"Fortunately we've got an easy one this week against the Bombers." - Jase Burgoyne, probably
“We haven’t looked too far ahead, but we know we’ve got 3 more easy ones to come.”

North will beat some good sides this year. They are ready to take the next step to be in that 10-12 mark. I don't see the Crows beating them. Essendon won't be able to put the same pressure on Port around the ground so Port v Ess should be an even match.

You don't see the Crows beating North?

Wow!

I can't see their defence holding our forward line.

If you can’t see us beating North, who can you see us beating?

We're happier to play a shootout against teams that do their own thing. We don't like playing teams that negate or just play dour gritty football which is what Clarkson is trying to develop at North. I'll put West Coast in Perth as a danger game too. Of teams I predict will be sitting around us at the end of the season we'll probably beat Carlton.

They were as disinterested as you will see them this year. Ignore everything from round 1.
Interested rd 0 disinterested rd1, you’re taking the piss yeah?

There is a renewed push by clubs and media to have the 50m penalty shortened to 25m in light of it being viewed too much of a penalty. This is a result of the collingwood 50m that resulted in a goal at a crucial time in the match.

My thoughts.

Absolutely 1000% at no stage should the 50m penalty be reduced to 25m

Why?

The 50m penalty was brought in because teams were abusing the 25m penalty to slow down play. It is a certainty that the minute the AFL does this, every club will instruct their players to give away 25m penalties in their back half
by refusing to stand on the mark and this way play is slowed down just enough so players can set up their structures.

Keep it the way it is. The fact they are complaining is a giveaway its a correct punishment

I dont mind a 25m penalty for minor infringements, 50m should be for the behind the play hits, non-football acts.

You dont think coaches will abuse it? its not even a question, its a certainty. Id even suggest that Collingwood were calling the bluff and i genuinely dont think they thought the AFL would call it. You can see that as soon as Tex got the ball they all dropped their eyes and sprinted immediately, not a single player stood their to absorb what even was happening. Thats instruction.

They were in the 3m arc of the player which means a player had to stand. They bolted under instruction to try and get out of that area. thats 100% deliberate and you dont think they wont do that 100x over if the penalty is dropped?

Depends where said penalty is I reckon.

I always like how it’s binary with decisions like thus. 50m too much now, go back to 25? But 25m not enough as opens up opportunity for abuse. Gee, tough decision. Why do we limit ourselves to only the 2 options? There’s plenty of middle ground opportunities between 25m and 50m. 35m sounds about right to me if 50 is too much and 25 not enough.

its a fair point. might be viewed as easy to measure quickly hence why 50m for example is used. Maybe 40m is the right number. Hard not to think though that teams will still complain. its an advantage penalty and if the AFL caves and reduces and it still results in a goal they will argue its still unfair.

Carr is auditioning players for next season. With Tasmania coming into the draft at the end of next year Port need to really get rid of as much dead wood as they can and hit the draft hard.

But honestly though, how many sides can we say Port are truly better than.

I put them on par with West Coast, Essendon and Richmond. Both WCE and Richmond have superior talent pools but Port have one of the best midfields in the comp and then the worst talent pool overall. So I can genuinely see them around that 13th to 17th bracket of teams.

They will play the odd grandfinal style 'do it for the kipper and the fans' type performance probably net them a few extra games. 8 games is the most likely max they will win and thats being generous.
bottom 4- 6 list imo heavily reliant on the big 5. with butters and bergman going they are in for a world of pain considering the new harsher rules to get fs/academy players. finals at least 5 years off

Huh? It was a 15 m penalty, not 25 m.
The SANFL introduced a 25 m penalty for lesser infringements, while retaining the 50 m penalty.
Seems to have worked pretty well for years now.

The 50 was never intended to be for minor technical violations, it's absolutely one of the worst parts of modern footy.
