No takers for VFL

So poor was some of his players’ performance in round 12, Richmond coach Danny Frawley said he expected some of them volunteer to play in the VFL during the bye round.
There were no takers on Monday morning, when the team met for the first time since a seven point loss to Carlton, but assistant coach Darren Crocker says some demotions are likely to happen anyway.
The Tigers have much to contemplate over the mid-season break after squandering a 6-2 win-loss tally over the last month, to enter the season’s halfway mark at a mediocre 6-6.
Crocker wasn’t aware of any player offering to play for VFL side Coburg this weekend, but said Frawley would be expecting that by the end of the day.
“This is the first time we’ve come together since Saturday afternoon. I imagine he’d (Frawley) probably be expecting that throughout the course of today,” Crocker told afl.com.au on Monday morning.
“I think some of the guys would be concerned with their own form and that they’re certainly not playing to the expectations they set for themselves, and that also we set on them. I’d imagine that they’d want to be going back and trying to regain a little bit of confidence and a little bit of touch at VFL level.”
And failing any volunteers from the playing group, Crocker said the Richmond match committee would insist some of its men sacrifice their one scheduled weekend off during the home-and-away season.
“We’ll be having a look at it as a match committee and seeing who could benefit confidence-wise, and also conditioning-wise because we have had a few injuries and guys who are a little bit underdone,” he said.
Crocker said the club expects talented midfielder Kane Johnson and clubs skipper Wayne Campbell to return to the side immediately after the break, after both have been sidelined with calf complaints.
Campbell hasn’t played since round nine, when the club’s month-long losing streak was begun by the West Coast Eagles in Perth. Former Crow Johnson was a late withdrawal before Richmond was beaten by seven points to Carlton last Saturday.
Meanwhile, experienced Tiger Duncan Kellaway will visit a foot surgeon on Monday and have scans on the foot he injured in the round 12 game. The club believes the complaint will sideline him for at least a fortnight.
“It’s going to be a few weeks, but we’re hoping it won’t be any worse than a few weeks,” Crocker said.
Key position player Ben Holland is also expected to play his first senior game since round four 2002, when the Tigers take on Brisbane in a fortnight. Holland has completed his recovery from a knee reconstruction in the VFL in the last few weeks.
“He played well in the VFL on Sunday, and the VFL plays again next weekend and he’ll get another game under his belt and be in consideration for Brisbane,” Crocker said.
