New Town Mass Killings

Over here now, CNN reporting that the guy has killed his brother somewhere in town then did the school thing because that's where his mother worked. His mother is among the dead.

Terrible. I feel physically unwell.

His brother was being held by authorities as a suspect for the "second killer" theory. He's not dead.

Sources reporting there's no body in Hoboken NJ, which is what I think you're referring to.

His mother & her kindergarten class were among the dead in the elementary school.

What a silly. Public execution is neccessary

Ironically the states stopped public executions because they took on a festival atmosphere.

Rather then a solemn punishment it sort of became a day out for the family some even had carnival rides.

He already turned the gun on himself.
I'm not going to get into my views on gun control, but this is farking tragic, and when mass shootings are becoming a norm of American society, something is seriously wrong with the people, and the law.

I thought he killed his dad in NJ, then went and did the shootings
Apparently his father is alive and being questioned by the FBI. Looks like he didn't kill anyone prior to the school

Jesus. I didn't think he'd killed so many, I was thinking half a dozen. Being a little older now, you see the death of young kids as shocking, it really gets to you. Like Obama said, these children had an entire life to look forward to; things they had a right to experience. It's evil that it can be just taken away.

Better gun control can really reduce the toll in these tragedies and maybe even prevent them.

America will never learn, be assured of that.
It's easy to say that but what's your solution?

Horrendous incident. So many people killed needlessly.

I don't understand why 99.9% of the population need to have guns, especially semi-automatic ones.

Banning guns doesn't reduce the psychopaths out there, But, by hell, it makes killings like this almost impossible to perpetrate.

It's easy to say that but what's your solution?

Yeah I don't pretend to be an expert, but restrictions on high powered, semi automatic and handguns would be a start. The stats they have on guns in the community and gun crime is staggering, it's not a coincidence.

The level of debate in the states when the issue comes up has to be seen to be believed. It makes Gillard v Abbott look like an intellectual heavyweight bout. Not saying there's not people there who want to make a difference. Perhaps a tragedy like this and a newly elected president in his final term could pave the way for something.

I can't see the problem with that. Execution of scum like that should be celebrated.

It's open to various interpretations according to your bias, but the fact is since both the UK and Australia introduced the far tougher gun laws after Dunblane and Port Arthur respectively, neither country has had a mass shooting (except for a couple of family murder-suicides). And both had had a few in the preceeding years.

But that's only a minor point. The US has a totally f*****ed-up attitude towards violence resulting in teenagers carrying guns, the whole violent gang culture ansd so on. Kids in US schools have 'Gunman Drills' - ie what to do if it is reported there is a gunman in the school. I am NOT making that up.

I read and post to a couple of US-based forums and some of the stuff they are posting today is crazy. Serious talk about 'Primary School teachers should be armed!', 'More guns in the community prevent crime', 'I always carry a concealed weapon when I go to the supermarket, and I feel much safer'.

They can't see the fact that it's the prevalance of guns in society that leads to this casual acceptance of violence. And the solution to the violence is therefore to carry more guns!

Really really sad.

They think (No not all) that more guns and more killings will help prevent these needless deaths. Its a really disturbing incident and these poor poor kids and their families. Someone needs to stand up and make a change with gun control but i was watching a documentary not so long ago and that looks like a long long way away.

It's staggering that they still don't seem to understand why these mass shootings continue to happen in the USA. If you told 100 people the general facts of the story, without mentioning where it took place, where do you think every single one of them would guess?

The thing is though, could there be a more perfect time for a president to institute gun reform than at the very start of his second term? Over to you, Mr Obama.

This thread is going to get ugly quick re: gun debate.

Absolutely shocking, i was just heading off to bed when i read this.

What is going on through someones head to take the lives of innocent kids in that fashion. Deranged loser.

I'm over there right now. Piers Morgan went toe-to-toe with a bunch of gun lobby guys. They brought up Australia, and then the gun lobby guys went 'hurr deaths went up.'

Sure they did. But we didn't have 20 kids get blown away.

I get the 'gun control doesn't reduce crime' argument. But it does remove these sorts of incidents - the only similar situation I can remember since is the Monash shootings and IIRC the guy's gun jammed in that situation because he was unfamiliar with it, and then he was restrained.

He did his mum at home. Then drove to the school and executed 20 kids which did nothing to him.

A child of divorce and apparently didn't "play well with others".
