Not entirely happy with that.

As was apparent from the first day of the trial and was restated by the judge in the earlier article, there was a prolonged pattern of threat and demand for a fight which Newman finally acted on. The clubs comment that it was "10 seconds" etc misses that point.

A point the judge has made numerous times ...

Sentence seems reasonable to me and, again from attending Day 1 of the trial, almost inevitable ...

You attended the trial?

Can I just add that on a purely human basis, my heart goes out to Murray. Prison is awful and for a young guy with the world at his feet it's gotta hurt twice as much ...

I really hope he hangs tough and comes through this and realises his potential

Disappointed. He's now paying for his actions. Hope he can sort himself and get his life on track. Interesting to see what the club does with him in the future...

Yes, some posts after Day 1. I hadn't realised the depth of his problem in the matter until I went. It didn't bode well for Muzza ...

Ah, I remember you posting pretty regularly during the trial but I hadn't realised you had actually been there. In a weird way I'm a little jealous, I would have really liked to sit in on it.

Well summed up (the 10 seconds quote was sloppy on the club's part), but overall the response is about right.

I actually think there's a stronger case for keeping him on the list with him having gone to jail than if he had got a suspended sentence. He's paid his debt after the clink and will deserve another shot (see Krak).

Interesting that he's been retained. Obviously they believe their broader social responsibilities aren't impeded by his retention and they obviously rate him.

Six months to a year fits the crime he's been convicted of well enough.

Though I'd have been interested in seeing witness accounts of the nights evens. As the prosecutions case for intent was always based on flimsy Internet chest beating.

I would like to see the club come out an say something along the lines of... "firstly, we condemn any violence and actions that may cause harm to others. However, we made a commitment to support our teammate through this process and we will be fulfilling that commitment."

Disclaimer: I am NOT Nisbett

“The club does not condone Murray’s actions, or similar violent acts, but will continue to support him,” Mr Nisbett said. - See more at: http://m.westcoasteagles.com.au/news/2014-03-07/murrary-newman#sthash.c3lh5hu6.dpuf

So does this mean I should probably change my Dream Team/Fantasy/SuperCoach team names from The Swinging Newmans to something else? (Bearing in mind last year I had Bouncing Sharrods)

Not massively shocked by this as he needed to cop a fair whack for it. Breaking someone's jaw in an attack like that is a rather serious act.

problem I have with delisting him is that I know the moment we do that from next year, some desprete club will pounce thinking his a changed man and they know his talented and worth a punt for nothing and he'll become a good player for them like we all know he should be for us. You look at krakouer for Collingwood- didn't stop no one from drafting him, plenty of clubs were looking at him even Dayle Garlett is playing AFL after looking like trouble.
AFL clubs don't care- talent is talent, Murry will get picked up if we delist him- guarantee.

My opinion is I don't think we should delist him and we should just wait it out for 6 months, stick by him and hopefully hell pay us back and become a good player.

Agree. If we delist him and he continues on his changed ways, he will just end up going to a side like the Pies or Tigers who will be seen to be the ones who 'turned him around' and we look like the idiots who put him off track and then lost a star for nothing.

We already are for persevering for so long with him, he should've been gassed a long time ago.

Was to be expected, frankly it could have been a lot worse.

Murray has been given an opportunity very few people are afforded entering prison.

His job may very well be waiting for him when he is released.

For the club to show this kind of support is impressive and i hope Murray is eternally grateful for it, pays for his crime and redeems himself into a respectable member of society. (awesome footballer would be nice as well)

Good luck Muzza.

I think this is for the best, it all depends on how Newman decides to come back from this that will define his character. He made a mistake and has received his punishment, if it sends a message to others and stops idiots from hitting others then all the better.

So I guess he will be paroled in 6 months (so long as he keeps his nose clean) which will mean he will be on track for the 2015 season if he is good enough.
