Cant believe that Kyle Korver picked up a first place vote. Who on earth would vote for him ahead of Barbosa. Homer pick for sure.

Rumors:

Source: Mitchell Will Be Named Coach Of The Year 23rd April, 2007 - 7:18 pm National Post -
Sources have confirmed Sam Mitchell will be named the NBA's coach of the year.

The National Post has learned that Mitchell has edged other strong contenders such as Utah's Jerry Sloan and Dallas's Avery Johnson.

"We had a lot of [new] guys, we had a language barrier at the beginning of the year, we had so many obstacles that we had to overcome," Toronto's lone All-Star, Chris Bosh, said Monday before the results of the vote were revealed.

"We had to gel quickly as a team. And for Sam to put us in an environment where we could function, and create an offence where everybody can touch the ball and share the ball and get open shots, that was tough on his part."

If Avery Johnson isn't coach of the year then my name is Betty

Avery Johnson wont get COY, unfortunately it will go to The Smitch. I dont believe he deserves it though - most of the credit should go to Bryan Colangelo who pretty much scrapped last seasons team and started again.

He brought in:

Ford
Bargers
Parker
Garbo
Rasho
Jones

Im probably forgetting someone else, but those are the main guys. 4 of them are starting quality aswell. So yeah credit for Toronto's resurgence should be placed at BC's feet, not Sam Mitchell's.

COY should have gone to Jerry Sloan. No question about it.

But isn't there also a fact of trying to gel that team together ASAP and getting the best out each player?

Its a hell of an effort to get these players that have never played together before and gel them into a team that wins their division and goes from mediocrity into a legit play off team.

IMHO Colangelo is a GM of the Year and one of the very best in the league and credit will go to him for getting the talent into the franchise. Mitchell should get the credit for getting that team to perform and as such should get COTY.

Slaon is a champion coach but the only reason he bounced back after last year is the natural development of Deron Williams and injury free Carlos Boozer.

On PLaystation

in real life Barbosa > Manu

How so?

Barbosa had an above average season. Averaging 18.1 pts, 2.7 boards, 4 assists, 2 treys, 1 steal and 2 TO's.

Manu had a pretty poor year by his standards, but yet was still good enough to be in contention for the sixth man award. He averaged 16.5 pts, 4.4 boards, 3.5 assists 2 treys, 1 steal and 2 TO's.

Pretty even statistically wise. Yet for pure impact on a game, you cant go past Manu, he can single handedly take a game by the scruff of the throat. He also has an Olympic Gold Medal and NBA Championship Ring in his possession.

Sure clearly Barbosa is >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Manu.

Ill admit he has done a stellar job with making this new team gel together. But COY should be about more than that. Mitchell isnt exactly the best X's and O's coach going around. He just doesnt draw up good plays (especially out of timeouts) and that should be a major part of who wins this award.

Well considering Manu started a lot more games than Barbosa, the fact that Barbosa played on a better team and the fact that they are so close on stats its just my opinion.

So then Why is Manu better. If he had a poor year then im taking Barbosa. Better shooter, faster, better passer.

haha.

you know you're losing when you bring past, irrelevant achievements into a seasonal argument. :)

If you told anyone (Raptor fan or not) that the above ^ would happen 6 months ago, they would have laughed (and justifiably so).

He's done an almighty job getting the team all jiggy with it.

You are forgetting one thing here. This is not "The best coach in the league" award. This is a coach of the year award and its generally given to a coach who has the biggest improvement in terms of win-loss record.

Mitchell might not be the best X's and O's type coach but he was good enough to get his team from perenial laughing stock to a division winners despite having to get the team to gel from day one of the training camp. Not to mention the language barriers encountered along the way.

I am not saying Mitchell is the best coach in the league, in fact I don't rate him as a good coach but he deserves the accolades he is getting because of the turnaround in the Raptors from last year to this year.

Now whether someone else would have done the better job, well thats a whole other debate.
