I love the 97 call in the last qtr when all dennis has to say is one word and we know what happens

that was "jarman"

:D I can still hear that particular call in my head - that's a commentator!

Many favourites out of that game

"They battle on the logo"

"Its all about appetite and they are both hungry"

Roberts though was terrible. There is a piece of commentary in 98 when Smart kicks a goal in the last quarter that I still can't work out what he says after watching it 50 times plus.

Taylor is an absolute shocking commentator. He is so biased against any team that is non-Victorian it's a joke.

Agreed and it even gets to the point where he doesn't even know half the interstate teams players and guesses and gets it wrong most of the time! Highly unprofessional for a sports commentator to not even know the players!

Sandy: "He gets a kick away" pause "He GETS A KIIIICK"pause "OOOOOH Nigel!!"
This was the goal Smarty pulled out of his behind after being spun around in the tackle, it just bounced through on an angle after dribbling off his boot. Great memory of watching the Roos players heads go down after that.

In addition to Cometti I also like Dwayne Russell and Gerard Healy. Both are knowledgeable, eloquent and have a good sense of humour. I remember Healy getting slightly lost for words during a Showdown once then getting out of trouble neatly:- "Primus has got cramp, and when you've got big legs you get....big cramp!"

Quite like Grybas, Commetti, Hudson, Jason Bennett, Tim Lane, Dwayne Russell, Brayshaw, of the commentators we have at the moment!

Can i say that Brian Taylor, Michael Christian, Wayne Schwass, Matthew Campbell, and Stephen Quartermain are terrible...i cringe whenever i need to listen to them...

I actually dont mind Sandy Roberts as a footy commentator...but im obviously in the minority :)

The pick of all footy commentators that ive had the pleasure of listening to since i was a weeeeeeeee little tacker, would be Bruce "Special" McAvaney...the guys a star and his passion for the game and anything sport for that matter comes across strongly in his calls...closely followed by Dennis "Centremetre Perfect" Commetti...

On another note, must McChins always let us viewers know that Dennis is the top caller in the country as voted by his peers...get over it, we know he's good, he knows he's good, we dont need to be told every Friday night as the balls being bounced!

Oh, so true. And the tone of voice he used...

I've mentioned this before but that game also featured Bruce, after a Jarman goal late in the game - "That'll do .... That - Will - Do!" :D

If thats the one with about 3 or 4 minutes to go i think it goes something liek this..

smart, firing in at goal, and good night north melbourne, nigels done it!

but that took me about 50 or so times of listening to it carefully to figure that out...

dennis had a classic a couple of weeks ago in the brisbane west coast game

the wheel is still turning but the hampster is dead!!

There are some great memories being brought back with these comments.

My personal favourite in the '98 GF was when DC says " Mohammed Ali is watching on and right now Adelaide have Nth Melbourne on the ropes." Funny thing is, we were still a point down. ;)

DC made another good Ali analogy on Friday Night about us employing the rope-a-dope in the 1st quarter before coming back in the last 3 Q's.

i quite like Bruce when Troy Bond kicked a tough goal
in the pocket in the 1st qtr i think it was...it went...

"Is it a goal...i think it is!" Still gives me goose bumps! :) His tone of voice is spot on 100% of the time

after kane johnson kicks a goal in the third quarter and they show a dude decked out in corws gear getting fired up, and brucie going off in the background "They're back, They're back"

that send the shiver down the spine every time! :)

and there i was thinking that this thread was all about more shenigans down the Port way:

viz - Peter Burger mooning Elijah Ware :D

oh well - bugger! (pardon the pun)

I remember when Nine got the rights thinking that they wouldn't want to take Brereton from Seven but they did so it may well happen in reverse.

What do people think of Steve Quartermain? IMO he is out of his depth as a sports commentator, too many "oohs" when something happens. In addition he often doesn't seem to be able to pick out what is significant in the action and makes irrelevant comments while his colleagues are trying to talk about the important stuff.

just a quicky from jack> why do you post on here when you dont like crows ppl on your board. Jack awaits your response. Thankyou.

Bruce: "They've done what we thought was impossible. They've been to Perth to Melbourne to Sydney to Melbourne and back again...(siren)...and there it is, they are a super team, no question!"

Got to love that quote. I especially like the "they are a super team, no question" bit, as old arrogant Leigh Matthews tried to knock us down in the last quarter when Tim Watson said we are a super team. He responded with his whiny little "well, they're actually an average minor round team but a super september team" or something along those lines to which Watson replied, "Well it's the only time that matters." Go Tim and Bruce!

Come to think of it, I think Matthews tried to downgrade Jars' performance in the '97 GF as well. Went something like...
Bruce: "He has played a game and a half and they are home"
Leigh (in stupid whiny tone): "Weeeeeeell, he certainly has played a great second half but not really a whole game"

The Matthews' quotes aren't direct, can't remember exactly what he said, but he sure had something against the Crows' success.

Love BM' commentry in the last 3 secs of the 97 GF:

'There is nothing left, but to celebrate, the bounce(siren) there it is the Adelaide Football Clubs first AFL Premiership'

I think just about every commentator has been named except one - Kevin Bartlett. IMO KB is one of the better ones. Comes up with a few classics......his call in the third quarter of the 97 prelim - "we thought the fire had gone out.....but the pilot was still lit!" - was a beauty

Yeah I dont mind KB.
"Its Edwards ...the juggler.... :D to Burton...the Clown" etc

Brereton gave me the sh*ts the other night. My finger cant quite find the mute button quick enough when he starts dribblin; self righteous crap!

Dennis Commetti is the best commentator going around. At least he doesn't scream his head of when one of his favourites gets near the ball, or when someone kicks a goal.
What does "bends it back" mean? Anyone ever heard of a player "bending it forward?"
A football's trajectory cannot be made to "bend."
