My manager and I were talking about something like this last week. It would make taxation a lot easier, but some people could have privacy concerns. You purchase a good or service, it uploads to your online profile.

I've thought of the idea for years. But you know, if you want to buy something in privacy like that, just don't scan your receipts card and get a normal receipt.

Would that make it much harder to be dodgy?

So for a bloke like me who uses public transport rarely, is it better to just keep buying these one off trip cards?

Same thing happended again this morning.

Scanned on fine, with a charge of about $4.90 from what should have been a 2-hour charge yesterday, but again didn't work when I tried to scan off.

Called up, was on and off hold for 26mins. First the guy told me my card had no balance so I couldn't be using it. Then he said my card wasn't registered (WTF he meant I have no idea), then he couldn't view my travel history, and finally told me to call back early next week. I asked him why he can't just put a note in the system saying I was overcharged yesterday and am sure to be today as well but he honestly had no idea what he was doing.

What a debacle!!

That is absolutely appalling. If the system wasn't ready to go live they should have just sucked up the criticism and kept working, sending it live in THIS state is just ridiculous.

I just tried registering my Myki on the website again, and it finally worked. Took long enough. Now I can see my balance and top up online. I've had no problems with using the card itself so far. Don't see what everyone (Well, the Herald Sun) is bitching about.

so because you have had no problems you think that the system is working absolutely fine for absolutely everyone else in Victoria? you just implied that the website did not work properly.

it took me three goes for the website registration to work properly. i do not hold my breath for actually using the card.

I said I've had no problems with the card itself. I mean in terms of swiping on and off, and topping up at the vending machines at stations. I've heard people whinging about it not working when they try to swipe it, it taking ages etc. Mine's been fine in that sense.

WTF dude? Yes you said that, but you also said "Don't see what everyone (Well, the Herald Sun) is bitching about." but then you you also just said "I've heard people whinging about it not working when they try to swipe it, it taking ages etc."

So what do you think people are bitching about? :confused:

You can save the $10 fee if you apply for one online before the 17th.

That's what I thought. then I found out you need a new one every time your concession status changes and as I'm going to be on austudy need to reapply again and pay the fee

So you can just use short term tickets and it's business as usual basically? You can't buy multi trip tickets this way but I don't use the train enough to have ever bothered doing this pre myki anyway.

Usually I would agree with you, as usually the HUN along with ACA and TT beat all this sort of thing up. However Myki is a mess. There are very respected forms and sections of the media saying exactly the same as the Herald Sun.

Short term fares are more expensive than the equivalent using Myki Money. Note that you can only get a two-hour or daily short term ticket, there are no weekly or monthly tickets. You need a Myki card for that.

Weekly full-fare Zone 1
using Myki: $29.40
using 5 short term tickets: $34.00

Daily full-fare Zone 1
using Myki: $5.88
using short term ticket: $6.80

Two-hour full-fare Zone 1
using Myki: $2.94
using short term ticket: $3.70

My own experience so far is that I tried to register online and I got an error the first two times. It finally worked the third time. Now I find out that perhaps those fails actually worked and I might be receiving 2 or 3 cards. Only got 1 so far. Of course I go to register that card and get the typical "This function is currently unavailable please try again shortly." I call 13 Myki and they're clueless, suggest I swipe on at a train station to activate the card. So I go and do that, I even deposit $2 on the card, that worked fine. Go back to the Myki site and still get the error.

Myki may work fine for all I know, but the website is balls. Internet Explorer* keeps complaining about scripting errors, and why is it so hard to register online and have it work the first time? So I now have a card with $2 Myki Money on it, but it may or may not be registered to my online account. I can't add it to my card because the Myki site says the card is already registered.

I will have to wait to see if I get another 1 or 2 cards in the mail. They're supposed to arrive within 7 days, the first one took 10 days, so if I get another card, that will be at least 12 days.

* I almost never use IE, I just read somewhere that if you had troubles with other browsers, try IE. Unfortunately the error I mentioned with my card has nothing to do with the browser you choose.

You'd think that with a warchest of a billion dollars, improving rail infrastructure would be at the top of the list.

Instead Victoria gets an arsey ticketing system that isn't needed, while keeping the same network that buckles under any sort of pressure.

Absolutely moronic.

what this bloke said:thumbsu:

Have there been any studies on the amount of infrastructure that could have been improved/built with the money that was spent on Myki?

Called 13 Myki about my card not being registered to my online account, that is, you see the error "This function is currently unavailable please try again shortly." He said it's a known issue and that other more pressing problems are being fixed right now but that it was on the list of things to fix.

That at least gave me some comfort in that there is nothing I need to do to fix the problem. I'll check my account in a week or so and see if my card has been registered by then.

EDIT: just saw that Victorian Transport Minister Lynne Kosky has resigned

I only use the train to go to the footy and cricket, plus I get student concession as well, so it's not worth it for a dozen or so train trips a year.
