During the off-season I was bored and made a team from the 2007 national draft. Is there a better single year team than this?

Backs: Harry Taylor Robbie Tarrant Cale Morton
Half Backs: Alex Rance Cale Hooker Andy Otten
Centre: Chris Mayne Patrick Dangerfield Scott Selwood
Half Forward: Brad Ebert Taylor Walker Jack Steven
Forward: Ben McEvoy Fraser Gehrig Cyril Rioli

Ruck: Matthew Kreuzer Trent Cotchin Callan Ward

Interchange: Scott Thompson(NM) Easton Wood David Armfield Chris Masten Stuart Dew

Emergencies: Rhys Palmer Ed Curnow (Rookie) Matthew Lobbe Levi Greenwood
Jarrad Grant Lachlan Henderson Jack Grimes

Its a bit odd have Gehrig and Dew in this team but both were drafted in that year! Gehrig played only a few games after being redrafted but is picked on his total career. Dew, on the other hand, played two seasons for Hawthorn with a starring role in the 2008 Grand Final
2001 is easily the Best

D.Hale G.Ablett Jnr D.Swan

Pound for pound Butts is the better footballer. I think Murray stood out because he is strong and could hold his own in 1:1. I would go out of my way to keep all our talls to be honest Borlase can go but Keane, Butts and Murray need to stay. Giving an established player away in a key position would be absurd unless we get something really good back. If Butts walks...sadly nothing we can do.
I think Butts is the better lock down defender. Murray is better offensively. He's more dynamic, a better kick, better mark and just generally more athletic. He's also way more of a Jekyll and Hyde type. The ACL was unfortunate because he lost that continuity and has been a bit up and down ever since.

With Keane, Murray and Butts I think the best combo is Butts and Keane. Throw in Murray’s injury history (Keane’s freak ankle injury aside) Murray should have been the one we should have traded if it netted us a first round pick.

Hindsight says it was good we didn’t trade any and I’d be wanting to see how Keane returns before we look at trading.

But Sanders for Butts with a later pick would have been smart move for both clubs but glad it didn’t come off now.

The whole if we lose Butters it will give us draft capital for Cochrane hopium is amazing.

Cochrane could be anything, if they're lucky he might be as good as Butters
I think Cochrane is a KPF most likely at AFL though he has also looked good down back as well. Given the quality of their talls he's certainly a big need for them into the future. Whitlock looks OK but they're pretty thin for quality talls.

People concertrate a lot on their good players but if you go into games with all of Jones, Evans, Berry, Mackinlay, Wehr, Richards, Lord, Durdin and Watkins in your 23, you're always gettable.

Essendon were terrible last week, but even they should be looking at this Power team and think they can beat them.

They clearly lack personnel, but the same listlessness of last year was there, like it's all too hard. Really weird for round 1 in a winnable game. When opposition teams get a sniff of that they get emboldened and take control like North did.

Just me, or should Horne-Francis be showing a lot more by now? Fifth year in the comp, Darcy, Callaghan, Daicos and NWM all certainly gone past him.

At this point wouldn't take him over Rachele
Supposedly a couple weeks ago he had some sort of foot injury, I suspect he is trying to play through it, but if that's going to be the output not really worth it.

Did Marshall break his ankle? Or a very serious syndesmosis injury.

Poor buggy. Just coming back from a long injury lay off as well.
Probably need to have scans but it looked like the classic syndemosis type incident with another player falling over the extended foot.

He had a foot fracture last year, ended his season, had surgery, plate inserted. The plate was removed early because of complications (in Dec). Played his first game against us at Alberton, lasted 1 qtr as was feeling pain.

Could just be a fitness issue at the moment.

Port are absolutely abysmal and it's been obvious for years that list is ****ed. There's just no spread of talent through the team.
I don't think they are as bad as they looked, were some "interesting" selections too. However while their top end talent is very good and will carry them at times, a lot of their list is made up of very late draft picks, rookie picks and recycled cast off's. Very low percentage way to build a list. Interesting that in Carrs first offseason they continued to eschew the draft and bring in 3 fringe players instead (and some 2nd tier comp players)They will be lucky next couple off-season though with Dougie Cochrane and then Zemes Pilot via NGA.

From watching the weekends games, one thing I noticed that I think teams will try to exploit eventually, is if you run into the protected area, you will get told to stand. But players are being allowed to run into the protected zone corridor side, cutting off the corridor or 45 degree kick option and still only getting told to stand. They are several metres away from where the mark would be, and several metres corridor side of where the mark would be. I'd expect coaches to be all over this during the week. Happened all weekend. Where previously you had stay miles away from the protected area otherwise it would instantly be a 50 metre penalty, especially when coming from behind, now players are being allowed to do it as long as they stop and stand when the umpire yells stand. Have to see how it evolves and if the AFL do anything about it.
Yeah stand rule says it's meant to be a 10 metre box in all directions but I don't see any umpires policing it though unless they interfere with the kickers run up.

Reminded me of this:

Losing Butters would be a disaster. All of a sudden their star studded midfield consists of Rozee and JHF, the former that has shown can’t perform when given attention.

Maybe Cochrane comes on but how many high rated players even just from SA never reached those pre-draft hype.

Often seems to takes a season when coming back from such long term injury to really hit top form again. I think it's a bit of needing to regain confidence in the body again.

My point is what's the benefit of giving away a bloke who might be the best player in the comp in the hope that you'll be able to secure a guy who one day, if all goes well, might get as good as Butters is now.

Port are really in a precarious position.
If, sorry when, they lose Butters their only heart and soul player is gone.
Their other two best players in Rozee and JHF, while talented, and not consistent and don't give 100 every game. Butters is the type of player who you want your young kids to train with, learn from and play alongside.
His loss will be massive.

They don't have a talented list, and their kids are proberbly the least capable of any list on the AFL, thanks to the club trading out top picks chasing that final piece of the puzzle.
To then have the next three to four drafts diluted by Tassie, it bodes even worse.

They didnt realise that Kenny was getting the most out of that group, and they will realise this after Carr's first couple of seasons.

Now while I write all this with a smile on my face, I also shudder because we know just how much they whinge, complain, cry foul, demand, beg and show their extreme entitlement when they are down.
They nearly destroyed the SANFL last time, and the AFL dont know what's coming.
