Or maybe the fact that it makes them more aerodynamic so they can run with more speed...
Get 700 odd random guys off the street between 18 and 34ish years of age, and I reckon the shaved head ratio would be pretty much the same.

Why do guys like Ablett and Chapman shave their heads? My answer is probably because they have receding hairlines.
Watch or look at photos from older games (70's and 80's). Flowing comb-overs and barely covered scalps, sporting the odd whispy hair.
You just don't see that in this day and age (but you do see a lot more shaved heads).
