pretend?????

the primary purpose of university is traditionally NOT as a vocational education centre.

And yet most of the advertising you see on TV for Universities has to do with getting the job of your dreams. If Universities primary purpose isn't to get a specific job... then what the hell is it for?

Universities are supposed to be for the advancement of knowledge, for knowledge's sake.

Hmm never seen THAT advertised. :D

Can see the ad now:

Come to university, pay thousands of dollars - JUST FOR THE HELL OF IT! :thumbsu:

Universities are generally run as research institutions. Teaching is a secondary - but necessary - part of all that.

Unis generally make the bulk of their money from research grants.

I reckon they would make a fair bit out of international student fees these days. ;) Having been in and around the university environment for over 30 years, I'd say the majority of students are attending university as a means to an end - ie. they want to get a job out of it. A very small % of students are "professional" students and there purely for the love of learning.

Only 26% of research grants go to Universities for on-costs. The majority of their money is gained from students and government grants for infrastructure.

I went to Uni because I loved not working. At least I was able to put it off for a few years before the grim 9-5 reality set in.

maybe everyone is looking into it way to far. for all we know Patty could be getting ahead of himself or NC is just trying to dampen expectations on the poor lad.

People may be missing the trees because of the forest here. Maybe there has been something else happen at the club that has impacted on the playing group, and this is a way that Craig can admonish his star pupil publicly without drawing attention to what has really pissed him off.

well there is always that :D

Yeah, pretty much this. I finished my undergrad and thought "crap, I have to start working a real job now!!" but then I realised there was light at the end of the tunnel - postgraduate research! :D

Just a little warning to those who want to put off starting work in their early earning years, coming from someone who is at the other end of the life scales, but the quicker you start putting money into a super fund or create a tidy little next egg along the way, you will have to work much later in life to be able to live even affordably when you do retire. I realise not many think of such things when young but it will come back to bite you if you don't.

except for the last 10 months - we have all gone back 5 years :D

To be honest, putting too much focus on your initial degree is a mistake anyway. Very few people know what they want to do for life in their first year of Uni. Realistically, if you do anything, but do it well, you'll be in good stead for future opportunities.

Thats exactly what one of the dudes said to me at one of the info nights. Personally, i dont think that many people would change degrees and i think they have a bit more responsibility to provide the info beforehand.

For that really high bunch (top1%) there would be a reasonably even spread imo, theres always 1 or 2 smarties at every school.

I went to a school (Eynesbury) in 2000 where 23 students got a TER of 99.00 or higher. There wouldn't have been 200 people total in SA and NT that achieved those scores.

There are 1 or 2 smarties in each school. A school I went to previously (St. Pauls) was full of idiots but there was still a dude there who got 99.5. But in some schools in particular, there are not 1 or 2 smarties, there are 10 or 20. A lot of it has to do with the scaling system which ensures that if a lot of people at a school perform well, the whole class gets scaled up.

i assumed that because the scores were so high the 'elite school factor' wouldnt of kicked in yet. Obviously wrong! I get what ST was saying that st.peters is going to have overall higher scores than say somewhere like salisbury high, but i thought it was in the 75-95 range.

This is also true. Mind you, you don't need to be getting 99% in your work to get a high grade. Maths 2 was my best subject in year 12, I averaged 86% throughout the year, yet ended up with a 20. I certainly didn't get 95% of my mathematics correct, but realistically nobody does so you get scaled up.

I used to know exactly how the scaling system worked but nowadays I've forgotten most of it.
