I think at worse they just won't let it go through and Brisbane will be stuck with Joe on the salary cap for the big dollars.

That they are even raising a revised contract though should be enough to trigger an investigation into the dealings that went on as they knew damn well when they signed him on the money they did that Essendon were getting top end compo at the expense of the rest of the comp

Hahaha the AFL giving draft sanctions to Essendon? They didn't even strip them of pick 1 when half their side was banned for drug cheating

That still riles me to this day. Their only "punishment" for drug cheating was to basically write off a year in which they weren't a challenger anyway.

From that year they got a free hit at a lot of fringe/top up players to see who was AFL quality, some of whom are still on their list now. And a free hit at Pick 1. They got a free year of tanking without needing to tank.

The AFL sent their kid to bed without dessert and then took them to Cold Rock Ice Creamery and said get whatever you want the next day to make up for it.

What should the FA rules be? When should a player who moves via FA be able to sign another contract?

It's still changing the terms of what was offered to him as a free agent.

Players should still be able to sign an extension, but the terms of the previous FA agreement should be honoured in that new deal.

What is happening here from what I am aware is that Brisbane are attempting to change that original deal and lower the amount of money via a new deal.

IMO its quite simple, if a trade happens between teams that engineers a compo pick - then no change to that contract until it comes to the end. Otherwise you get this scenario where it was set up on a shorter term for big money to ensure Essendon don't match to engineer a band 1 compo pick, then after a year, they look to amend the contract for a better spread of terms across a longer period...which if done on trade night would likely not have got Essendon band 1 compo

If it was a brand new contract that kicked in after the one he is on, then it should be fine but that is not what it seems to be. Any changing of any terms of his current one should be a big fat no from the AFL as the whole point was to be able to secure him, they had to pay up big over a shorter term. They may not have got him had band 1 not been triggered and Essendon decided to match
