It’s not that people are boring, it’s that people want a name they can identify with by representing the uniqueness of their community and its heritage. Love it or hate it, there’s not a nickname out there that can do this more effectively than the Devils.

I agree, it will be Devils.
I also disagree, cliches are very boring.

The Waratah is the floral emblem of NSW.
Tassie deserve to have a moniker that represents them and the Devils is the best one.

The waratah features on the arms of Hobart. It doesn't not represent Tasmanians.

I used to feel the same because it's the obvious option, but really it's a great name imo, and Tassie Devils are awesome and unique animals.

They'll come up with an awesome logo for sure.

But because it is so tied in with NSW it doesn't make sense for it to be the team name for Tasmania. Especially since Hobart doesn't represent the whole state. People from Launceston aren't going to get behind something from the Hobart coat of arms. They have to have something that represents tassie as a whole because the North vs. South rivalry is a real thing.

And how many Tasmanians feel connection with a Waratah? The floral emblem of Tassie is the Tasmanian Blue Gum.

It’s not about what we’re “fed”, it’s about what Tasmanians actually want. In 2018, the team name of all state representative football teams went to a public vote that was run by the Mercury and AFL Tas. As you can see, the ‘Devils’ won the vote by a ridiculous margin. The former name of the state U18 team ‘Mariners’ was a distant second place. You and other mainlanders might consider it cliche but we won’t be losing any sleep over it.

The problem with Thylacines is that its not actually alliterate as the phonyms of the 'T's are different, and it's a mouthful to say. There's a reason why all AFL clubs have mascots that are 2 syllables or less. The only exception is 'Kangaroos' which gets shortened to Roos or Kangas in practice. You can't do that to Thylacines. Thighs? Lacines? Thylacs? In short its an awkward work around of the much stronger 'Tigers'.
