What are the rules? Explain why there’s an inconsistency.
Pickett born in SA played his junior footy in WA, eligible for WA.
Will Ashcroft born in QLD played his junior footy in VIC not eligible for VIC.

Melbourne star Kysaiah Pickett has been granted permission by the AFL to represent Western Australia in February's State of Origin game, despite the decision going against the eligibility parameters established only a few months ago.

The AFL's criteria states that eligibility is determined by the junior club the player was drafted from.

Take Port Adelaide star midfielder Zak Butters as an example. He was drafted out of the Western Jets in Melbourne and therefore will line up for Victoria.

Pickett meanwhile was drafted out of the Woodville West Torrens in South Australia, despite being raised predominantly in Quairading, Western Australia.

Mitchell White says hello.

How about the AFL just ask players which state they consider their home state.

Because they’d be waiting for weeks on a decision from someone like Tippett

Ashcroft lived in Vic for a total of 3.5 years. My guess is Pickett lived in wa longer before coming back to sa. But I'd also say there is no chance Ashcroft considers himself Victorian he just wanted to play in a winning team. I'm glad the AFL refused it. It was bullshit and he got called out. At the same time though Pickett is SA and should be playing.

They stuff everything up. Dillon was quoted in August saying that it will be determined by ‘where you spent the most substantial part of your teenage years’. Based on the article, I’d say it has more to do with his cultural link to WA and less about evening up the sides. I understand him requesting special treatment, I don’t understand the AFL providing it.

Its a complete basket case.

There is one simple way of making the criteria fair for everybody and Its which state you spent the most time living in prior to your 18th year. In this case I think Picket Qualifies even though he was born in SA he spent a fair bit of time in WA. Where I think people are getting upset is Vic tried to get Ashcroft into the squad using the same arguments of spending time at a junior club in Victoria.

But here is the difference. Pickett identifies himself as Indigenous from his mothers heritage which is based in WA and he spent quite a few years there. Ashcroft moved to Vic for his dads work when he was 13 I think from QLD and e moved back to QLD just 4 years later. It is a complete insult to anyones intelligence that as he claimed he sees himself as victorian. Thats bullshit everyday of the week and he deserves to be ridiculed. He got refused because he just wanted to play with his victorian mates. Got called out for the bullshit he tried peddling and frankly I think the AfL need to tear him a ****ing new one for even wasting their time.

But based on Dillons own words, that would qualify Ashcroft as he spent most of his pre-draft teenage years in Victoria. Not sure how that’s wasting their time, it’s pretty much the literal definition of what Dillon said.

Did he say outright that no matter what, criteria is 100% based on where they played their upper jnr level footy? or was it used in more of tone that if it was 50% eligibility would be based on where they got drafted from.

Got to remember Ashcroft sought an exemption. So the rules were not in his favour. He tried to use the grey area rulings to help get it across the line. But again, he isnt victorian, there is literally no chance he considers himself victorian, so he is lying and the AFL put a stop to it. My gut feel is his brother qualifies for Victoria so they were going to try and get the brothers across the line.

“Most substantial part of your teenage years”. I added pre-draft because it’s logical that once you’re in the system, the qualification period is over.

I wonder if he done that to try and make the sides more even. A blowout by 100 points in a training drill game doesn't bode well for the future of SOO

They would have known that going in. I reckon it’s more to do with him being indigenous and wanting to represent the state where his traditional connection is. As an organisation, the AFL isn’t equipped to deny a request like that.

That would be a likely reason that Ashcroft would have been denied though. They’re just a terribly run rabble.

There's a reason SOO has been not played for so long.

No one cares about it!

But why not have the 2 clubs from SA play against the QLD and NSW and WA teams. Just a nice little round robin lightning premiership pre season set of matches. Say 2 half's of 15 minutes each way.

The Victorian teams can GAGF

My idea for State of Origin is that there are two divisions with promotion and relegation

And the games get spread out enormously so that a player may only get a couple of opportunities during their career peak period to represent their state

Div 1 - Vic, WA, SA
Div 2 - NSW (+ ACT), Qld (+ NT), Tas

At the end of the round robin period the winner of Div 2 replaces the bottom ranked team of Div 1.

Matches played at a proper time - May or June
Payment to players with bonus to Division winners
Payment to their AFL clubs

2026
Div 1 - Vic vs WA
Div 2 - NSW vs Qld

2028
Div 1 - WA vs SA
Div 2 - Qld vs Tas

2030
Div 1 - SA vs Vic
Div 2 - Tas vs NSW

2032
Start again

S.O.O. Player Eligibility Rules according to Carl

Where you live ages 0-18, with weighting for key development years

0-6 years of age - worth 1 point per year
7-12 years of age - worth 2 points per year
13-18 years of age - worth 3 points per year

Feelings = Zero points
No exemptions under any circumstances

People saying they don't care about SOO, it's probably not even really aimed at you. It's a 'Major event' the WA government are putting on for tourism. Funnily enough it's a bit like the WWE event they put on over there.

I doubt they'll get great tv numbers, but it's probably not really why they are having it.

Nah, stuff the others, the whole thing died partially because they thought they had to give players from non-traditional states a chance. If you still need to do that, just keep the divisions separate.
