Was sitting here with my brother watching yesterday's game. Everytime Vardy had the ball we both thought we were watching Jack Hawkins.

Anyone old enough to remember Jumping Jack think that there's any similarity?

I actually thought more Barry Stoneham. He has that height and kind of effortless yet classy movement.....
Im a little pre Jack so I can only go with what i know..

GO Catters

The bloke wearing 26 looks vaguely similar too. Eerie.

Just looks dangerous....he clunked a couple, but he hit some packs 3 deep a few times and almost pulled it off.

Is a superstar in the making, but right now he is the perfect fit for our second ruck. Will be interesting to see if he can back up in the final in his second game back....its a massive ask. Would expect to be heavily rotated off the bench.

But, gawd, you can't help but be excited when you see him play....imagine coupling that with Menzel! BOOM!

I probably should have used likeness and not similarity. Physically and facially he looks like Jack, in our opinions.

When we had our business in Northern Victoria and the door bell went one morning, I walked out and said, 'Here's a familiar face'. He introduced himself as John Hawkins from Finley. I said I don't think so, more like Jumping Jack from Geelong. He had a chuckle and we had a bit of a chat. I asked him where he was off to and he said he had young Tom out in the car, they were on their way to Geelong to get him settled in. He went out and got Tom to come in, he struggled getting through the front door.

Jumpin was may favorite as a kid. One thing to remember though is the size difference. Vardy is ruck height st 198 while Jumpin was only 191 so basically Joel Corey playing at CHB. In an era with so many high flyers and limited TV coverage he probbably is less know to the public than the likes of Vanderhar , Knights, Picken etc but boy could he fly. Sort of a shaby kick but had nice stride on him.

How would he go today. Not sure of the gut running just like Vardy his mobility versus his vertical leap would create all sorts of headaches. His intercept marking would fit right in. Harry Taylor ish

yes, I am that old ... And you are right, Jack was on the skinny side - nothing like Tom. There is a real resemblance.

Jack was a great mark when one on one marking contests were common.

never saw jumping Jack but if Vardy is a similar comparison...I'm impressed :thumbsu:

I have often asked the oldman what jumping Jack was like in comparison to his son and says he was a better mark with a better spring

I doubt that could be true given what we have seen Tom do but those who saw the oldman play could possibly give me a better insight into this if possible?

Take it from one that saw Jumping Jack play, he had a tremendous leap and was far more athletic than Jr. Junior has him covered for size and strength.

wow!
I don't even think there is much footage of him either which is a bloody shame.

Love the look of him but from what happened with t.hawk we've got to remember to be patient with him as these big fellas can take time before they're consistently tearing teams apart.

Great potential Vardy,to get the best out of him we need to get another year out of Pods almost the Mooney,Hawkins thing all over again,he will be a forward not a ruckman in my opinion, the no1 ruck spot is still open at Cat land.
West has the no2 spot tie up and is doing a job as no1 but that can't last,Orren's a stop gap and Simpson is no certainty to make it.

Leo Turner???? Bloody hell....next you'll be comparing Duncan with Carji Greeves!!
From memory we picked up carji greeves when one of our emerging ruckman left to join university for an extra shilling a game. ;) Said ruckman never did play in a premiership, poor fellow.

As I said , Rather than Vardy or Hawk id compare his marking ability to Harry Taylor except he had a much better leap. Its hard to gauge as the average size of player seem taller now. There have been so many really good marks , high flyers over the years. Paul Jefferies remember him. When ever ha came down it was odd on him killing himself.

After watching him last year I didn't really get the hype. Yes he did a few nice things but so does almost every youngster and I thought everyone was going early on him.

First half yesterday...WOWEE!!! The way he jumped at the ball and backed himself was immense particularly for a guy just back from such a massive injury. Looked very comfortable in the ruck or up forward and the timing of his leap is possibly unique for a kid with so few games. Everyone was wondering why we'd play him and why we'd risk him. He answered emphatically yesterday that we should play him because he's easily our best option in that position. Spot cemented for finals I'd say.

Yep! I thought our coach was going to have an orgasm when talking about him post match. :)
