Does any one know what the new element will be that is added to our game plan this year. I've heard that Hardwicks plan will be released in stages like a new estate. I know he tried very hard to get the boys attacking through the corridor this year and was wondering if anyone knew what phase 2 could or will be.

I'd say were still not even half way through phase 1 of the plan.. we'll get better tho..

Hardwick said in one of his end of year interviews that parts of the plan had taken longer than expected to sink in, suggesting we are a bit behind in our development. So don't be surprised if not much changes first half of next year.

The forward line is definitly our main area of concern next year, adding multiple avenues to goal will be our next 'phase'. With Riewoldt's dramatic improvement the F50 entries were focussed towards him at an absurdly high number. Summer will be spent teaching our players how to look for other viable forward targets, and also teaching the forwards how to take advantage of the open space Riewoldt creates by drawing multiple defenders.

Of course there will be other areas to improve but that has to be a focus.

I'd day our defense is far from being right. We were cut up by teams that played open footy. And Our return of the ball from a kick-in still doesn't give me alot of confidence. So i reckon is that Phase 1 isn't complete.

I'd say that phase 2 will be the mid-field and stoppages, in terms of player positioning and set-plays. We did well in that winning run, mainly due to Cotch and Martin, but later it dropped off and we were being beaten around the packs.

In general with the Midfield, We all know that Jack was being double teamed, but the better teams rely on the mids kicking goals, because its hard to defend against. I reckon hardwick is building up the tanks of the mid-field guys, and thats something that takes a few years.

In general, as a byproduct of the basic "if its your turn to go..." is that we played pretty good contested tight footy

We will be adding our secret innovation up forward next year. It's called Damiens Triangle

...Reiwoldt
Post Griffiths

Stay tuned

Once it goes in, it never comes out?
Rolls off a bit better as "Dimma's Delta"

My version of Dimmas Delta is tall players in each of positions FB, CHB, Ruck, CHF, FF. Then off to each side are smaller players. If you look from either end of the ground, you'll see a Delta shape. It'll be ground breakings. :D

LOL. I was thinking more on the lines of Terry's triangle, but you've made it more interesting with Bermuda
We can also have Damiens accordion method where all players stick close to the spine for as long as possible when in possession then lead away from the spine only to take your opponent back to the centre square after taking possession or if the ball passes your area

Don't know what it is, but it was implemented (or they tried to) for the last three games.

Against St Kilda they seemed to have a go to the corridor at all costs attitude?

Phase 1.5 is to continue to work on 2 areas:

1) Reducing turnovers

2) Building our tanks

These are the 2 areas that continue to let us down. When we turn the ball over or loose at a stoppage we still do not have the fitness base to run back hard to support our defence. Although we are not down hill skiers like much of the Carltank mod field we still have an amount of work to do on our fitness to ensure we can come back to offer support.

I must say I'm a little bit worried that Hardwick will base his gameplan too much on Hawthorn's old one which has clearly become superseded now. Hopefully he is smart enough to realise this.

It basically needs to be a gameplan that is better than Collingwoods!

Part 2 is possibly the most complex gameplan ever assimilated in the history of the AFL.

.......Instead of playing 1 tall forward, we play 3.

This will transform the entire make-up of the on field gameplan. The defence will not be under consistant pressure because the ball goes inside 50 and straight back out. Instead the ball will go inside 50 and then either a mark or a contested play will occur, resulting in more time for the defenders to correctly align their zone.

We got to see glimpses of this miraculous gameplan this year and saw just how effective it was when only 2 tall forwards were in place.

......But seriously it's all good to talk about complex gameplans but if you can't get the most fundamental principal in AFL coaching right (team selection/structure) then you shouldn't be doing the job. If Hardwick wants to win then he needs to start by selecting at least 2 tall forwards every match regardless of form in comparison to smaller players.

Post and Rance should've played a lot more this year.

The most fundamental thing in coaching is to get the players to play in the way you ask, to follow team rules.

I think you'll find that if you couldn't follow the 20 team rules you were not considered for selection. This would have meant early on that there may have not been a lot of choice in terms of team selection due to this concept being so foreign to a lot of the players.

The one thing that has to be sorted out is the extreme zones we keep stuffing up. The North and Pie games were good examples when the ball was quickly rebounded, because of the players zoning they were in no mans land and goals were all too easily scored. Dunno if they will get rid of it, but the players need to understand their roles better. I hope it will be tactically sorted this pre-season

el tigre lets copy collingwood not. that is be second to the ball but be a top notch tackling side with players with enough pace massively utiliseing the interchange to get numbers to the contest.
they have how many who genuinely go get it most of their contested ball comes from a spillage.
they are not good for the game the way they play and the sooner the interchange is massively reduced the better.

Copying generally doesn't get you the best product. But to improve, you need to be aware of how the current best day teams do it, and then break that down.
Would you be rather with a premiership and having played within the rules (ie interchange) or without a premiership but being able to say "well at least we played footy the way it should"
If you don't like the way they use their interchange, then come up with a way to beat it (without imposing a rule change). With that many interchanges, they should be short on the ground. And then there is the extra distance they have to cover. The thing is, the teams that like to run the ball fast (ie Essendon and Carlton, amongst others), didn't fare so well.
