a great big bodied defender with another one or two pre seasons to get that engine into him, Mr. Ed Curnow in my mind will no doubt return strong next seasons after a poor finish with the shoulder deffinatley affected his confidence, Jarryd Cachia looks like a good hard at it midfielder that we seem to have trouble develping correctly... or trading for... lol
Im hopeful but not 100% with Rhys O'Keefe looks a class above in the twos just the question is can he get the momentum up enough to convert it to the big leagues?
and last but deffinatley not least Kane Lucas, I love this bloke some people have written him off already but hes a ball magnent, his disposal isnt what it could be.. YET.. this will be another Yarran, good year of develpment into him and a couple of pre seasons and he will thrive, has just a touch of flair about him.
We dont need to hit trade week to hard this year, Just get rid of some disposables to try strengthen some weakness's or add abit of depth, but I for one would rather groom our own players rather then poach them, getting certain players that would fit into our team beautifully next year may halt the development of our young stars, I know the wait deffinatley blows but in the last decade we've copped it on the chin constantly... this year we got our credibility as a dominate team back and Im more interested in the long term of our club, completly been un-biased but the Im confident of a flag in the next two years IF we can start getting some points against the maggotpies, geelong we already proven we are not far behind (not to mention probably half there age)
even if collingwood beats us to #17 which I pray wont happen, if all goes well I wont be botherd because we will have #18 by 2018 and rightfully take our spot back on the throne of the AFL.
