The Saints are refusing to give up on the prospect of Nathan Freeman making his AFL debut, despite the luckless wingman suffering another hamstring setback that may require surgery.
"This setback cruels him a little bit but we're confident he'll keep working away and hopefully this year he gets there because he certainly deserves it," Saints football manager Simon Lethlean said.

"He's a much-loved player down here and a resilient kid, and we're looking forward to really supporting him and getting him back on the track as soon as possible."

This is the first hamstring issue he's had that I'm aware of since he started playing again for Sandy dev league and seniors for the last 8 or whatever games of the 2016 season, which means that the last one prior to that was about mid-2016 (which he would have to have recovered from, before playing those games).

So that was about 20 months ago.

He had hamstring issues in preseason of 2017 hence his self-funded trip to Germany to see the world renowned hamstring guru. There were also whispers of him remaining on a modified program early this preseason Nov/Dec due to some awareness issues, which has now led to the decision to have this surgery after if has become worse during late Jan/early Feb.

Sure, the “every 4 months” line was a bit of a throwaway based on his last 12 months, but this latest setback clearly shows there is still a massive issue with that hamstring. I’d say 9-10 months at best, namely last year, has been his longest timeframe for being free of hamstring trouble & even that isn’t really true as he had a hamstring awareness issue in round 16 of the VFL last year before hurting his ankle 2 games later

Think we have been hand feed what the club want us to hear. He has hamstring awareness a few times since mid 2016 otherwise this would hardly be a serious issue. Unfortunately it seems the recruitment wont work but I still say it was worth the risk. It isn't as if every pick in the draft we get right. I just feel sorry for the person.

Mate, if you can't stand reading what I have to say please just shut up and put me on ignore. You question everything, it's incredibly dull and I don't have time sitting here making sure joop understands everything 100% of the time. For instance I mentioned last week that the intraclub was happening this week, and you then asked me what day it was on. When is it ever enough for you? Apologies for asking what day it was, I had a day off this week so was going to head down and see if I could have a look and post what I saw here, surely with your info you could’ve just said Thursday and that would’ve been the end of it?

The club is still considering it. He hasn't gone in for surgery yet.

Looks like he has now so hopefully he has a speedy recovery.

Yeah I certainly wouldn't trust what the club feed us as far as I could throw it, but I'm just surprised I haven't really even heard rumours of any issues for the great majority of that time, as usually that sort of stuff manages to seep out.

Fingers crossed clearing up the scar tissue does the trick and he gets to have a fair crack at an AFL career from here. Otherwise it will presumably be time to get the fork out.

Recovering from a hamstring injury
Lack of use, particularly if splinting, results in muscle shrinkage and the formation of scar tissue where the tear is healing. Excessive scar tissue prevents healthy muscle function, as it doesn't stretch and move as normal muscle does..

To avoid these complications rehabilitation exercises need to begin early. After a few days, once the pain has subsided, you should start to do regular gentle hamstring stretches followed by a programme of gentle exercise, such as walking and cycling, and hamstring strengthening exercises. Always warm up before exercising and cool down and stretch afterwards. Stop if pain returns.

To avoid injuring yourself again, you should only return to a full level of activity when your hamstring muscles are strong enough. Re-introduce running only gradually. Your physiotherapist will be able to advise you about this and advise on a suitable graded exercise programme.

Re-injury is extremely common and is often due to avoidable premature return to sport by athletes desperate to get back to fitness. Sportsmen are highly motivated and are likely to have set personal goals for training, timing and performance. However, re-injury not only prolongs recovery, it also increases the risk of permanent damage.

What can I expect from rehabilitation?

• Control of pain and swelling and acceptable range of motion and flexibility.
• A gradual strengthening programme should follow.
• When strength has returned, a gradual return to the desired sport can be attempted. Full return is usually possible only after maximal flexibility and strength have been obtained.
• Depending on the severity of injury, full rehabilitation may take several months.

By the looks if he had scar tissue , it should of been removed before - looks like a blue to me - hope he gets back quickly , but by the looks it will be be several mths , going by the articles I've read.

Kicked 6 (of his 24 career AFL goals) on his birthday against the Eagles in '98, led the forward line without Loewe, Hall and Winmar roaming.

Delisted at the end of '99 after only 38 games and then played in the SANFL until 2005 where he played 135 games.

Ability would be the main reason or lack there of. Like many in that era we thought they were better than they were. Lets face it when we were good in that period he didn't play much and when we were bad and we were really bad he couldn't hold his spot. Having said that I thought he looked good but he obviously wasn't.

His crowning achievement at anything in life was being a Cleo batchelor of the year from memory. Can't actually recall him playing Adelaide. Must have been good.
