They had to be very inventive. The best one was when the ump suckered Anderson into an HTB by a play-on uncertainty, and then was very quick with the 50 when Anderson objected.

I know it is about the cricket, but it does bring up a [point that has annoyed me forever.
How many times do we need to blow a siren before an AFL game starts?

Surely you blow the siren to start the game and that's it. Do we need one when the umpires come out? A 5 minute warning? A 3 minute warning? A 2 minute warning? It just seems to be blown over and over again for no real reason.

Twice with 2 minutes to go

Can't recall if there's a one minute warning too

It's the 45 second warning that annoys me

It's interesting because if you compare to what many say about Bradman (who also got a state funeral) - many though he was a nasty piece of work.

Warne's was very loyal to his friends & family... & put plenty of his time back into cricket, including any young spinner he came across.

His main character flaw (which he openly admitted) is he was a womaniser... but is that a reason to not give him a State funeral? No DV or other troubles with the law like some other high profile sportsman.

He was loved my much of the population & many in Victoria would like an opportunity to say farewell & thanks for the great memories.

My original comment about him not being “worthy” had nothing to do with him as a bloke. It was all about the prioritising sports heroes and personality. everybody - man woman and child has flaws.

You can excuse the top 3 for being in development areas. The next 3 Vic clubs are the leaches that should not be in the league. Surprised Melbourne got such a good deal. They should have to start to pay some back.

And let's not get started on Port Adelaide. All their hooey about reducing debt and their fantastic financial results. We all know they're on the handout list. Below them is only Sydney (still a development area) and then the genuine big clubs from footy states.

The gap in funding and the extent of the socialised model was evident in a table, obtained by The Age, that showed what the profit and loss position of the 18 clubs would be, from 2017 until 2020, with and without variable funding.
It showed that West Coast, who made a monstrous profit after the 2018 flag, would have an aggregate profit of over $32 million ($8 million plus per year) without variable funding, and that under the same scenario the top six clubs would have averaged more than $3 million in profits, but that only eight clubs would be in the black.
The figures showed St Kilda would have lost $32.6 million, Melbourne $19.1 million, Port Adelaide $14.56 million, Brisbane Lions $35.2 million and Gold Coast and GWS would have had aggregate losses of $45.2 million and $50 million, respectively.

The 3 minute warning got replaced with a 5 minute warning (single siren blast) about 10 years ago (this is also the cue for ground staff to take down the nets behind the goals).

So it's one when the umps come out (basically for the timekeepers and umpires to acknowledge each other), the one with 5 minutes to go, then 2 for 2 minutes, and 1 for 1 minute.

We're not the only sport that does this - basketball uses a siren in a similar fashion.

The dumbest use of a siren I've seen is in the Super Netball - they sound a siren 5 times when there's 5 minutes left in a quarter (it's to indicate the 2 point line is in play, but it's still annoying).
