Re: Nathan Ablett -> CHB?

We don't need a like-for-like replacement, we just need a little extra effort from the six guys in the back line. This is a challenge, and I reckon our boys will react well to it. Bring Max back, give Mackie a role, get Dash to play across half back, blocking up space, tell Otto and Blake to fill holes, and make sure that the Kangas' midfielders are always under the pump when they have the ball. Do that, and their talls won't have much of an impact.

Losing Ego sucks bad, but we are still the best team in the league, and we can adjust without throwing guys all over the ground.

If his name wasn't Ablett, would he have ever got a game at Geelong?

How many times do we have to go through this?

If his name wasn't Ablett he would have had no problem going and playing TAC U/18s and getting drafted at 17 or 18 years of age.

Talent is/was not an issue.

Re: Nathan or Hawkins vs North Melbourne

If Bomber wants to bring in Hawkins to make North more accountable (playing a tall down back isntead of Foward) that's fine as long as Nablett is not dropped nor is Mooney sent back.

No, and wouldn't have played anywhere else either because no other club would have picked him up without playing any TAC or equivalent football (only played juniors for in BFL?)

IMO for the finals, i would play NAthan Ablett purely because he has had more experience, and would cope better, however if an injury was to occur to eith him or Mooney then play him.

That's a fair point, although I must say Hawkins doesn't look like he'd be fazed in the slightest. The best game he played in the last few months was against Collingwood - in front of 85,000 people. I don't think playing in finals would worry him.

Play em both:

B: Harley...Scarlett...Mackie
HB: Enright...Milburn...Woja
C: Ling...Gaz...Selwood
HF: Stokes...Nath...Chappy
F: SJ...Mooney...Kelly

Foll: Bartel...Ottens...Corey

Int. Blake, Rooke, Hunt, Hawkins

Tomahawk's time will come but not this year

How good does the future look???
Tomahawk, Davenport, Djerkera, Prismal and Grima to all come into this side....

That's plenty of firepower

I like it, but we will lack a little pace in the forward line omitting both Varcoe and Byrnes.

Not if you swap Stokes and Kelly (so that Stokesy plays almost totally inside 50), and then you've got Gaz Jr and Chappy rotating down there as well. Not as fast as usual, but still very mobile.

Not just that, but better skills, and much stronger physically than Byrnes or Varcoe as well.

A key factor in our loss to Port was that with Stokes, Byrnes and Varcoe in the team we had 3 small guys, instead of 1 or at most 2. I lost count of the number of times those guys were flattened in heavy tackles. It won't be that easy to do against Ablett or Chapman (or Rooke or Bartel etc).

That's what I was thinking as well. Also, had it in mind that with Rooke rotating through the midfield he could take Ling's tag and Ling switch off onto whichever player is being most damaging at that point in time. Attempt to confuse Laidley with their matchups.

I think playing both this week would be a good move against the Roos. Lets not be reactive and think North will outplay us...lets attack their lack of height in defence and back our midfield to beat theirs. I dont care if North score 100 pts in this match if we score 120+...we are quite capable I believe if we continue to be attacking.

Our defensive structure has been hugely important to our success all year but in this particular instance I feel what we already have down back can handle their forwards even without Egan. Lets make them feel they are one tall defensive player short also.

Was about to post something very similar.

They are boasting about having SO much height in their forward line with McIntosh and Hale, Brown etc. But if we load our forward line with Ottens, Hawkins, Mooney and Nathan then they will have to put talls back.

It will be a battle of the midfeilds!

In finals that is so often the case and I think we should feel as confident as any side of competing well in this department for the remainder of this season.
