Heath Shaw - Long term, if Bucks hangs onto it for the remainder of his career.

Or, short term - James Clement. A few years until the youngsters develop and show who will be the best leader of the group.

But long term wise, Heath Shaw has shown he will be a Buckley-like general of the club. Agree?

If Clement is to be our next captain, it should be starting next year, to give him a good 3-4 years in the role. If Buckley decides to remain captain next year, then Clement may have to be passed over for somebody younger like Fraser.

Swan and H Shaw have pedigree, character and ability to be next in line to the throne.

Looking at that this you would wan't to hope that Buckley has another 3-4 years left him. The club would turn into a rabble handing the captaincy from one of the all time greats to one of those incompetent players listed in the poll. The next captain of the Collingwood FC should be Heath Shaw. Give him the job when Buckley finishes, no-one else deserves it.

Spot on i reckon,

short term = James Clement
if Bucks stays on (which i know the talk is he wont) then Heath Shaw looks the good.

Only other one in contention is Josh Fraser

I like the look of Shaw, he allready looks and plays like a leader. I thought they were grooming Fraser once upon a time as the next skipper. How about Didak???

Burns would make a good skipper but he’s too old to start now as it would be a short term decision and a pointless change from Buckley. Clement would be a great choice. However there is not need for a new captain. Buckley will play on t for 1 to 3 years and there is not need for any change. Succession does not require a premature ending to Buckley’s captaincy. Leave it with him until he retires than make the best choice of who is available. Whether Buckley is there or not won’t affect whether someone like Clement is a good captain even if it is only for a year or two.

After Clement there are a few candidates but none are really standouts. I would have said Rocca a fee years back but his form has dropped away and he is a bit older and nearer the end making Clement the preferred choice of his vintage.

Fraser is not strong enough in the contest IMO. Heath is way too young and inexperienced but that may be different in 3 to 5 years time. Swan may be another candidate just on how he plays. I don’t know what his leadership skills are like. He had an off field issue a while back but I can live with that. After these guys I am struggling. One problem we have had over recent years is a lack of natural leaders. There area a few but I’d rather have more.

Didz is my favourite player, but he isnt Captain material. Hes the star player of the team. People can imagine it, the General, who leads the team and keeps everyone going, and you have you're gun who kills it, and thats Didak.
Similiar to early days of;
Brown - Great Captain.
Buckley - Star performer.

I know it is WAY TOOO soon, but I would love to see Heath Shaw captain, if he had played an extra year the way he did this year, and Bucks held on for another year, I believe it would've been worth the risk for the Pies to give it straight to him after Bucks. But yeah, way too early, so it'll be Clement, as Bucks and him groom the next young captain of Collingwood.

We should do another poll - "Who's going to be captain of Collingwood after James Clement?"

Considering that we pretty much know Clement is next, and that he only has 2-3 years tops, that might be the more prudent question.
