What do you guys think about Dermott Brereton as a future Crows coach. Personally I think the guy would do well. He's got charisma and - more importantly - creativity. I think he would be a very cagey match-day coach.

Plus, maybe I'm hearing things, but I think the guy's got a special place in his heart for the Crows. Every time I hear him call a Crows game it seems as though he makes a special effort to point out the good aspects of the Crows (including having multiple orgasms anytime McLeod does something awesome). For example, in the one game Schuback played he made a special mention about how fast the kid is - even though the other team (I think it was St. Kilda - but I'm not sure) was in the midst of a shot on goal.

Based on the above, I think he could be persuaded to take the job.

Any thoughts?

Ayres will coach the Crows in 2004.

No way to Dermie, as he he thinks he is smarter than he really is (the only benefit is that he would no longer be commentating on Ch9). Also, he is only interested in the Crows because his old team mate is coaching us.

Dermie was a great player but he looks a little too comfortable in the media to make a serious attempt at coaching.

If we were ever to changes coaches there are plenty of good assistant coaches with experience....O'Donnell (Brisbane) and Harvey (Essendon) are two who could become senior coaches at some stage in the next 5 years.

I'd take Gary O'Donnell...

Played his career under Sheedy... learned his craft as an assistant under Matthews at Brisbane.

There's no salary caps for coaches - if Ayres doesn't cut it next year we go for O'Donnell with an offer he can't refuse.

Although he made it pretty clear on White Line Fever the other night that he is very at home in Brisbane. Perhaps $$$ would change his mind, who knows...

I agree. He would have all the credentials you would want in a coach. A premiership player, played under one of the best and most cunning coaches in the league and has been as assistant to a coach that has won 3 in a row. Definelty has best credentials of all the other assistant coaches

I am sure he would REALLY consider it if he was given the head job (excuse the punt:p).

Every assistants dream is to be a head coach. Why would O'Donnell be any different??????

No, you're quite right. The head job would probably sway his thinking. :D

You'd pretty much expect him to say that. I can't imagine anyone who's made a career out of coaching wouldn't eventually want to become a head coach.

Exactly what I was thinking. Four or so years under Matthews and having being taught to play the game by Kevin Sheedy, couldn't get much better preparation than that. He'd be the perfect choice for our next coach. Unless ofcourse Ayres brings us a premiership next year.

No Way to Dermie:rolleyes: Yes to Gary O'Donnell He will want to be a senior coach eventually and they anit going to be booting Matthews out the door in a hurry;) Gary O'Donnell, Do You Like Adelaide???? I hope you do cause Adelaide doesnt really like Gary Ayres:mad:

what about Peter Jonas?

Not as much experiance as O'Donnell (also a good candidate, btw) but has some very good credentials (assistant to Blight and Roos plus a flag with Central District), and he's an Adelaide boy to boot!

I demand he be at least interviewed anyway. :D

Agree. He seems to have the goods.

As for Dermie, can't say I'm a big fan of him as a coach. I think Gary Lyon has the potential, but like Dermie don't think he'll want to give up his luctrative media work.

I reckon Peter Jonas would be worth a shot before the others... Gary O'Donnell would be good, and I reckon even giving Dermie a shot wouldn't be that bad... I bet he'd make an alright coach...

But yes, Jonas is the logical option after Ayres methinks...

Have you ever met Dermie??

Nice bloke, but not overly modest and his sexual activities make Carey look like the Pope.

Definitely here for a good time, not a long time.:)

Gary Ayres will have had 5 years at the end of 2004. Anything short of a grand final appearance will probably see him gone.

I agree that O'Donnell is well credentialled to take over from Ayres. I think he'd jump at it. Especially with the type of inducements that Stiffy is offering. ;)

Dermott Brereton as coach? I can only see two problems with that choice...

a) Coaches really need to earn their job through an apprenticeship as an assistant these days. The only debut coach to come straight out of the media in recent times was Tim Watson for St Kilda in 1999. He was an abysmal failure.

b) Brereton is as thick as two short planks.

I second that! Jonas is the man IMO.

I'm not a fan of "in house" appointments...

Darel Hart, Mark Mickan, Neil Craig and Peter Jonas can all stay well clear of the helm - and while we're at it, same goes for Shaun Rehn.

For a Head Coach's position I agree but surely you would want someone like Craig, Jonas and Rehn as the assistants

Coachin Panel for 2005

Head Coach: Gary O'Donnell
Midfield Coach: Neil Craig
Ruckmen Coach: Shaun Rehn
Defence Coach: Peter Jonas
Forwards Coach: Wayne Carey
Skills Coach: Daren Jarman

Beat that!!!!!!:):p

Jonas is at the Swans right now though.

why all this bashing of Brereton? Apparently he did all right with the International Series (although that's not a great test).

So what if he's likes women. He's a former professional athlete... they ALL have a lot of "sexual exploits". Ever heard of groupies?

All that stuff means nothing. If the guy can get the job done I don't care if he's a former p*rn star. Thing about Dermott is that he's got flair and I think he'd impart flair to our guys - which is something that Blight did and something that is presently missing from our side - as somebody else pointed out in another thread.

Having said all that, I realize the guy doesn't have a lot of experience and would be a unknown quantity at coach at this point. But I like his comments on TV, they are usually pretty astute (in my limited experience) and I think he'd be a creative coach.
