Agree we should keep working on giving Freeman every chance but still don't get why we haven't rookie listed him. Doesn't sound like he will be fighting for a senior list spot all year. On the other hand NOK looks like he might. Can't see any other club picking him up in his condition and on his salary.
Ummm because you cant just arbitrarily drop someone to the rookie list. You have to delist them and then attempt to draft them again.

Firstly rookie listing is one year which is against his contract and second of all he would be picked up before our first rookie pick without a doubt so we lose him for absolutely nothing.

When was the last time a 21yo player retired because of persistent hamstring injuries. I can't even think of one? Cyril has issues, but they worked through it now he's elite.

He needs time to work out the best training and processes for his body, this is part of that.

I have absolutely no inside knowledge but this would be my guess: Freeman played the last (?)4 VFL games and has been training then holidaying since. No setback but St Kilda and Nathan realise this preaseason could be career defining and want to make sure his program is absoutley spot on so are going to Dr Müller-wohlfahrt for his opinion. Freeman going to Germany now uninjured actually makes me feel a little more optimistic. Fingers crossed.

I wonder if Freeman has gone to Germany for a final check up to determine if the pre season training program matches the state of of his hammies. If its anything other than that I wouldn't think its a good sign.

Anyone know when pre season actually starts this year?

For first to forth year I think it's next week. I think he will be on a special program which is maybe why he is over there at the moment.

Contract isn't an issue. As long as you pay them the agreed amount, it doesn't matter whether it's the senior list, rookie list, or you just give them a lump sum at some point.

I think saying the plan failed is unfair. he played more football for us this year then he did in the last 2 at the pies.

Just to excite everyone, ask any stkilda listed player what they think of Nathan and they will tell you he is a freak a gun.
Doesn't mean a thing. Every bloke at the club thought Spencer White was the most freak talent we'd had in the door of the club in 10 years... Didn't work out so well

So what was the go with him late in the year, when he was getting about 5 disposals per game for Sandy seniors, had he been told to just go at about 70% of full pace, or what?

He was playing forward pocket mostly. It was more about getting on the park

The games I saw he was playing back and midfield.

Clearly running at less than full space (once his direct opponent ran AWAY from him into goal - with Nathan jogging along behind).

However having said that, he is a beast at tackling.

That is clearly a part of his game that has not suffered and is still strong.

I went to the games to specifically watch him.

My impression was that of a player clearly playing within his capacity, someone who has been told to get on the park and get a feel for the game.

Under instructions to get game time.

And further to that, remember he played the last third of the season: 7 consecutive games. 4 in the firsts and the last 3 in the development league (the latter because I think because Sandringham was gearing up for finals).

That's got to be a planned strategy.

Here is hoping he is first class and not cattle as the leg room might be defeating the purpose of the trip

Yes it does, the rookie list is a 1 year contract under AFL rules. You cannot delist him and then just stick him on the rookie list without paying out his initial contract entirely and then attempting to rookie list him.

The point is that its a stupid as shit idea that helps no one, especially not Freeman who at this point requires confidence in his body and himself to forge a career. Loyalty is not "oh you might take longer then we expected to play so good luck in the rookie draft lol."

Okay, thought about this a bit more given people's responses.

I really focused on him in the Round 17 game against Williamstown, particularly the last quarter.

This would have been his third of the four consecutive games in the seniors.

(I was down the Hampton St end and Willy were kicking that way: Sandy were in their end of season play for early draft picks funk rather than let's get ready for finals, and Willy were playing contested, in tight football. A combination guaranteed to produce a shocking spectacle.)

He was playing inside mid and small defender, and given the context of the game - particularly that last quarter, the Sandy backline was seeing a lot of the ball.

He only had 12 possessions for the game (same as Sinclair) but 4 marks and 4 tackles.

I reckon those tackles all happened in the last quarter.

To give you a reference: his tackling is comparable to that of Mav Weller or David Armitage.

I remember thinking that he seemed to enjoy/relish the body contact.

Seemed to get great satisfaction putting someone into the turf.

It was like he had been missing something and now had rediscovered it.

And given it was so scrappy, he spent a great deal of time standing under the rucks and in packs. Not much opportunity for break out flair there.

This was also the game and quarter where his direct opponent ran away from him and kicked the goal.

Look, he wasn't great but he wasn't hopeless either.

He played at the same level as most of his teammates.

But he was clearly playing within himself, which is why I found it so interesting.

I was (positively) surprised by his tackling and his inside game: I had a different impression of him as a player.

And there was absolutely nothing to distinguish his performance from anyone else on the park, and by that I mean his injury history.

To all intents, he was just another player.

Which given his history, is a huge positive.

He played more football in those seven weeks than the two years he had at Collingwood.

He was comfortable in his environment.

He held his own.

And apart from the cautious running, I saw nothing that limited his ability to perform.

My take on this was the club decided to get game time into him, to rebuild his confidence in his body and his ability to prepare for next year.

Whether that was with Sandy or in the Development League was not relevant as there is no questioning his natural skills.

And I think it worked.

I did not see a player second guessing his football, simply one playing to instruction, within a defined limit.

So the trip to Germany should be seen in this context.

I think it more likely the trip is preparatory to removing his running restriction.

To reaffirm the progress to date, and to put in place the programme that will put an unencumbered Nathan Freeman back on the park.

I have never heard anyone say that about Spencer.

Great post !!!!!

Him going at half pace in the VFL was most likely instruction, given that someone on here mentioned that they saw him begin to start chasing at full pace but pull back and chase slower as if he'd forgotten and instinct had taken over for a split second.

So far I haven't heard anything from the club that Germany has had anything to do with Nathans' rehab so to go there to remove running restrictions or reaffirm his progress would seem strange to say least.
It would appear to me that we aren't where we thought we should be at this point and need to search for new ideas

Putting my tin foil hat on for a second...

Could it be that the club has seen his psychological barriers and that he is lacking confidence in his body? So the club has decided to cough up 10k to get the best expert in the world to look over him and confirm that there's nothing holding him back. And hope that allows him to just go out and back himself and his body.....

That could be it.

Of course, it could also be that he's ****ed! ;)

What are you doing with Spacemans hat?
Think you are correct.
The hammies have referred pain to the head but that too can be fixed with confidence.
