VAL MIGLIACCIO
April 24, 2008 12:30am
ADELAIDE United chairman Dario Fontanarosa says building a new inner city stadium is not only about boosting Adelaide's chances of hosting proposed World Cup matches in 2018.
Fontanarosa's master plan to construct a purpose built all-seater undercover rectangular stadium is starting to take shape with overseas investors prepared to partly fund the project.
"I feel obligated as chairman of Adelaide United to deliver a worthwhile facility so people in this state don't continually miss out on the best soccer games available in the nation," Fontanarosa said.
Fontanarosa said Football Federation Australia chief executive Ben Buckley had in principle endorsed the master plan.
Fontanarosa said the proposed stadium should be built just for soccer and in five years.
"I don't want Adelaide United to play on a round oval or a running track around it," he said.
"It has to be a purpose-built soccer stadium. They're talking about billions (to build one) which is not true. A FIFA-approved world-class stadium is $10,500 a seat."
Fontanarosa's stadium project has been costed at $475 million for a 45,000 all-seater stadium.
He believes that the continual growth of the game will force Adelaide into moving to a bigger home - away from Hindmarsh Stadium.
"We're aiming at 25,000 to 30,000 crowds for Adelaide United matches," he said.
"Regardless of the World Cup we need a bigger stadium. The fact that we've got the World Cup (bid) now is just a bonus."
Fontanarosa said Adelaide's crowd pulling power when it staged a 25,039 sell-out clash at Adelaide Oval last year was no fluke.
"People love city stadiums," he said. "The ideal location I think is the Thebarton police barracks."
Fontanarosa revealed that United would always lose the rights to hosting A-League Grand Finals purely because of Hindmarsh Stadium.
A Department of Tourism report also revealed that the 2018 World Cup could bring billions of dollars in economic benefits to Australia.
The 2002 FIFA World Cup which was hosted in Japan and Korea generated a staggering $27 billion.

WTF is this new soccer only stadium bullshit. Get your act together south australian footy.

So Adelaide United want the Government to build them a stadium.

Whoop de ____ing do. I want the Government to build me a 100 foot statue made of solid gold and diamonds, what do you think the likelyhood is?
Actually, the SANFL want the government to build them a new stadium if it goes ahead.

Adelaide said it will fund it by itself if it has to.

I don't think we will get the World Cup in 2018 because it would surely have to go back to Europe but we have to put in a strong bid to give us a great chance to win the 2022 World Cup, similar to how Sydney bid for the 1996 Olympics and lost out but then won the 2000 games.

I don't know why people keep putting down this idea. It has to happen for the good of soccer in this state. There is also the chance a rugby team could play out of this stadium or at least we could attract more high profile rugby league and union games to Adelaide.

Melbourne are building a new purpose built stadium just for the Victory and the Storm and they already have two of the best stadia in Australia.

I know it is a lot of money but a stadium takes years to build, start with the planning now and private backers will come. Get Nick Bianco to cancel his sponsorship of the Power and pour his money back into the game he loves ha ha. He said himself the Power sponsorship is only business and soccer is his first love.

When the new TV rights deal for soccer is signed it will be a massive windfall for the game in this country, hopefully the FFA can direct some of this money towards much needed infrastructure, ie. a new soccer specific stadium for a city which has really overachieved given its relative size in both the NSL and the A-League.

Being at both the game vs Sydney at Adelaide Oval and the game vs Binh Duong on Wednesday night I am sure United have the support to consistently draw 25-30,000 ... this new stadium is what many of them are waiting for in order to entice them to attend the games more regularly.

If that was the case, why isn't Hindmarsh constantly sold out for every game?
I could understand if the AUFC had a waiting list like us but they don't.
To blame the stadium or location is a nonsense. So what else could it be?

Pure and simple people's attitude about the game. If we don't get constant full houses at our games and the Power can't even get it half full sometimes then they are *****ing in the wind.

Sydney didn't bid for 96 Olympics. Brisbane was the AOC's candidate for 1992, Melbourne for 1996 and Sydney in 2000. John Coates and other's at the AOC have always said that the 2 previous bids were important to build up contacts and connections in the IOC because Australia didn't have a voting bloc, like the Europeans and Asia do. As all IOC members vote the sucking up to them all is important, but consecutive bidding doesn't always work.

Paris has bid for 1992, 2008, 2012 and have not tried for 2016 which is voted on late next year
Instanbul 04,08,12
Belgrade in 92 and 96
Manchester 96 and 00 (with Birmingham bidding in 92)
Seville 04, 08
Rio 04,08 bidding for 16
Toronto 96, 08 pulled out of 12 after Vancouver won 2010 winter Olympics
see http://www.gamesbids.com/english/archives/past.shtml

FIFA for the 2006, 10 and 14 WC had a 24 man executive committee make the decision on who won the bid. So you don't have to play as big a sucking up game as Australia had to with the IOC members, just a different one. However I have read that for 2018 every member will get a vote, but I haven't found anything on FIFA's website that confirms this. If that's the case then they will vote in blocs. Ie the Asian Football Confederation will get 1 of it's member to be a candidate, ie likely to be a battle between Australia and China. They will then put forward the winner and vote for them in a bloc. If so then anything could happen. FIFA politics is dirtier than IOC politics according to investigatative reporter Andrew Jennings who has looked at corruption in both organisations.

crows 98 on the Port board we have come to the conclusion that the $205mil jump in stadium cost in 9 weeks is either for a roof or Fontanarosa stuffed up his costings in the February story.

Surely Dario Fontanarosa is allowed to speak on what is best for United and the betterment of soccer in South Australia.

I hope they build it. I would much rather any Government money go into a new stadium for soccer than AAMI. The best solution is a multi purpose stadium but I accept that is not going to happen anytime soon.

Good on United for pushing the idea.

How can you say that to blame the stadium or location is a nonsense when that is in fact the entire issue in an Austin Powers style nutshell?

When you ask most people why they don't go to games or more games the answer is that the stadium and the location don't entice them to go.

The club has done its research and is well aware of this and the potential crowds they have if they play their cards right.

I love it how Dario keeps getting shouted down for being the only forward thinking sporting administrator in this state ... how typical.

Why do you go?

If they were true supporters, a stadium location would make no difference. Next time you go to AAMI have a look at the country buss' in the car park and where they come from.
That is a true supporter in my view.

Adelaide United regularly draw 10,000 which is their core supporter base which will go to matches come rain, hail or shine.

The rest of their supporter base they have to build up and cater for and they don't have the luxury of decades of tradition of a successful competition (SANFL, then AFL) to draw on and automatic mass media saturation coverage as the Crows do.

That's why they have to make every post a winner.

Funny listening to 5AA (rare thing). But lots of callers were saying that they the stadium is one of the main reasons they don't go to the football. This was saturday night by the way, Ebert kept on saying 'Nah its all fine, come on down.'

Perhaps we should buy 50 more of those portable grandstands like the one at the clipsal, then we will have an ace stadium in the city.

2 obstacles to a new stadium in the CBD

- Adelaide City Council
- Jim Daly

On a side note, it's interesting to note people comment about Hindmarsh Stadium being 'too far' then want to build a new stadium where Clipsal is located (a similar distance to Hindmarsh Stadium) - wouldn't that also be 'too far'.

I think they are holding back a lot of things. Vili Milistis cant even build a cafe at the bus station.

Ahh but the Clipsal site is right on the edge of the train line.

Easy access, would definately be more people attending then.

But everyone knows that Adelaide United couldnt use a 60k venue, so we would need a rectangular stadium and the 60k one.

And everybody knows that we should build them both next to the Tram line in the South Parklands. The NIMBYs can go ____ themselves.

Jim Daly would have to be one of the most hated people in Adelaide at the moment.

Classic that they have a bloody whinge about the Vic Park Stand and instead they get a temporary stand that takes 11 months to put up/take down. Classic.

I am with Peter Goers, lets change the Clipsal so it goes through North Adelaide.

I wish Adelaide United great success but I really don't think a bigger stadium is the way to go. What they need is financial security and managable growth. A shiny new stadium two or three time the size (and cost) of Hindmarsh will send them broke.
