After every game certain posters come on hear to bash Pearce. Although that has diminished somewhat to his terrific start to the season. And the same old thing towards Suban.

Which posters? Which games? Cite specific examples. These timid broadsides are unbecoming.

Some people can't have it both ways, you can't openly ridicule people for having an opinion on team lineup changes as Andrew99, JP & Clogged have been, and then on the other hand have negative opinions on players elsewhere - whether it be guys in the Peel team or anywhere else or that matter. The holier than thou theme is getting tiring. Disagree with their opinion? Fine, but don't get stroppy when somebody doesn't agree with yours or god forbid, you should think a player should be dropped ever.

Suban played a role yesterday I admit. The question I have on him, apart from the fumbles and holding the ball decisions against are around his role.

1: Would you prefer Mz play the same role?
2: When we play the hawks, yes they have stars but in finals their players stand up in big moments... Do you think Suban at his stage of development will become one of these players?

When I ask those questions of Suban - I think of him as depth not first 22. Do I cheer for him and hope he does well? Heck yes! Do I think the team could be improved with Mz in his position? Yes.

The holier than thou attitude comes from the highest authority RTB. Hes picking Suban in the 22 and personally I think Suban is doing ok. 8 tackles game high, hes doing stuff.

I want Gu in the team though. Who makes way?

You could ask the same question about a lot of guys in the team. Simple fact is, whether we like it or not, Ross picks the team that he thinks will beat the opposition and so far he has been right.

Yeah but there was a long running "Brett Peake slips over count" on this board, and there was much mirth when St Kilda traded for him and he played every game under RTB there, even their grand final(s). The second of which he slipped over in.

no doubt... but this is a thread about Suban. So given the question about Suban what would your answer be?

As Mz plays a similar role to Suban I would have thought the questions lead to a healthy discussion. I quite like that Ross picks the team, this is a discussion board isn't it? Personally I would hope that Mz comes in for Suban. Upgrade in almost every facet of the game.

I don't think that is an upgrade the way Suban is playing at the moment. Selection is going to be difficult because Ross got his role players in the team round one and they will stay there unless they stuff up big time (unless you are a couple of unmentionables). Gu may come in for Crozier who basically hasn't played a game in the past three weeks . When Balla comes back, it gets interesting unless there is injury.

Suban was better yesterday. Did some good clearance work and spent more time in there than usual. Kicked a ball 40m+ on his right even if it was a hack and hope forward out of a clearance, it resulted in a goal.

However, I still think he should make way for Mzungu. His lack of pace was exposed a couple of times chasing (or failing to) Eagles players. Would prefer MDB as sub.

I think you may have missed the point of my post though - whilst he's in the team and playing a role - the right to discussion about whether he could possibly make way based on his track record and what he brings to the side (.. or doesn't) doesn't warrant ridicule, particularly from those that hypocritically like to dish it elsewhere regarding other players they themselves ironically don't rate.

Who he makes way for is another discussion for another thread, incidentally that's created every sunday night.

Oh yeah I agree with you on that point. Players in the bottom 4-6 are always going to cause debate not just here but at the selection table id imagine. And rightly so.

I think Gu is a clear upgrade on the way suban is playing at the moment. Better runner. Better in close. Better mark. More versatile. Better over the 4 quarters. Where on current form do you have suban equal or ahead?

He did what he was asked to do by Ross very successfully two weeks in a row. Stopped Stevie J and Selwood and kept Shuey out of the game while getting a fair bit of the ball himself yesterday. Gu should be in the team, but the way Ross has set it up there isn'r a spot unless he replaces Crozier or he drops one of his role players who have all done their job very well.

Another holding the ball from his own lack of awareness, when will he learn?

As to the people here talking about D.Pearce, he has always been solid. The problem is that certain players are never rested and he is one that needs at least 1 game off to be at optimum performance come finals. I'm hoping with out depth this year some of regular 22 gets time off.

I think the rest of players is crucial as long as Freo is in the position to. Pearce needed in the last 2 years. It has it's advantages.

I think over the course of the season Suban will be under pressure from Mzungu to retain his place in the 22. Mz is capable of playing the same role and is more versatile than Suban, as well as being more of a scoreboard threat.

Crozier will make way for Ballantyne after suspension. With a full list to choose from I can see MdB, Suban and Crozier battling for the sub role, depending on the opponent. It's academic anyway as there will always be injuries and suspensions.

One thing is for sure, you wouldn't want to be a Freo player on the outskirts of the 22 trying to force your way in. Competition for spots is fierce but will make us stronger all round. Suban can help his own cause by chipping in with the odd goal, which is a fair expectation for his allocated role in the team.

For now, he has the benefit of incumbency but it is largely on his own left boot.

It appeared that Suban had a variety of roles on Sunday. In the first quarter when the midfield groups went head to head (thanks Coach Simpson!) Nick was basically our safety net. His primary objective was to stay out of the way and let Fyfe, Mundy, Neale and Hill monster WCE. On the odd occasion things went a little pear shaped he got involved winning a couple of clearances but more importantly making some lock down tackles to prevent WCE from winning a clean clearance.
In the second and third quarters he moved to a more shut down role, first on Shuey and then on Priddis. These two play very different games and suggests that Ross is trying to educate Suban as a defensive midfielder. Given his well discussed limitations this may prove a good role for him.
This leads me to think he will play more often that not for two reasons. Firstly, while Ross may have moved on from a Crowley type tagger I doubt he has given up completely on a defensive midfielder. Secondly, competition for this spot may not be that fierce - who other then Suban, Clancee and De Boer are the options?
