Nathan Van Not Captain

I actually said as he lined up for goal.

"Come on vB, you wannabe Captain? Then nail this goal."
It was a tough shot under a bit of pressure.
The rest is history.

That is pretty much what I said too, it was a very tough shot.

After reading this thread, I have watched the first half again, with a view to looking at VB in particular. While his first half was not great in terms of posessions, he did a bit of work off the ball and laid some tackles.

He was instrumental in the lead up to Dougies goal in the second quarter. Started at half back with a tackle, got a tap on out on the wing, kept going to win the ball inside 50 and gave the handball to Dougie for goal.

Made an absolute howler of a kick towards a leading Tipp - missed him bby 30 metres!

The "ball allowed to bounce" early in the third quarter was one he was never going to reach if you watch it - commentators made more of it than necessary.

My conclusion? His first 3 quarters were not as bad as some people have made out, but not great.

Captain material? I would not make a decision based on just this game...
(pull splinters from my butt from fence-sitting)

Saying he should be Captain based on one quarter is as dumb as saying he shouldn't be.

Where has anyone made the claim that his entire captaincy resume is based upon that one quarter?

That is just a strawman being used by the people who dont want to have to admit that he stood up under pressure today.

That was a captain's goal at the end.

The title of captain is a bit overrated anyway, all of our players should look to stand up when it counts and craigy should be weeding out the ones that don’t step up.

Blight goes on about it in his commentary all the time about using big games to find out which players perform in big games and which ones dont.

Stood up today in the last - credit to himself and the club.

That's his second 'future captains goal' this season in a tight game (that I can recall).

Look - I'm still far from convinced he is the guy I want leading the troops on field. But in some ways thats probably more a reflection of how the club likes to portray its brand (very professional, pc etc) as opposed to a reflection on his ability to lead.

My vote still lies elsewhere but he really stood up in the last today - even before the goal.

I feel, considering there is a thread for the people who want Van Berlo to be captain based on 1 quarter of good footy. There should be a thread for people who aren't ignoring his poor 3 quarters.

While his match winning goal was great, and his last quarter was pretty good, where was he in the first 3 quarters. I mean if we're basing the choice for Captain on this one game shouldn't Richard Douglas be the one, as he performed for the full 4 quarters.

AMEN all these clowns will jump up and down because he kicked a sealing goal, that aint going to make him an instant captain, good on him, but as you say where was he for the rest of the game???

Why you drag my name into things and thats okay:confused:

Anyway what his fave brekky cereal it would have been one of the lame questions you would have asked:thumbsu:

Apologies, won't happen again.

We didn't have a breakfast (as you already knew), nor did we see Craig. Chatted to others though, thanks muchly. You missed out on a top day.

Did more than just kicked the winning goal. Exerted his influence over the entire fourth quarter, when the game was there to be won.

As far as the rest of the game, watch it again, think about his role, and think intelligently for once about his performance. The group think about 'how bad he was' has been drastically overstated.

Watching the game again was he playing on Adcock? I'm not sure, anyway if he was he did a great job. Needed to be more of a scoring threat and stop playing for frees in the first 3 quarters. I'd prefer him to play on a teams best midfielder and today a matchup for him on Black would have been good.

I'm not sure a captain should be a tagger, but give him his chance next week against Collingwood and see if he can inspire the team. After the debacle of Stevens and Doughty being stand in captains VB was refreshing. But maybe Rutten will get a go?
