Player Watch Ned Long

I understand the sentiment. Ned played a cracking game against Port. He played with considerable grunt and energy and seems much quicker this year. I thought he was diabolically slow last year, this year, while nobody's idea of a speed demon, his pace seems ok. But I just have to point out that against The Bulldogs, while he did some really good things (9 tackles, lovely pass to Bobby, lovely dish off to Nick), he only got 13 possessions and was credited with no clearances. Thats just not enough for a bloke playing either as an inside mid or high half forward.

So for me the congratulations are a bit premature. He has definitely improved (I'd have delisted him last year) , we definitely need a player of his type but at the moment his 24 disposal game against Port is the outlier, and we need it to be the norm - I want to give him every opportunity but he isnt there yet..
Agree it is still in the positive signs territory - I think we have that we both Long and Allan and need more evidence on both before they are announced as best 22. Getting back to the game, only Sidey got more than one center clearance, Naics only got one, and Pendles didn’t get any. I am not sure how many CC Long attended - but when he was in there I ‘think’ we went okay - not sure on that, just a recollection. Also do you know who gets credited with the CC, is it the person who clears the area or is it the person who initiates the original handball or tap? We don’t want Long being the one to kick it unless there is no choice.

It's only a month difference but that's wild. He's such a brute of a physical specimen.

It's first possession in the chain that clears the stoppage.

Rupert Wills, Brayden Sier and now Ned Long.
As far as I’m concerned, Sier has the most ability of this trio, but not the dedication. Wills was very strong, but also very slow in his decision making.
Long’s attack on the ball is first rate but his disposal really lets him down. I hope he can make it but I’m not sold.
Disposal has been fine the last 2 games.
His role calls for quick hands or feet out of tight packs.
His best attribute, apart from getting the ball inside, is his ability to hold up the opposition if they get it and his second and third efforts in close.

I only hope that he starts to get reward for effort when he has a shot on goal.

3-4 opportunities in the last 2 weeks he has missed.
Pretty sure it come if he keeps getting shots.

If he's getting a goal a game his stock will have risen a lot.

Pretty sure tay Adams lasted 200 games with poor kicking [emoji23] Ned will be fine
He seems to be much improved on last year and only just turned 22
Still has plenty of improvement in him

He's going at 59% disposal efficiency, we've had a lot worse and probably still do

Considering he handballs more than kicks, not really.

Let's not pretend his kicking has been anything other than horrible.

It's nice to see him get a contract though because he seems like a good lad and tries really hard, worst case scenario he's solid depth.

What about that kick to Bobby?

I'm rapt for the bloke. I had him delisted at some stages last year. It's a credit to him the way he has forced his way into the best 23. He plays with great aggression and passion but just needs to slow down and think before he kicks the pill as he is often under far less pressure than he thinks. He seems to shin some of his kicks such is his rush to get boot to ball. He could easily have snagged 4 goals in the past two games with a bit more poise.

I'm much more bullish on him than that. I reckon he'll prove you wrong by the end of the year. He's a beast in there and very hard to tackle. His handpasses under pressure have been first class.

I enjoy Hoyne's segment each week as the data picks up stuff that the eye misses.

But the reverse is also true and Hoyne's dogmatism when it comes to stats means that he isn't able to account for that. Rather than saying "this is the data and it can help us understand and appreciate what's going on" he insists that it's near infallible and almost all- encompassing. Data doesn't account for the game being played by humans. There's emotional momentum to games, there are key acts that lift a team that won't count as a more than another stat in Champion Data's eyes. All that good stuff that we love, they miss.

Minor gripe: I wish someone down at SEN would teach Hoyney how to pronounce the word "his". Hearing him say "he's" each week does my bloody head in.

And to make it relevant to Ned again, that's by far the best I've seen him utilise that massive rig of his. He needs to tackle hard, back it up with repeat defensive efforts and play "see ball get ball" to stay in the side.
Love this post. Trouble with all data used in AFL is its done by people who have no statistical training so the interpretations are pretty meaningless overall.

I am pretty sure if you did bring in a real statistician their conclusion would be its interesting data but unfortunately you can't draw any significant conclusions from it.

At the end of the day it gives some guidance but the conclusion drawn from it are uncertain. That's how the AFL should see it. Hoynes great to listen to but at the end of the day he is a zealot who doesn't really understand what he is doing. Drawing up lists of data and then doing basic comparisons and finishing with big conclusions isn't statistics.
