How does everyone feel about a convicted criminal playing for us?

Would we draft a kid who had been convicted of a similar offence as a juvenile?
Absolutely fine with Murray Newman playing for us.
Yes he's been convicted of GBH, it was a flurry of punches thrown in 10 seconds.
If he had failed to connect of they were just glancing blows, I wonder if we would even know about it?
When Embley and Chick had some serious dust ups, it could be argued that they were premeditated. No one was charged. They were definitely involved in violent acts, fully intending to cause bodily harm - no police, no probs?
I mean honestly how many other Eagles have been involved in off field dust ups that we don't here about on here, I personally know of some instances, how about you?

Oh well, that's all right then.
If he had done more than break his jaw, the same logic applies, no?

Well we drafted Llane Spanderman who was facing charges, his crime was aggravated burglary though so it wasn't as bad as Newman.

I was disgusted that he was out there. People need to write into the club and make their opinions heard on this topic.

Really? you were disgusted?

I'm fine with it, go Murray go

Pretty sure that if someone broke your jaw you wouldn't want them playing national AFL and getting cheered on by the nation as if nothing had happened.

The circumstances around the incident still seem a bit cloudy to me (I'm not clear on whether Murray was really provoked to get physical or not) but I think it's certainly not something you can just laugh off. Especially since he was found guilty.

I personally don't mind that he's playing practice matches (those aren't that much more important than intraclub games IMO) but I hope West Coast don't play him in the H&A season until his sentencing is clear. The sentence should give some additional clarity around how serious the court considered the crime to be (as other posters have mentioned, GBH is always severe but there are still different levels of severity).

If he's imprisoned for more than a few months I hope we delist him. If he comes out of prison a changed man we can re-rookie him at that point but I don't think the club should be giving up a main list spot for someone who has lost the ability to play H&A games through events that were under their control.

He's being sentenced in a couple of weeks so that shouldn't be an issue.

What if their opinion is they're in favour of the club standing by Newman?

Is that true? Shit. Agg burg isn't to be taken lightly, depending on the facts some would consider it just as bad as a fight at a club. Was he found guilty in the end?

Embley and Chick were consenting adults (who would have undertaken boxing as part of their training) who had intended to have their most serious dust up under the supervision of the club. They were not impaired (well Chick might have been...) and from what I have read it was supposed to be a "fair fight".

Hes on the rookie list anyway, so if we delist him its not going to free up a spot for anything this year.
I don't know what they will do though im not aware of any other cases where a club has had someone imprisoned still on their list...

Yes, found guilty. From memory some of his mates decided to go rough up an acquaintance of theirs for some supposed indiscretion, and they took the 6'6" Spaanderman along to intimidate the bloke.

Pretty bloody ordinary that is. Shows a real lack of judgment, stuff like that can get (more) out of hand pretty easily.

Supposed it's a while ago though, hope he learnt from the experience at least.

Yeah, if a guy throws a punch or two, he should -never- be allowed to work in his chosen profession ever again. I mean, if someone broke your jaw, you wouldn't want to see him working as an accountant or an engineer, would you?!

Huge difference between working a regular job and being lauded as a role model on national television (because for right or wrong, lots of kids do look up to AFL players as role models).

I also didn't say "never again". My feeling is that since he has a sentence hanging over his head, before he plays an H&A game we should find out what the sentence is, and if he needs to serve time he'll have to do that before he can move past this.

I mean has he even apologized to the guy? I doubt it. Sure, his pride is injured, but that's his problem, not other people's.

A profession is a profession. If he is given a sentence, he will serve it, that's all the punishment he needs.

May struggle to be an accountant with a conviction. Would struggle to be a lawyer (yes instances but that's semantics). The Bar doesn't exactly welcome "criminals" with open arms.

Not disagreeing with your point, but there are instances where a conviction, particularly for a violent crime, can really screw things up.

So many boxers with a one fight record in your world.

Poor choice of professions used in the example perhaps, but the point remains. Anyway, an accountant with a violent streak may make him employable!

Its more the fact that it seemed to have a fair amount of pre-meditation about it that is more the issue. If he was jumped on unexpectedly in a club and defended himself, the whole case would have a different air about it.
