NAB Cup

As with every NAB cup i dont care who we win or or lose against.
The result means SFA to me its all about how they play an giving youngsters a chance to push for selection an put pressure on others for places..

Last season i could tell after 2 preseason games we were in trouble.
Then we went on to be 4 an 1 in real season but i still saw massive problems, while the majority kept saying stuff like we are 4 an 1 doesnt matter how.

Due to the change of coach we will be a bit of an un-known quantity in the real season. There may be advantages to exiting the NAB first up.

There's a new system now where all the teams play all 3 rounds, with the granny between the 2 best records.

We've got Richmond in R2 and Port in R3. Pretty soft draw really, though they might be out to prove a preseason point.

Absolutely, I play to win in division 3 indoor cricket, and I certainly wouldn't expect any less of professional footballers at the highest level. But that's not the point. The players stick to their structures that the coaching staff believe will give them success in the regular season. You also don't play underdone players, or those that wouldn't benefit from a run, eg someone like Sandi or Pav in the game against Port at Bum**** Idaho Oval. If that costs us a win in the pre-season, then so be it. Ideally it's going to result in winning all games.
What happens if you make the NAB cup final do you care whether you win or lose then? Believe it or not some teams who win the nab cup actually perform well during the regular season.

Some don't as well. You should know that as a Carlton fan. ;)

But I didn't say I don't care whether we win or lose. I'd much rather we win. But I wouldn't want the coaching staff to sacrifice the longer term good of the club in an all out pursuit of victory.

Having already won a preseason comp as coach, I presume Lyon will know how to temper celebrations when the real thing rolls along.

Personally I hope we don't win the preseason comp. Only 1 team has won it and gone on to win the flag. Look at Collingwood last yr blitzed the preseason comp, blitzed the regular season then all their players started falling apart finals time cos their season had gone on too long.

I hope we get our players up and running and work on our structure/ gameplan and hopefully win a couple of games just to some confidence up going into the regular season.

You'd think most players would be hell bent on beating their opponent though regardless. Especially the younger fellas.

Esti, cheers for the NAB Cup info. My assumption is that Richmond and Port might be going as hard at the NAB as any team going around.

You dont drop out of the NAB Cup with a loss this year. The first 4 games are played(obviously the first 2 in one day) then the two top teams play off in the NAB GF.

So you should still be televised for at least the first 3 weeks.

Fair call...Interesting to see the different opinions towards the Nab cup. Bring on the 2012 season maybe a carlton v fremantle GF. Actually hope that never happens I'll be torn between family and a team I've been following for 20 odd years.

Want to fill us in on who your nephew is?

Personally I hope we just improve over the course of the cup. Would take losing every game over an injury to even one top 22 player.

NAB Cup = Scratch Matches.

I just checked the telecast schedule for the NAB cup:

Round Robin (Rnd 1)
West Coast Eagles vs. Fremantle vs. Essendon
Patersons Stadium, 4.45pm WST FOXTEL

Round 2
Fremantle vs. Richmond
Patersons Stadium, 5.10pm WST FOXTEL

Round 3
Port Adelaide vs. Fremantle
Victor Harbor (SA), 3.40pm (SA Local time) No telecast

Round 4
Either we are in the Final or playing another team (most likely Eagles at home)

I'm going to miss out on the Port Vs Freo game as Im going to be at my sisters wedding, but I would rather that then have to listen to the call on radio if those bias pricks from 5AA call it. I don't want my ears to bleed like that again after hearing that Dangerfield was a shoe-in for the Brownlow...:thumbsd:

I think the NAB Cup is a pain in the ass of a pre-season but talk of being happy with losing is unacceptable

I would love a pre-season with no injuries but I'd also love a successful pre-season that gives me hope for the upcoming season

As far as I'm concerned, yes it's going to take time for the structures to be understood and there could be some early pain but there are NO EXCUSES whatsoever

Ross Lyon has to understand that the expectations on Freo have been ramped up and that applies to the pre-season too

Anyone who goes into a preseason comp with serious expectations is just setting themselves up for unnecessary disappointment. They're just practice matches.

Yes that's true but if you change the coach for a "better" model, well you'd be looking to hit the ground running, or so I thought.

I want Freo going all out to win the NAB Cup while rotating the squad throughout. That's all I want to see, 100% effort.

Performance in the NAB Cup can set the tone for the season though. In both 2006 and 2010 we were up and running in the NAB. Most other years we've looked pretty flat preseason with nothing much changing as the year's gone on.

I seem to have heard this somewhere before...

Expect a GeorgeGrljusich themed thread from afl08

Not a chance in hell of that. I'm not the sort to meltdown over NAB Cup games, only when we don't put in the effort required, would I meltdown

If we don't win the NAB Cup, as long as we've put in 100% effort in every match, I'll be satisfied as I want to see something to give me hope for the season

Of course I want to see a pre-season game but no Melbourne trip for us it seems
