Don Pyke might be a good consolation prize. Coaching record 56 wins, 1 draw, 36 losses. And they lost their B&F and best player immediately before he took over (Dangerfield)

I can’t wait to see Norths first pre-season camp under Pyke

Took over Melbourne when they literally couldn't get any worse (for a handy salary paid by the AFL mind you). All he had to do was not be Mark Neeld and they were going to improve. He did just that, and for some reason he's credited for doing the heavy lifting for their flag.
Actually Roos salary was paid by the Melbourne Football Club. We received 2.7 million when Roos was appointed, which helped land him obviously, but also helped us pay Neeld out. And our fine for tanking. All clubs receive cash from the AFL though.

He had basically two jobs at Melbourne, make us better and choose our next coach. We got better and the coach he picked led us to premiership glory for the first time in 57 years. He's a bloody legend.

If players can get intrinsically motivated by Stuart Dew's holistic and mindfulness practices, I don't see what North players are complaining about.

David Noble isn't the problem--the players are!

Pyke joined the crows in 2015, Dangerfield left at the end of 2016, so he had 2 years with Dangerfield in the team.

It's not a bad shout.

He won 1 flag very narrowly with the Swans, took over Melbourne when they literally couldn't get any worse (for a handy salary paid by the AFL mind you). All he had to do was not be Mark Neeld and they were going to improve. He did just that, and for some reason he's credited for doing the heavy lifting for their flag.

He also keeps saying he's done with footy but taking non-committal roles that no doubt pay a fortune. Eg a 3-year Melbourne role, a North role from Hawaii.

Hopefully he can stop taking the piss out of vulnerable clubs now.
People are absolutely overlooking his strengths as a coach. He is a defensive first coach and was absolutely critical in stopping us getting scored against like we were. Can you seriously blame Melbourne for appointing a premiership coach? Sydney’s style for so long was built on a great defensive approach. Ross Lyon adopted it at the saints and Fremantle and took them to three grand finals.

However, if he is doing his job from Hawaii then that is a bit rich given North Melbourne’s woes.

North were always going to be criticised by many here no matter what they did.

Dammed if they did, Dammed if they didn't.

And you can guarantee the exact same posters who are posting "it's not the coach, it's the list" would have been on here next weekend posting about how untenable Noble's role is if we didn't sack him lol

As a Carlton supporter, you’d have been crying out for Paul Roos after you sacked Ratten. Instead you went the big name and picked MM. Our timeline coincides with yours. Go back to say, 2005. In 2013 we sack Neeld and employ Roos. When did you sack Ratten? Since then we gradually lifted whilst you didn’t.

It’s astonishingly naive from you to make those comments re Roos.

He might be a great coach or a terrible coach, you could never tell with the list.
no you can tell he was terrible

hes a footy gm that pretended to be a coach

there was no system, he refused to play a second key forward also which ruined our structures

If Pyke is smart, he'll stay where he is and enjoy the ride.

Taking on North with their poor list and problems off field will leave who ever takes the coaching job with very disturbed sleep patterns. Pyke left Adelaide Crows because it was becoming a shambles and it was killing him, still is a shambles!

As an outsider, it seemed Noble didn't have super list to work with....but it's also not a "1 win and % of 50" list either.

It doesn't need to be an Either/Or scenario....North can have 'bigger picture' issues but Noble could still have been a poor coach who didn't get the best out of what he had.

Pretty standard commentry in here. The "North need to do this (North does it), why did North do this?" is strong.

Feel for Nobes. Realistically we weren't going forward with him, he didn't have the players. I wonder if there is a LeBron effect with JHF and he had said " It's Noble or me"?

Anyway Patch gets a third of a season to show what he has, knowing he has zero chance at the gig. I hope Nobes finds something pretty quick. He would be a valuable asset
This is an interesting take. A kid thats played 12 games surely has no influence over club decisions?

Sad to see David Noble go, hopefully the Pies can find him something, if he wants to come over we have his fine son, I think he would be invaluable, let's face it, those blokes at North are very immature

Nowhere did I say it was a bad appointment. He just didn't move the mountains like some make out imo. He took you from what, 17th to 13th to 9th? Pretty standard for a rebuilding club (who had already been rebuilding for a few years), no?

He had basically two jobs at Melbourne, make us better and choose our next coach. We got better and the coach he picked led us to premiership glory for the first time in 57 years. He's a bloody legend.

He could not have made you any worse, as I said all he had to do was not be Mark Neeld and you were going to improve. He was 1 of 3 people to help choose the next coach (Viney & Jackson the other 2). Once again, not a bad impact on the club but an overrated one.

How are they remotely similar? After we sacked Ratten we had narrowly missed the finals and finished 5th the year before. When you hired Paul Roos you were rock bottom.

Btw, I reckon if Carlton signed Roos it probably would've been the same outcome - overrate our list, implement a defensive gameplan that didn't suit the players, trade out a few and not play finals. Maybe he wouldn't have turned us into the worst and oldest list in the comp, but we wouldn't have had success imo.

Noble is the scapegoat, they simply don't have the players. Where are they going to find someone with his experience? He was in charge of a team that is on a par with Fitzroy of 1996 and Melbourne of 2012/13. You have to have the players in this business, it's a brutal industry, totally results driven. If you don't win...you will LOSE everything!
