Surely this guy is the next captain of the AFC? He is just an exceptional young player, and words cannot describe the commitment and courage this guy displays on a weekly basis. In one contest tonight, he was running straight towards a Collingwood player who had a full head of steam, and I was holding my breathe. He is just returned from a broken collarbone and yet there were no second thoughts towards the contest. This is what VB is all about.

And then as he finally came on the field in the second quarter, he applied a brilliant tackle on Rocca which resulted in a turnover. VB is just the most fearless player in our team, and he is also very skillful. Whenever he’s on the ground we look a better side and I don't know why it takes Craig so long to put him on.

Next captain of the Adelaide Football Club? Must be high up on the list. :thumbsu:

All jokes aside it is amazing how tough this kid really is.
Every time he is near the footy we end up with it because he is giving 200%!

(I know it is only possible for a person to give 100% but a Van Berlo can give much more)

Next Captain?

My vote goes to Ben Rutten, an absolute monty to get it in my opinion.

It's tough to captain a side from full back.

While I don't agree with Drummond's overall ratings of ruckmen etc, I do agree with his comments re Van Berlo as a potential future leader of the club.

Has all the attributes IMO. :thumbsu:

could you expand a bit more on this?

I actually made a mistake because Silvagni was only ever a vice captain and not a captain.

I was just making the point that guys have captained from full back before. Yes is it more common to have a midfield in this role, but comes down to their leadership qualities.

I think it might be Rutten merely because he is slightly older than Van Berlo. Definately Van Berlo and Reilly should be in the leadership group next season IMO.

Much has been written about the great man - but there are some VB characteristics that remind me of a young Buckley.

  • fearless tackler
  • arrogance - almost ownership of the contest belying his years.
  • ability to stab 40 metres lace out off one step...
  • running gait
  • length of kick for such a skinny kid.

brave comparison - but their are some early physical similarities

Roo will be handing over the captaincy at the end of 2007, so he says which will probably be too early for VB. However, I could see us going with a caretaker captain ie. Goodwin while waiting for VB.

Mate I have it on (very) good authority that he's touted within the club as being a competition elite midfielder within 3 years.

Massive call I agree but the club made a huge statement when he was brought back into the side as soon as he was fit. Everyone compares him to Bickley because in his first year his disposal was a little iffy. They forget he was playing AFL football as an 18 year old. Fast track a year ahead and his foot skills are sensational (IMO). Just needed time to adjust to the pace of the game.

Once he adds some muscle mass this kid will be an outright superstar. If you wanted me to pick the young kid who'll go on to be a champion of the competition from our club I'd name Van Berlo first (even ahead of Douglas & that's saying something).

The way to go IMO.

How old was Roo when he took over as skipper? 24? 25? Can anyone please confirm?

I'd like to see VB as our skipper at around a similar age.

I think it was 2001 when he took over from Bicks, 26 at the time.

Reilly hasn't shown enough on field to suggest that he's capable of a leadership role. I think Thommo has taken some steps this year towards being part of the leadership group. He still needs to cut down on the clumsy free kicks he gives away, but has shown he has the mental strength to stand up when the chips are down.

Definetely will be a captain of the AFC.

Absolute gun, his disposal, determination, tackling, and attitude are already great, and are only going to improve.

I picked him early last year to be a champion, and hes not making a liar of me.
