I thought he was 40-something? I knew those can bongs in high school would do some damage
Little known fact. Ryan Turnbull visited my primary school for a play we did about the AFL GF. It was performed in August 1994 and featured the Eagles and the Kangaroos. Chris Lewis also visited. They beat Geelong soon after.

Is Rehn the only one who's been 50?

Used to see players in the 50s pretty regularly when lists were 52 players. Highest number ever worn by an Eagle was 53 by McIntosh in his rookie season. Spider Burton was allocated 60 but never played for us.

Turnbull still holds the VFL/AFL record for most games in the number 50.

I have always found it interesting that no players request numbers in the 40s 50s or however high they can go. Surely as a player, the thought of becoming the greatest player ever to don the number 62 would be enticing? What is the great appeal with lower numbers anyway? Also like to see numbers used differently when the same player has had them for a long time. Give Deans number to the smallest player we have next year and give Glass number to a mid or forward.

I'd REALLY like to see a move away from the early draft picks automatically getting the low numbers. If you've drafted a young mid with an early pick, and #4 is available, sure give it to the kid and hope he lives up to it, but generally it's great to see young players given slightly higher numbers, with the hope they can make them their own. I know the Eagles, a bit like Carlton, have a tradition of giving the lowest numbers to the predicted stars (usually mids and smalls), but it's a bit lame.

Whilst handing #14 to our first pick seems dull to me, I also don't like it when latter draftees are given really high numbers. This year we have some great mid-range numbers to allocate, and I'd really like to see our first two players drafted given the likes of #23, #28 and #30.

If we take Clem Smith with our second pick (a really good chance) I'd love to see him in #28. Similarly, Pickett could bring some glory back to the #30 guernsey, but sadly I doubt we'll get a chance to draft him.

I reckon those that think Alec Waterman won't end up in his dad's jumper are off the mark. For starters, Karpany is going into his second year, so is pretty much due an upgrade, and you can't imagine he'd be attached to #39. Alec is clearly a fan of that number and would love the honour. Lock it in.

My preference for Karpany's new jumper would be #20 - memories of little Shane Bond.

Waterman's whole story is that he has gotten to where he is on his own merits, not because his dad played for the Eagles during the heyday. He said that people told him he was only doing so well because of his dad and that he wants to make his own path, so I very much doubt he would want his dad's number.

Second-year players who didn't play a game in their first year don't usually get an upgrade.

Yes, we've heard this, but the fact that he has chosen to wear #39 in the past pretty much smashes the theory that he thinks this extends to jumper numbers. Doesn't it?

If it were up to me..

14 - Barrass - why not? It's not a "star's" number really - suits a solid backman
19 - # 51 pick - unless one of Adamson and Brophy really impress
20 - Karpany - possibly a generous upgrade
23 - McLovin' - though there's talk he wants 20
28 - Clem Smith - if we draft him obviously
30 - #11 pick - especially if it's Pickett (unlikely) but even De Goey, Ahern or Duggan could work
39 - Waterman - lock it in

I think the AFL environment where the whole country can see him is vastly different to juniors and state 18's.
Interesting theory. I'd say the opposite. He's decided to wear the number when he's in that environment of trying to prove he's worth drafting and not sub-par, as most sons of former players are. Sure, getting on the Eagles' list wasn't his aim, and he's still got it all to prove, but he'll no longer be playing with kids who are starstruck by the son of an Eagle, baiting him that he'll never make the grade.

Hey, you may be right, but I see a kid who's got a great relationship with his dad, has deliberately chosen to wear #39 in the past, and now has the chance (maybe) to wear that same jumper in blue and gold. Seems a no brainer.

I'm really sick of reading this.

Clem smith would add next to nothing to our team IMO. He's not an AFL standard player and he will struggle.

Geez, strong words. I'm not sure if Smith will struggle culturally/psychologically (I know little about him) but there's a lot to indicate he won't struggle at all with the pace or intensity of the top level. None of these kids are AFL standard yet, but Smith is tough, and that's one of the first non-negotiables of AFL. Fitness is the easiest thing to add to your game.

He'd bring next to nothing to the team? That seems a far stretch. He's really quick and really tough. Pace is certainly the biggest missing ingredient at the Eagles, and attack on the ball probably isn't far down the list either. With Beau no certainty to play, or play often, again, Smith could be exactly what the team needs in the coming years.
