We may want to give as little away as possible.

No offense to the Tigers, but Collingwood are far more of a threat to us and our push up the ladder than the Tigers. Not saying we're premiership contenders but we'd be more confident of beating the Tigers with a plan B, C & D than Collingwood.

My point exactly. You play us Rd 1 and the Pies Rd 3, by which time the season will be warming up and pre season plans may well be changing/evolving. I'd also guess there is more advantage to be gained for the underdog team seeing the potential match ups and game plans in action, as they can plan adjustments accordingly. Not that this would necessarily make a big difference, but it could be the tipping point in a close game.

All in all then strategically I'd be putting the 'inexperienced' side out against the Tigers, and saving the seniors for the Pies.

I suggest most teams will just treat the NAB Cup as a chance to just get another game into the players, and won't be too worried about the result. Get through unscathed, try some younger players, and the result will take care of itself.

Your guess is as good as ours.

It's more than likely that there will be plenty of changes - we'll use as many players as we possibly can in order to ensure that we limit the possibility of injuries.

Of course, between injuries and resting players we won't be able to completely change our line up from one game to the next so there will be some overlap.

There are 2 ways we could approach this -
1) Have a mixture of experience and untried youth in both games
2) Field a stronger team in one game and a weaker one in the other.

The first option is far more likely IMO, but the 2nd is a possibility. If we go for the 2nd option, expect the kids to be played against Collingwood and a more experienced team to play Richmond.

Well summed up J, I don't think we'll see many players playing in both games, too big a injury risk.

I'd like us to do option 2, but I think they will go the 1st option.

I believe the teams which play game 1 & 3 are not likely to progress past round 1.

Would've been fairer if AFL said teams which play back to back can only use 5or less players in both games.

This way all clubs are basically playing full list on the day.

I would go the opposite. You would expect the senior players would go hard enough against the young Tigers but know when to back it off and not overdo anything and risk injury, whilst still getting a good hit out.

I would like to see the kids played against the Pies as you would not want them thinking senior footy was too easy and they had done enough work when they gave the Tigers a touch up.;)

Can you explain why you think this? It's up to you to decide who you do and don't play in the 3rd match, so aside from cotton-balling players who may be susceptible to soft tissue injuries I'd have thought the rule actually advantaged you (in terms of flexibility for playing your list). Like you though, I'd have loved to see our whole list get a run, but we're only allowed to introduce the 3 emergencies in the second game.

Very funny.:p

I doubt it's a misprint Aph!

That would be pretty conservative considering the big fella did his knee in ~R12.

April would be R6 at the latest.

Because this is a new thing where players will be having a 1 hr break between games, very risky to introduce players to this kind of schedule which they are not use to.

I can see clubs being very conservative backing up players in Game 1 & 3.

We'll see soon enough.

I thought he was much closer BTP & totally forgot it was Rnd 12 last year.

Definitely no need to rush him back too early.

Anyone know the AFL rules on when we have to name our team/squad for the 1st game?

Then also I guess we have to lodge a team list between finishing 1st game & before starting 3rd game??????

Quite a forgettable match, Aphro!

I predict we'll practically play the Ants side against the tigers, seniors will come out against the Pies. Ants to win by at least 5 goals.
I think this is a good idea, try and play a completely different starting 18 across both matches, the first team to face the Tigers being our least experienced or least likely to be selected, the second being a more H&A-like side.

To Play Tigers (18);

KPDs - Thornton, McInnes, McCarthy
Smalls - Tuohy, Twomey, O'Keeffe, Laidler

Rucks - O'hAilpin
Mids - Scotland, Carrazzo, Cachia, Curnow, Kerr

KPFs - Bray, Casboult, Labi
Smalls - Collins, Houlihan

To Play Pies (24);

KPDs - Jamison, Bower, Austin, Watson
Smalls - Yarran, Russell, Armfield, Joseph, Duigan, Davies

Rucks - Warnock, Hampson
Mids - Murphy, Gibbs, Simpson, Robinson, McLean, Ellard

KPFs - Walker, Waite, White
Smalls - Betts, Garlett, Lucas

According to the injury list, Kreuzer won't be available until April

I am hoping it is a missprint.

NAB Cup injury list: round one

Carlton

Lachie Henderson (hip) - 4 weeks
Matthew Kreuzer (knee) - 8 weeks
Luke Mitchell (shoulder) - 6 weeks

NAB Cup injury list: round one
Just looking at that page and for a club that's pre-season is in tatters there is only five clubs with smaller injury lists :o

Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney and Port have a few worries so early on.

Blues to take two, warm teams into cup matches

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-ne...rm-teams-into-cup-matches-20110209-1an1h.html

CARLTON will keep its players warm and moving but will also field different teams for its two matches on Saturday night in the NAB Cup round robin.

While Collingwood and Richmond will draw players from a pool of 29 for their back-to-back matches, the Blues, as one of the teams in this unusual round that play the first then third matches with an hour's break in the middle, will be allowed more significant changes.

That article mentions that the following players will not feature on Saturday night:

Kreuzer
Henderson
Carrazzo
Collins
Garlett
Judd
Mitchell

In that case I'd expect every other Carlton listed player (senior and rookie) to be named to play on Saturday night.

Squads should be named today.

I know it's only NAB Cup so we can't look into it too much as there is little to no correllation between NAB Cup form and regular season form (especially this season), but I'm excited.

Footy is back and we'll get to see plenty of the new boys in action on Saturday night.

Not sure what the story is with McCarthy, but he has pretty much been in the rehab group every time I've been to trainign and didn't participate in the intra clubs, wouldn't have thought he would play either.

Looking forward to Curnow, Duigan and Watson especially. If those guys can fire for us we will be in very good shape.

Carlton Names NAB squad

Named are first-year draftees Nick Duigan, Andrew McInnes and Matthew Watson, the pre-draft trade player Jeremy Laidler, and the rookies Jaryd Cachia, Levi Casboult, Ed Curnow, Zach Tuohy and Wayde Twomey.
:thumbsu:

I'm actually looking forward to seeing if Kerr can show us some tricks.

Huge misconception I reckon.

I agree entirely that as a team this is true, because you cannot gauge how 'seriously' your opponents are taking the game and each contest therein.

But, as Joseph, Garlett, Jacobs and Armfield showed over the past couple of seasons, a solid (if unspectacular) couple of NAB games can really, really start a players career, and can turn them into genuine contributors of a finals side.
