only major omissions apart from the obvious injuries are;

jones, tapscott and gysberts ... although i think that all have something to do with the 'conservative' approach (baileys words) that we are taking this pre season

notable absence in matty warnock as well

i think it's a good squad, and we are obviously going to see a lot of our younger boys over the night

i can't wait!

" At this stage, Melbourne has 37 players available to choose from for next week’s NAB Cup opener against Adelaide and Port Adelaide.:

Yeah right ...

Many of the omissions aren't seriously injured, and rather, are just having their workloads managed after minor setbacks or injuries from last year.

Good to see Blease and Strauss included in the squad, will be interesting to see how they go.

Assuming Scully is injured, I'd line them up as follows:

FB: Clint Bartram Jared Rivers Joel MacDonald
HB: Jack Grimes Colin Garland James Strauss
C: Aaron Davey Brent Moloney Rohan Bail
HF: Jamie Bennell Jack Watts Addam Maric
FF: Liam Jurrah Brad Green Lynden Dunn
Fol.: Mark Jamar, Colin Sylvia, Jack Trengove

Int.: Matthew Bate, Neville Jetta, Michael Evans, Daniel Nicholson, Sam Blease, Jake Spencer

Sub: Stefan Martin

Others: Lucas Cook, Tom McNamara, Jeremy Howe, Tom McDonald, Cameron Johnston.

Looks a little short down back, so would play Martin as a sub. I wouldn't mind giving Cook a go down back on Butcher against the Power. I'd imagine Howe will get a go playing deep out of the goal square.

i have to agree with that andy mac, but i think ther are some merits to playing cook on the bench instead of bate or as the sub, just so he can get a taste of afl level...

if not cook, howe in for bate

but that's just me, i haven't been bate's biggest fan this last year

Agreed.

I'm not sure what the go with Bater is. I was saddened to see his concrete hands hadn't improved in the practice match.

Expecting big things from Howe, looks ready-made imo. Lookin' 4ward to seeing him "hopefully", tearing it up on Friday Night :)

BTW: Is his name properly pronounced as "Howie" or "How"?

Name is pronounced 'How', but nickname is 'Howie' (I believe).

Wish i had foxtel right now, dying to see some of the younguns in action. Oh well.

Thanks for that. I got confused because on youtube when you watch his videos, the crowd say "Howie", but when Bailey talks about him he pronounces it as "How". Wasn't sure which was correct. Either way; I'll just call him Howie, nicknames work better... and it sounds better imo :thumbsu:
