No teams from either WA or SA play the first week of the new season

No football played in either WA or SA the first two weeks of the season

I get that juggling 18 teams playing 23 games each across all eight states and territories wouldn’t be easy but there are some fundamental steps the AFL could take to ensure some level of equity

An opening round involving only 10 of the 18 clubs gives those participating clubs an extra bye over the course of the season and specifically excludes the two clubs who travel the most and would benefit from the extra week

Six of the sides who play opening round, play an opponent in R1 who didn’t play giving those sides an important hitout to dust off the cobwebs. Surely the AFL could ensure the sides from opening round play against each other in R1 to eliminate any advantage, real or perceived

The same goes for the midseason byes (which are extended over too many weeks btw) where a team coming off a bye plays a side who played the week before.

Anyway, the first weekend of football should include all 18 teams, anything else will always remain ****ing stupid

Yeah, introducing a wildcard round to finals is nonsensical, not least because it totally misrepresents the concept of what wildcard means.

And the format makes it all but impossible to win from 7th or 8th as those teams now have to play 5 games, without a bye, to win the premiership

But the AFL will sit back and count the cash from the two extra “finals” and decree it a success because **** fairness and integrity, cash is king

Yeah, our team doesnt play for 1.5 weeks! What a buzz kill. Just feels like pre-season to me.

Yeah, opening round is dumb enough as it is without having any games in WA/SA for two weeks to top it off.

The AFL should be fortifying support in traditional footy states rather than taking it for granted. It's a real blinkered East Coast focus, and it's another example of a poorly run competition.

Women's soccer in Perth. Not sure why they couldn't F-off to an actual rectangular stadium for a day so we could play football at our football stadium (maybe in rnd 0 so it wouldn't impact the bigger games at the end of the tournament).

They could have round 1 stretch over a week and a half, and have the same impact without needing byes for teams later.

Thursday Night - Game 1
Friday Night - Game 2
Sat Arvo - Game 3
Sat Night - Game 4
Sunday arvo - Game 5
Monday Night - Game 6
Thursday Night - Game 7
Friday Night - Game 8
Sat Night - Game 9

Then gives everyone at least 7 days rest before round 2. Could even move the Monday Night game to Sat Arvo/Sunday Arvo.

Under the model above, every team gets a reasonably primetime game without any overlap from other games, and keeps footy on the TV longer without ****ing the fixtures.

Unpopular opinion but I have no issue with it being nearly impossible to win it from 7th or 8th. Finish higher on the ladder if you want a better chance imo

Bye before the finals sucks, Im glad theres footy going to be played. Having those games count as "finals" is dumb though
