Neesham questions Schwab’s position at Dockers

2nd June 2008, 17:15 WST

Inaugural Fremantle coach Gerard Neesham has questioned whether the Dockers have made the right decision in allowing outgoing chief executive Cameron Schwab to see out the season.
Schwab has been instrumental in Fremantle's off-field revival since 2001 but announced in April he would be leaving the club at season's end - a year before his contract was due to expire.
Schwab, who will move back to Melbourne for family reasons, has already met with AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou about taking up a new position at AFL headquarters.
It is a role that would wield great influence in the establishment of franchises on the Gold Coast and western Sydney.
But Neesham questioned how Schwab could contribute to Fremantle's future planning with one foot already out the door.
“I find it an unusual situation that someone's still heavily involved in the day to day running of the club and they are moving on, yet you don't know where they are moving on to,” Neesham told AAP.
“I think in the normal business world that person would shift immediately.”
Seven straight losses have seen the Dockers, who entered 2008 in premiership mode, slump to a disastrous 1-9 record.
Fremantle possesses the oldest list in the competition and coach Mark Harvey has publicly stated he will turn his attention to youth at the next draft.
But Neesham said the Dockers had to tread carefully when contemplating a total list overhaul, saying the club risked losing superstar Matthew Pavlich if they entered an extensive rebuilding phase.
“It seems that (period from 2003 onwards) was the period in time where there was an opportunity to really press for finals and a grand final berth but ... that opportunity appears to have slipped,” Neesham said.
“Do you go back and rebuild? They are in an unusual situation.
“If you decide you want to rebuild, what happens to Pavlich?
“He'll say 'hang on, I don't want to be in a rebuilding phase, I want to play in the finals or I want to move somewhere else'.
“So you expose yourself a bit on that front.”
Fremantle's 28-point loss to Port Adelaide on the weekend marked the club's fifth consecutive game in which they squandered a three-quarter time lead.
It was the first time in VFL/AFL history that such a horrendous run had occurred, eclipsing St Kilda's run of four set back in 1940.
“Records are there to be broken - we've done it the opposite way,” Fremantle vice-captain Josh Carr said.
“That's just the way football is.
“We are shattered with it and disappointed but you've got to move on.”

And what qualifications does Gerard have to comment on this? Seriously, all we need is for CC to come out and bag the club and we'll have the trifecta. A simple 'no comment' is all that is required from our past 'greats'.

I agree with Neesham. We shouldnt totally rebuild and Schwab needs to go as soon as possible for the successor to came in give direction to the club. We have alot of injuries to key players and lost alot of games by less 20 points.

I dont want us to trade away our future, but selecting young projects with less than 10% chance doesnt make seems to. Only need to delist 8 players to get picks 4,22,38, 54 (70 is a waste of space) in national draft, 4th in pre season draft and picks 4,20,36 (52 is a waste of space).

Shouldn't we take our time to find the best person for the job though, rather than rushing in to an appointment just to get rid of Schwab?

I agree that we don't need a total rebuild, and I don't think anyone involved with the club has suggested we do. Harvey has stated he will use our draft picks to select young players, so far, that is what he has done.

If Neesham wants to somehow assist the club, there are many better and more constructive ways than talking about something he knows nothing about and getting his photo in the paper.

He makes one point that we are all thinking though:

If Freo are going to rebuild and stay in the bottom half for a while - Pav will probably leave. He has always implied that the only reason he was staying was to play finals.

Ever heard of a 'caretaker'? We had one while Schwab was on his freo paid education wank fest. Didn't appear to matter.

Happens in business all the time.

Don't see why it is different here.

Massive conflicts of interest coming up.

Would love to see the part of his contract about subsequent employment...

I wasn't much of a Neesham fan until now. Onya Gerard. :thumbsu:

Like Chops has said, we managed without Schwab for a period last year, why can't we manage now? And to make matters worse the prick was in the coaches box Yesterday. **** Off Cam!!!

There hasnt been comment that i've seen about Graham Wood, mentioned last week in The Worst taking over as CEO.

The story could have been a beat up, nevertheless, I'd have him. He is Freo supporter. Probably Member.
He even played for Old Easts. Dunno if he got a league game.

Neesham. He can say whatever he wants whenever he wants to, It's a free world.

Strange out of the blue article from Uncle Gerard.

Macca must be out of the team next week. ;)

The walls have ears...

Interestingly, Brian Ciccotosco was on 6pr this morning talking about the derby, and was asked about whether he would consider CEO for Freo or had been approached...unusually, he started talking like he had a mouthful of marbles and mumbled that he had had an informal approach but nothing he would consider serious...

You love a good conspiracy theory, don't ya Rip.

Break the article down.

We owe it to Pav to play finals.
We don't need a full rebuild

I.E. get rid of a few fringe players, keep the experienced ones and have a shot next year for Pav.

Can't have a bloke thats leaving running around tapping blokes on the shoulder to tell them it's time.

With a high draft pick or two. Both mids, and we have Hase back.
Things can turn around quickly in this game. They haven't for us so far, though !!!!!!!!

I think everyone agrees with that. Harvey said yesterday that we'll keep blooding the young blokes but no one will be pushed into retirement mid-season, and that Matt Carr made the decision off his own bat without any pressure from the club.

Also said that there will be some changes this week and that Johnson would have come in for Bell if Perth were scheduled to play Monday like everyone else (that would have been a popular decision ).

Why does the FFC owe anything to Pav? he's well paid for his efforts. No-one has twisted his arm to sign his last three contracts. He thougth like many others that the dockers had a chance to play finals in 2008.

marcus ashcroft played over 290games with brisbane bears/lions before he tasted a premiership and paul williams went over 300 games(Pies/swans)(holds record) before he tasted success.

Do you like anyone at the club?

an robert harvey can play 500 games for st kilda and still wont get a premiership.

Pav deserves to have played more finals footy

Noone deserves a premiership thats something a team must earn.
Doesnt matter how big a star you have in the team an how much he tries a premiership has to be earnt through a team effort.

Slightly hypocritcal Dom?

Yes pavlich should have played in more finals for FFC, so should have belly, macca, shane parker etc etc

Slightly, but today you've had a crack at Pav and Josh, and Hase, Dessie and Sandilands always seem to be in the gun over on your site. Pretty sure Bell was copping it for commuting from Geraldton too, so that's about 6 of our top ten players right there.
