I heard this from a mate who's girlfriend goes to Aberfoyle... so I'd say it's valid. :p

According to hearsay, he's going to the club which will give Port the best deal.

If thats true, he's handled this very well.

If that's true, we could probably re-instate his club stalwart status. Tentative, at the moment, however.

Agreed. He has ****ed a lot of people off, if he does what's right then he may get some respect back.

I don't see why Nick would want to do this, when a player quits like Nick has you would think he would look out for himself most of all and further to this help out his new club as much as possible.

Perhaps Im just out of touch.

If we don't get a good deal, it'll be because of a club playing hardball. It won't have anything to do with Nick. And I doubt at this moment whether we'll get what we've asked for. I doubt if Mark Williams or Alan Stewart expect that. 2 first round picks for 1 player is extremely unlikely, if they settle for an early first round I'll be happy.

There's nothing to be gained from staying mad at Nick, we'd just be like those Collingwood supporters who railed against Nick Davis.

In an environment where offers are being thrown around like pick #6 for Solomon, Nick can definitely garner two first round picks.

Has someone actually offered that? Or did Essendon ask for it, I could understand that. I suppose after the Dockers gave up #1 for Chris Groom and later Trent Croad I shouldn't really be surprised at anything. Or when St Kilda gave us #8 for a player who hadn't even played.

Its a volatile marketplace for that one week a year, thats for sure.

Throw in Nick Smith and you have a deal.

If Richmond seriously offered us pick #6 for Solomon in a straight swap I would be flabbergasted. Solomon is a good player, and the sort of player that Richmond could really use, but he's not worth pick #6.

That being said, I think we'll definitely use him to gain a first round pick. There'll probably be some other jetsam in the deal, but that'll be the core.

As in the case of Nick, it seems to be a buyers market for Dean, so we should do well. I think the important thing to remember about Solomon is that he is one of the few players around with genuine physical presence, and that can't be underestimated. His errors in skills and decision making have let him down this year, but teams will be confident about rectifying that.

This gets more and more interesting as time unfolds. It's like a high stakes game of poker. Melbourne have now thrown #5 on the table, with the possibility of throwing in a player.

If Max is speaking the truth and Nick is happy to go to the club that offers Port the best deal, Carlton are now in a game of brinkmanship to put #2 on the table. Suppose they do, what do Melbourne do? Fold em or hold em? #5 + genuine quality player or #3 + prospective player? They would likely take the pot in that case cos Carlton r struggling to put anything on the table with #2 to up the ante. Unlikely to get another draft pick, it's either Campo or Sporn. Melbourne have better young players (ex SA too) to offer.

And what of Collingwood? By now it's dawned that Scotland + #17 won't even get them to the table.

Essendon? If they get a decent deal for Solomon, will they take a seat?

It's all a lot of fun at the moment, and should play out for a few days into trade week I'd imagine.

That can't be true. He will nominate his preferred club to Port, who'll try and swing a deal. But what if they don't? Go to the next choice? Then the next? The problem is that the club that gets him will probably have to pay nhim the most and give up the most. I'm still worried about the Blues-for-free option.

I don't think that Mark Williams ever expected what he said they wanted. It's an old negotiating tactic. Figure out what you want and ask for more. It gives you room to negotiate so that you get at least close to what you want if not more.

The age mentioned something about the dogs talking to him in case he went in the preseason draft. They have the room if Brown leaves.

If that is the case the only way Carlton would get him is if they ridiculously overpaid him.

Which is funny, because if it was anyone else but Carlton you wouldn't think they'd do it.

I was adamant a couple of days ago that we would not trade two first round draft picks for Stevens.

A couple of things have swung things back so that I have now returned to my perch upon the fence. Firstly, our balanced and young list. If we don't get into the draft until the second round, I don't see that as being a big disadvantage to our long term future. Secondly, Solomon was a core player so I would not be surprised if Sheedy is looking for an established player who can step straight into the side; someone for whom the coaching staff do not have to spend a lot of effort developing.

If we can get a first round pick for Solomon (it'll most likely be top ten) then an offer of a top ten pick with our current pick #13 will be rather appealing, I would think.

I would've thought, based on the $ numbers being thrown around about Solomon that he would get somewhere between #5 - #8. Assuming he goes to Richmond and they cough up #6 for him (and according to reports the Bullies want players not draft picks for Brown), then in the end Port would have #6, #13 and #15 as the result of a trade with Essendon. I still have a suspicion that Port are looking to package a player and a first round pick up for a specific target, or maybe even looking to use a first round pick to stitch up the Motlop deal, so that would work out well.

It'd be around the mark - it depends what Carlton do, but they don't have much to offer once #2 is on the table, and it may be the player Port have targeted in the draft isn't a definite top 5 pick. Depends then what Melbourne want to do ... and if the Bullies suddenly decide to become involved ... they could conceivably offer #4 and a player (especially if their public position on taking a draft pick for Brown changes). Never underestimate the capacity of AFL clubs to undermine each other.

There are so many possibilities at the moment it's too hard to contemplate!

Absolutely!

Good post.

What would u pick if these were the 2 options on the table:
Pick 6+13 from Essendon
Pick 3+20 from Melbourne

What if Melbourne only offered 5+20?

How much r Guerra/Morgan worth - could they be used to get 3 instead of 5 from Melbourne?

I don't see Melbourne relinquishing pick 3. Guerra/Morgan are not worth, on the trade market, much more than a late second round pick. I can't see any club giving up 2 places in the top 5 for that. Although there's a chance that getting a young defender and a player with 65 AFL games may be a better gamble than a high draft pick, there's also the chance that you'd miss a young champ with a slightly later pick. I can't see a recruiting officer or coach taking that chance.
