Modra deserved a flag
Coleman medallist/All Australian in a premiership year

Mind you... Ellen & D Jars did okay at full forward in his absence

That’s the reality, someone has to have a flag removed from them. And in the case of someone like Nick Riewoldt or Pav an entire team will have to have not won a flag. Which one did they deserve, who’s losing theirs?

Do we think we're a chance at getting anyone in a Melbourne fire sale? I know their board of directors think they're challenging next year but realistically does anyone else think that? Would any incoming coach think that? Everything about them says rebuild.

The biggest travesty was Brisbane being made to travel in 2004 for the preliminary final, when they'd earned a home final.

Won through but were out of steam by the GF.

Leigh Matthews absolutely teed off on Andrew Demetriou during the presentation. The rules got changed soon after.

That's one flag that went to the wrong team. Would have been Brisbane's 4th so most of their guys had already filled their boots though

Not convinced Port wouldn’t have won that GF anyway. Brisbane were flying low and on IV drips during those flights.

Bit of a nothing article.

Main points are there are almost no players on the list that would satisfy Saints needs. Saints will fight to get fair compensation. The power have a shit draft hand that won't get it done, unless they trade Butters.

John Ralph

But if he does request a trade, prepare for the gloves to come off. Prepare for the most complicated, nastiest, most drawn-out trade discussion we have seen in some time.
Because there is not a club in the AFL St Kilda would least like to trade a star player to than Port Adelaide.
They don’t have good draft picks, they don’t have a star keen to come home in a straight swap, they don’t have much of anything St Kilda would want.
and

Power boss Chris Davies made a good fist on Sunday of suggesting the Power could find an equitable deal if ‘Nas’ arrived given the club still has 2026 and 2027 first-round picks.
But consider everything you know about the street-fighting instincts of Ross Lyon, Stephen Silvagni and Graeme Allen then realise how hard they would fight for fair compensation.

and (interesting Butters isn't on the list)

Port have the untouchables – Connor Rozee, Miles Bergman, Jason Horne-Francis and Mitch Georgiades – who aren’t leaving under any circumstances.
They have the ageing veterans who are no good to St Kilda – Travis Boak, Ryan Burton, Willie Rioli, Ollie Wines, Jeremy Finlayson, Rory Atkins, Ivan Soldo.
They have the experienced types the Saints don’t need – Aliir Aliir, Brandon Zerk-Thatcher, Jordon Sweet, Sam Powell-Pepper (coming off a second ACL), Esava Ratugolea.

Here we go
The club’s 2026 free agent Zak Butters has so far committed to seeing out his contract before he hits free agency and if he does leave Geelong and the Western Bulldogs would be much further ahead in the queue than St Kilda.

Well the fact Port said straight up its 2 first rounders are on the table suggests perhaps list management at Port is a C gets the degree style pass. I get the want to fill the side with missing pieces. All premierships have an element of traded in talent but traded in talent shouldnt replace the entire building of a list. Ultimately you have to give up too much at the front end of the draft which costs at the back end. JL should feel ****ing atrocious about his decision because not only has he failed to deliver but he cost Port a decent pick. Collingwood just learned this lesson with Houston. Paying for talent is risky if they dont deliver.

Huge news, hopefully Freo or Hawthorn can beat them to guarantee us top two
Or we just win the next three.

If we can't beat Collingwood at home, no point getting excited about Finals.

….”its coming back!!!” How beautiful are those words 😆
Such a bullshit kick. He made an absolute meal of it and somehow it righted itself and drifted back like it was meant to be. Not a soul in Adelaide Oval thought it was going through in the first .5 seconds after it left the boot. None of Dawson's kicks had ever gone right to left before, and none have since. Even watching it again now it never looks like it has enough time to break back. Must've snuck through by millimetres.

What an amazing moment. Made up for the Monfries bounce imo.

I don't think I'd personally read too much into it. Seems their CEO, Matthew Richardson made a similar comment today.

The question they are both being asked is "could you, or how would you get a trade done (if NWM requests a trade to port)?" All both have essentially said is that they believe if that were to happen, they believe that they'd be able to get a deal done. And that those picks could or would most probably play some part of any deals if NWM does in fact request to be traded there

They are in essence just responding to questions around earlier media noise that they can't or couldn't get a deal done

There is absolutely no way in the world either would reply with a "yeah, NWM is going to be valued far too much for us to get a deal done". Can you imagine the outrage?

JL has missed most of the season with a fractured knee cap. I think it's probably a little too early to call him a bust

I don't think Houston is a bust yet either

On another note, I wonder with the gift of hindsight whether Ben Williams & NWM would've been better off around the mid season bye just saying "we're putting off contract talks until the end of the season"?

Nah Houston was always a downhill skiir and was always exposed in tough games. He just is a player who looks good when the pressure is off because he can run and kick long range goals. Actually I think Collingwood probably did pay a fair price. Port were just upset they couldnt con more.

As for Port, they can get NWM I have no doubt they can do a deal. But the question is should they? Ports need to rebuild that list and an upcoming compromised draft will make it telling.

Ridiculous comment.

So I guess absolutely no one should be excited about finals then. Geelong lost to GWS 3 weeks ago (their last game against a top 8 side), Collingwood lost last week against Brisbane and Brisbane lost to Suns 2 weeks ago.

Losses happen to good teams all the time. It's sport. Doesn't mean the team can't win it all.

I don't think Collingwood are really using or playing Houston to his strengths. Doubt he was ever a great 1v1 defender

NWM looks a special talent. My take is if they lose Butters to land him, it's been a zero sum game. On the other hand, if Butters was going home anyway they might as well bite the bullet.

Collingwood are in poor form, we just beat a pretty decent side in Hawthorn.

Yes, top teams lose to each other. But Collingwood are on the ropes.

We should beat them.

Trading Butters to get the picks is the smart way to approach this. If they dont and they trade those first picks and Butters leaves for compensation pick which would be a priority level pick, they still essentially lost an extra first rounder. for a nett zero gain. My take would be sell butters this year, dont go for NWM and try and take into this years draft 2 or 3 first rounders. and bank first rounders for next year. Get as many as possible.

We also have to think its likely NWM wont be their only target.

Can be a wake up call to players. So a loss can be a good thing if the response is correct. Also there has to be a loser. So if its a 4qtr fantastic performance that goes down to the wire that we only lose by a few points, thats not the end of the world. It would be a great game to prep for finals.

Butters will be a RFA (restricted) if he chooses to explore free agency next year

It'll finish up being a trade if he definitely wants out

It’s a scalp we probably need to take.

I’m concerned that the run home has flattered us a bit. It’s not been easy, but the home ground advantage has given a leg up.

Feels like we’ve treated them as mini finals, we have a point to prove, the group is breaking new ground.

But it’s laughable that we’re flag favourites over the last 3 premiers that have been there and done that.

Well if Collingwood do lose to Hawks this week, top 2 for us is then just about guaranteed.

Assumes we defeat West Coast and Roos as one expects to do and our game with Collingwood is irrelevant due to % difference between us and Collingwood.
