I have a feeling come draft day - Collingwood's first pick in the 2008 national draft will be: Nick Heyne - a left-foot half-forward who should develop into a midfielder.

What is eveyone's thoughts on this kid?

If Collingwood can pick up Nick Heyne with its first round pick, and David Zaharakis with its second round pick - I will be very happy.

We could keep our own left footed HFF in didak and draft a full midfielder instead of recruiting one we would have to teach to play mid.

Just my 2 cents

In terms of a full midfielder - i think will miss out on the likes of: Sidebottom, Blease, Hartlett and Ziebell.

Mitch Robinson looks another option...
And i'd stay away from the likes of Yarran, Suban and Hill.

For me Heyne has the tools to work with, and for some reason i think Hine will like him...

6. Carlton - Jack Ziebell
7. Brisbane - Steele Sidebottom

This is from Couch Coach's Consolidated Draft profiles thread

Nick Heyne - (OM) 22 July 1990, 187cm 79kg. VicC/Gippsland Power/Orbost Snowey Rovers

"Alan McConnell: Nic Heyne - Heyne created a number of opportunities to work his way into the game. He used the ball effectively and also created a number of scoring opportunities."

"HFF 07: NICK HEYNE 187cm 79kg UTILITY
Smart forward who posesses an accurate left foot, is not as classy as some, but does the job, does however go missing for some games, but can then pop up with a couple of goals or goal assists to get himself going.
PROS: - Goal kicking, Marking, Left foot, Inside/Out player,
CONS: - Goes missing
PREDICITON: 10 - 30"

"foj1:: 17. Nick Heyne 187cm 79kg Vic Country
Another tallish athletic type who is a very good runner, amasses a high amount of possessions and will be very versatile at the next level. I think he doesn’t always hurt the opposition as much as he could with his disposals and perhaps not quite as classy as Broadbent and Robinson but a high quality athlete who gets a lot of footy both inside and out."

"???: Strongly-built onballer with a raking left-foot who adds an extra dimension in the air."

"ant555: Nick Heyne – 187cm, 79kg – Gippsland Power.
Lovely moving left footer who has done really well this season. Has absolutely dominated some TAC Cup games and had a reasonably good Champ series. Kicks mainly on the left side but can kick on the right pretty well. Is a dangerous forward who can kick goals from all angles and is a very good mark. Reads the clearances well in the middle and can find the ball. Pace is pretty good. Does have a few games where you wonder if he is on the ground at certain stages but then he will have a great quarter out of nowhere. If he can find more consistency in his performance over the whole game he will be a very damaging player.
Prediction – pick 10 to 30."

"1Mitch1: Nick Heyne- Vic country top aged player and AIS graduate- 187 cm and 79 kg. Very similar to Ryan O'keffe. Had an ok national championships in 08 with his best game against Vic Metro kicking 4 goals. Outside type of player with great skills who has patches where he totally domimated play. With Gippsland power in the TAC cup but has had an ordinary season. Still is someone that is highly rated that should go 25 +"

Your reasoning is kinda why I want Robinson (I don't rate Blease though).

Heyne is Lonie-ish...or maybe an inverse Danny Stanley. Smacking left foot, but isn't an inside midfielder. He appears like he will be serviceable, but I dunno what he'll pwn at at AFL level. Late teens.

For me i still think Heyne, but i wouldn't be surprised if Mitch Robinson is the man.

And I'm really sold on David Zaharakis - Would love more info on this kid...

Not bottom-aged, and therefore statistically unlikely to be picked up by Hine. Having said that, I do like him a lot, and wouldn't mind him with #11... particularly not if we showed the faith in him to take him.

If he was Taken at Pick 11 I would say that was a Waste of a 1st Rounder. Reckon we could get him in the 2nd Round

I would be willing to put myself on the line and say that there's no way that Heyne will be available at #29 - He's going higher than that.

Fair Enough - Those I doubt he is worth Pick 11

will zaharaskis (excuse the spelling) be available with our second pick? IMO we need someone who played at the u/18s the same way nathan jones did a few years ago if anyone can remember that. lots of in an under stuff and lots of tackles

Gee he looks like a Collingwood player doesnt he......judging by his disposal. Looks like he throws the ball on the boot a lot, blindly. interesting ball drop. Reminds me of O'Bree quite a bit. looks like a competitor who wins the footy but I would be unhappy if pick 11 isn't someone who can actually use the footy and hit targets. I'm certainly not sold based on that footage.

I am with Vinnie and sampler I wouldn't be dissappointed if we took him at 11. I don't think he will be around at 29 and think he has a stack to work with. I think in a different role under a different coach his got the potential to improve out of sight.

While not a natural inside player some of his work around stoppages to win the ball is really really impressive. His kicking can be so so but again it's more a thought process and trying for to much or just blindly kicking then poor technique. His actually a really good kick. I am not a huge fan of drafting another flank / mid and hoping they become full time mid. I think if we drafted him he'd have to be played in the midfield from day dot in the VFL and not expected to just magically become a midfielder.

If I knew Swift was going to be gone by our second round and it was out of Swift and Heyne I hope we take Swift.

Do not be suprised if Collingwood picks up Matthew De Boer with Pick 11.

Hine liked him a lot last year - and he chose not to nominate. Was rated very highly through the year and has slipped away of late.

No doubt the recruiters have been following his progress.

On Heyne I think that he deffinately has it all there and is the sort of guy who will more then likely be drafted and suprise a lot of people with how well he preforms.

It's all there some of his goals and passes are superb. He moves fantastically. He reads the play around the stoppages very well. He just seems to be coasting. He is certainly very laconic and has the ability to step it up out of no where. If we got him I'd certainly be hoping that the AFL enviornment and given the right role and guidance he'd turn out very well.
