after last nights forward line problems, which seem to be a regular occurence, does anyone agree that nick gill when fit could solve this dilemma???

he would certainly straighten us up if think, much in the crash and bash mould of mark stevens and he was a quality player for us, if gilly can play like him i'd be happy.

thoughts...

I didn't think the forward line ws too bad considering the players missing.

We scored 12 goals from 31 entries into F50, so if we apply our usual 50-60 entries we get with our best team then that forward line would be looking at scoring 20+ goals.

true snakebite, i still find scott welsh to be too much of a selfish player at times, needs to learn that he isnt the only forward, there is 5 team mates around..

I like the Mark Stevens analogy with Gill - both untidy but can get the job done in an ungainly fashion...

...hopefully the injury comparisons end ...:(

I hope you are right but its a big step up. Clubs found ways of stoppong Gill in the SANFL last year except for a few brilliant games. If defenders in the SANFL can get on top of him then he will be up against it in the AFL.

As mentioned injuries are the big thing that will stop him.

Did they? How did they manage this? The only way to really stop him is to shut down North's runners which happens too often against the Dogs and Eags. He was rarely fit in the second half of last year which affected his form.. it wasn't a case of defenders getting on top of him.
Did you see the 1st Semi against South? He only had one arm yet won the game for us in the final term with some amazing grabs.
He has been unlucky with injury though, he only got injured this year because he was pushing too hard trying to get his fitness levels up to AFL quality too quickly.

Yep I watched a lot of local football last year. It was all about shutting down his space and crowding him in marking contests. As I said he played some brilliant games but they were few and far between compared to other years. I wouldn't have said he won you the game against South, that game was up with the poorest of games I watched all year. It was really a case of who was the first team not to make a mistake, nothing spectacular.

As you said injury will be his main problem, I just fear perhaps the Crows won't see the best of him. I hope I am wrong.

I'm still struggling to believe we actually spent a draft pick on Gill. Surely we could have spent it more wisely. Gill just simply isnt good enough for AFL football and at his age he is very unlikely to get better.

What is really anoying is we have been down this path before a couple of times with very similar selections in the past and it appears we have learned nothing from those experiences.

We drafted Gill for a very specific reason. We needed a mature, ready-to-go KPP forward to replace Hentschel.

Almost all of us probably would have preferred to see the Crows draft Justin Westhoff over Gill. However, Westhoff is 2-3 years away from being AFL ready, whereas Gill is good to go now (or would be if he weren't injured).

We had already drafted Sellar and Tippett as young, developing KPP forwards anyway, so it's not like we really needed to take a 3rd one in the same draft.

If worst comes to worst, he will only be on our list for one or two years. If he turns out to be a late bloomer then we really haven't lost anything by it. I'd say he was a relatively low-risk draft selection overall.

People in Canberra aren't supposed to think as sensibly as this, Vader!! :D

Surely you cannot be a public servant!! :p

Your point about having banked 2 talls for the future in Sellar and Tippett is very valid, so it made sense to take a punt on Gill. A possible replacement for Hentschel in the short-term, and if he gave more than that, well and good.

The alternative would have been to draft another mid-fielder, but at that level we were most unlikely to find a gem.

Valid points and at the pick we picked him up with, it really is a very low risk selection. If he doesn't even play a game for us, its fair to say that not many players selected with that pick make it.

He was picked for a specific need and with a late pick. Worth a punt even though it looks to be a bad selection at the moment because Gill just can't get on the park. Whether or not he is up to AFL ability wise, no one really knows until he plays a handful of games for us.

:thumbsu: .....season hasn't even started yet ...plenty of time to make assessments once he actually gets on the park

what else does your magic 8 ball tell you?

How wise can you spend pick 64 ? Seriously ?

Why is he unlikely to get better ? He may be busting his guy like never before now that he has an opportunity. An opportunity, a bit of AFL experience adjusting to the tempo, who knows what he could turn out like .... could be anything from a complete bust to a very solid consistent contributor.

As for the Westhoff comment, whoever made it, that guy will take a mountain of work to build his body up to AFL standard, definitely a lot of work there (which translates to bigger risk). I for one, am happy we went with a more mature option over Westhoff, especially that late in the draft.

It's pick 64 so who cares. Just provides depth in the squad and is cover for injuries. Lets hope he isn't injured when someone else get injured:o. Another mature age recruit could've been Podisadly... I doubt he is going to get drafted now though unless he plays a blinder in the VFL.

Given that we needed a mature, "ready-to-go" KPP forward, there were only two real options. Gill & Podsiadly (spelling ?).

Not a lot to decide between the two of them (not that I've seen either play, other than a bit of Gill every now and then late at night on ABC2), Gill probably got the nod as a South Australian.

Gill is Victorian too. :)

But he has been in SA for years now and the club has seen him play a hell of a lot.

If I am not mistaken, Gill is also younger that Podsiadly (??) and is more of a mobile type forward.

Yes true Stiffy.

From what I have seen of Podsiadly on ABC2, Gill is a much better mark and is more mobile but they are on par with their kicking.

He has only been in Adelaide for a couple of years actually, though he has settled in well. He is very mobile and athletic and has one of the best pair of hands i have seen, he can fly over a pack and one grab it.

Yet another pacy forwardline player....DAMNIT CRAIGY SILENCE THE DOUBTERS AND GIVE US SOME EXPLOSIVE MIDFIELDERS!!!

I think the AFC has recruited for team weaknesses in order of priority ....firstly we needed obviously more KPP what with Angwin, Gibson and Watts failures.

We needed to replace an aging ruck division knowing that ruckmen take the longest time to develop.

Within these needs we have added midfielders of quality and inside midfielders at that ....Douglas, Vince, Van Berlo, Porplyzia and Knights.

I agree we need to inject a couple of pacy players ......and Iam sure we'll add one soon but theyre also the easiest to recruit and have up to speed quickly.

But don't believe we can't inject some pace into the midfield ....Burton, mattner, Van Berlo and Douglas will give us the required pace levels with Stiffy and Knights also options .....we're definately not as slow as perceived from last weeks efforts
