What do you guys think of the new rules being trialled in the Pre season comp?

3 Points for a rushed behind & 9 points for a goal kicked outside 50m Arc. Should make for an interesting Pre Season.

Atleast having Carey in the team gives us another player that can dob one from outside 50 if the rule change is adopted in the next couple of years for the home & away season.

Can't agree with the new rules at all. I would much rather do the pre-season games under normal rules to get the game plan functioning correctly for the season proper, not f**king about under some demented ideas dreamt up by Jackson, Demetriou and crew.

As for orange umpires, yelling out "you cheating jaffa" at them compares poorly with "you cheating white maggot"!!! Besides, I like jaffas!! ;)

Yep, new rules look interesting. I think that they will definitely make a significant difference in the preseason matches. The scoreboard will have to have more columns now, with the added scores, so that will be a definite change there.

We might see a few more of our players practice their long bombs in training. The 9-pointers in my opinion will put a whole new spin on the game. For instance, what would we even call them, coz they can't be called "goals". Maybe something like "bombs", I dunno. I'd think that these bombs would affect tactics, b/c you can choose to take the risk in making a bomb or chip it in to another player inside the 50 but for a lesser score, so there might be more risk involved in the game. Definitely interesting to see for sure.

The 3 points rushed won't make a huge difference I think. Well, at least less difference to the bombs. Its a bit interesting b/c if I remember correctly, its only for a deliberate rush behind that penalises you 3 points. So, if a defender goes to punch the pall away if a kick is aimed close into goal (say 5 m) and its knocked back, then is that a deliberate rush? I mean, I think there's a potential problem as it seems like there's a subjective decision that has to be made, by someone (by the goal ump??), and the problem with subjective opinions/decisions is that there is no identifyable line, and it could cause problems. Also, doesn't it seem possible for a player to "fake" a deliberate rush? So, umps might have to keep this in question too (a bit like the yellow/red cards in soccer -- everyone knows those guys are faking most of the time and deserve Oscars for their performances -- but to the same level of importance of course)

One thing thats for sure: the umps will stand out in bright orange :)

Right now, I'm not really sure if I'd like all these rules incorporated in the game, esp the 3 point rushes, but the bombs I don't mind.

And finally, this is what I reckon the scoreboard at the end of the Wizard clash between us and the Powder will be:

Bombs Goals Rushed Behinds
Crows 7 21 1 6 198
Powder 1 17 4 10 133

Yeah baby!!!! :)

Good point there too. If its a preseason comp, its gotta reflect the actual season, and the new rules don't, so yeah, whats the point there? But then on the other hand, trying out new rules during the preseason is the only way to see how the public responds to the changes, and its only the real way to trial out any rule changes properly. I guess you gotta weigh up the pros and cons, and it seems like they see more pros than cons.

the new rules seem to be a waste of time. what's the point of trialing them in the pre-season cup when most of the rules probably have no chance of being approved for the season proper? the only decent rule is the rushed behind worth 3 pts. should stop the fullbacks from being 'slack' and trying harder in compromising situations.

Agreed. Only rules that would be seriously considered for the real game should be introduced. No carnival rules. The kicking out from a behind straight away is a good thing as well. (I take it this means we don't have to wait for the goal umpire and his stupid flag waving?)

the rule is that the full back can kick out as soon as the behind is signalled, so i guess the game becomes more fast moving this way.

I think they should leave the SCORING alone.
Thats sacrosanct.

You know the deal, if it aint broken...
Totally agree TJ! I mean why doesn't the AFL just introduce a net & cross-bar to give the players some practice for the next International Rules game ... in fact why not start using a round ball too ...
