Was a little random but the other week I was in Auckland as my partner was up there for work (and thought why not).

A few really cool day trips out from Auckland if you are interested in flying out to the North Island. Coromandel Peninsula has some real picturesque beaches and coves (and the weather was like fantastic and tropical which surprised me). We went to Hot Water Beach which is like a beach above some kinda volcano (or volcanic activity) and if you dig with a shovel in the sand it fills with natural hotsprings.

If you like Wine and just drinking in general, there is a 45 minute ferry from Auckland you can take to Waiheke Island which was super nice (basically a small island full of rich people and wineries/distilleries/breweries and there is a bus that takes u to most of em).

Otherwise Auckland CBD was pretty much a smaller grungier Sydney (if Sydney fused with Melbourne and was the size of Adelaide).

I wasn't interested as I'm not a LOtR fan, but theres also the Hobbiton not too far away and a bunch of hikes and other geothermal spas and things in Rotorua (which is also not too far away).

I didn't get bored in my 4 days and the differences between Australia (whilst not significant), still made it feel like an overseas getaway.

Was there in November 2024 on a golf trip, Nth & Sth Island.
If you are by chance a golfer throw your clubs in there are some cracking golf courses to play.

Just on Fergburger in Queenstown, the line is forever and in the 7 days we were there we didn't even bother to try getting it.

Wondering if anyone has done Christchurch for 5 days, and what you would do (I'd hire a car)?
i had a couple of days there, but only did places i could walk or easily short bus/uber. if i was gonna get a car i would have looked at what is worth seeing that extra distance out. i did enjoy christchurch

Yeah, I don't think there's enough in Christchurch for the full five days, so I'm keen to get a car and drive around for 2 of those days. Just not really sure where!

Just returned from a visit to Queenstown. It was amazing.

Fergburger.....yeah was ok. Need to eat it straightaway otherwise warm slash cool is no good. The Ferg bakery is devine. Ayrburn woolshed steaks were also yummy.

I myself called them up and ordered, then strolled into the pick up line which was empty and collected.

Has anyone done a cruise there? Was thinking that way we can get a little taste of a lot of places

Hi there

would love to go to NZ one day, half planning at the moment but any fave places, things to see/do and ideas would be great.

My ex wife and I hired a car and travelled all over both islands for a month about 12 years ago. Was ****ing fantastic.

North Island -
Rotorua is really underrated. Great place and lots to do around there eg. white water rafting etc.

Auckland and Hamilton were great spots. Really liked Auckland. Lots of photo opportunities in the top half of the North island around of Bay of Islands etc.

Tumu Tumu Toobing at Waitomo is an absolute must. One of the coolest things i've done.

Napier/Hawkes Bay and Martinborough if you are into wine are a must.

South Island
Just stunning scenery everywhere. Christchurch was great. Queenstown is the most fun place i've been.

Fergburger is worth the hype and the wait. Best burgers I've had.

Fox Glacier very good, Doubtful Sound very good.

Overall there's just so much to see and do you can't fit in all in but I can't wait to go back to NZ. Loved every minute of it.

Just not really sure where!
Akaroa would be my suggestion. Absolutely fantastic drive with stunning views along the way and the town itself is just beautiful.
We have driven both islands several times and I can’t recall too many places we didn’t like.
As for Fergburger we always stay at the Sofitel and nearly always our room overlooks it so do a bit of people watching and the lines are always huge but It’s worth it IMO

Yes played golf in QTown. Very satisfying

Only been the once, and a smnall part of south island, so hardly an expert.
Stratred in Queenstown, night flight in so missed the approach which is apparently pretty amazing. Nice place, expensive though. Don't miss Arrowtwon, better if you have a car (I don't drive) but there's a bus every hour. fergburger was far too busy - in shoulder season.
Did a day trip down to Milford, incredible place, perhaps the "must see" of the little I saw. And some of the other small towns along the way might make better jumping off points.
Weather prevented choppers Fox, but cleared up enough for a stroll round a nearby lake, so all good. Just be careful on the west coast, make sure you have cash, comms can go down (and only road get closed) in heavy rainstorms. A lot say Franz Joef is the better option, can't go wrong at either.
TranzAlipne well worth the trip - one way. People do both ways as a day trip out of Christchurch, which if you don't have time for the erst coast might make sense but otherwise not ideal imo. Greymouth (the other end of the trip) isn't that much itself but place around could be alright. Hokitiki looked a bit tacky by the beach, but might be fun still.
Christchurch is cool and very walkable.

Want to get down to Stewart Island, and obviously spend some time on north island. Might do the latter next March, but don't have long enough off really for more than just Auckland and one other place.
