It's GBH, not common assault or AOBH TFS; a suspended sentence is an absolute exception to the rule... I said that many times earlier in the thread.

Blokes get smacked in the chin every weekend in northbridge - i doubt many get a 12 month sentence.

I've little sympathy for Newman - smack a bloke for no good reason - go to gaol. Pretty simple and understandable.

I just wish they'd deal it out more often

Wow - 12 month sentence seems harsh.

I'm not against a term of incarceration - but I would have thought 45 days would be sufficient

Either way - it sounds from the defence evidence that is career over.

Doesn't set a good precident though. Other lawyers would use the 45 days as an example in their cases to question their clients sentencing.

I am in total shock that he was given a jail sentence.

I'm surprised but not shocked

His apparent lack of remorse in the eyes of the judge I think would have weighed heavily against him

Should have taken his hands out of his pockets

As I've stated - it only seems harsh when you consider what other blokes get for similar incidents.

I've no issue with it - why smack a bloke and crack his jaw for no reason.

I just hope it happens more often - to get rid of this culture that is emminating nowadays where it is fun to go out and get into fights.

WHen I was 18 - it was all about chasing skirt - that seems to be secondary in a night out, certainly when I overhear conversations within the footy club i play for

Depends on the charge mate. There is rhyme and reason to the level of punishment metered out.. sometimes inadequate though.

I understand the charge element - but the law is not consistant.

It only takes one lenient or lazy copper, or a lenient judge and a GBH is downgraded.

One thing I will say though - is the Eagles will no doubt sack him.

However the law is pretty clear - once he is out he is a free man. I don't understand why he would be precluded from working after that.

Hard to be consistent when each case has a different judge/justice/magistrate and a different set of facts/aggravating factors - it's like saying every shot on goal must be the same, lots of variables. DPP won't chase a GBH unless they have sufficient evidence or a strong argument that might result in a conviction, else they would charge with AOBH; I could tell from the facts that emerged a) he will be found guilty and b) there is a strong probability of prison time. That's consistent enough for me.

I'm not sure they will. It's not a long sentence. Yes, he has paid his dues once released. Any club (assuming he is released by WCE) may elect to wait until his parole period is served if released early.

Copped his right whack. Hopefully he can still make a fist of it when he gets out.

Hasn't exactly been punching above his weight so far.
Glass' jaw dropped when the sentence was handed down.

Not so sure about that

In many ways it would be hypocritical of the club to sack him now because
a) they knew of the charges when they decided to rookie list him
b) they retained him on their list after he was found guilty. Even played him in our NAB challenge games
c) they would have (or should have) been well aware that a jail term was a possible, if not probable, outcome

If he behaves he's out on parole in 6 months and can come back to the club to see if he's serious about putting his life back in order and whether football is a part of that process

Shame he didnt get it suspended. He is perhaps abit unlucky, people get punched every weekend and no charges are laid or its only charged as assault. I am not condoning his actions and he deserved what he got but given it was his first offence and his efforts to correct himself, it is a shame that it was not suspended.

I hate the number of fights that occur when out and about, if this hard line approach is maintained for normal joe's then i am all for it.

Was a premeditated, serious assault on someone.

I don't care if it's my favourite player of all time - you've gotta go down for that.

Too many AFL-listed players have a god complex and think they'll get away with whatever they want (our club has had a few of those in the past). This isn't about being a role model (f***ing hate that term), this is about being a decent man.

Got 12 months - oops didn't see previous page.

That's the law aye?

Well hope he learns his lesson.

Well it's not just the likely six months that is his punishment it's also the future loss of his desired occupation. Of course that's just part of it. If I was convicted with a crime I wouldn't be able to get another job in my occupation.

Well, thems the breaks sometimes. Don't see how he could be offered another contract at the end of the year - thats if he even gets out in time. Probably ended his career.

oh well, you cant go around belting blokes, especially ones you've already threatened. kind of glad a high profile example has been made, even if it does come at the expense of the eagles.

In some ways, we might as well see what mind set he is in after his 6 month stint. Delisting him now gives us no benefit. If he isnt granted parole or he doesnt look like correcting himself, we can just delist him at the normal time in November. We have gone past the point of condoning his actions, if we didnt condone his actions, we should have delisted him the moment he was found guilty, or even back when the event occurred.

I don't think they should sack him personally - but the AFL will be levying pressure and the media will get their knickers in a twist.

If he hasn't shown a meaningful change in attitude - then sure - give him the boot. BUt is he has turned his life around - then stick by him.

He'll be a free man by September most likely - put in a big pre-season and be ready fo 2015

I hope the club continues to support him and keeps him on the list. Sad to see a young man go to prison, he did the wrong thing I know, but I'm sure he is a scared young man now.

cutting out violent crime is a higher priority that footy.

another high draft pick wasted, hopefully not another life

Yep - but I think it's still better having a criminal who is contributing to society in a positive form than one who isn't.

I think jail is punishment enough. Isn't the idea of jail to keep the public safe, but also rehabilitate.

You do the time, then he should be given the opportunity to show he's better and be given the same job opportunities as anyone else.

Wonder if Marley Williams will get the same treatment.

I wonder after 6 months if the Eagles will still keep him on their list?

Sorry to intrude, but I think the main differences between Marley/Murray is no one has suggested Marley's incident was premeditated and he seems to of shown remorse / done community service since then which I hope means he gets a fair bit less than 12 months
