I like what the AFL has done to the COLA. By taking control of who recieves it they can ensure that the lowest paid players (i.e. the ones who need it most) are the ones who get it and the marquee players like Buddy and Tippett don't benefit from it.

It looks like we have a soft cap on FD spending now too. Over $9.5mil in spending (not including player payments I assume) and clubs will pay 75c in tax for every dollar spent. I don't mind the idea, it allows clubs to spend big on new innovations if they really feel its going to give them a competitive edge but it discourages spending that the shitty clubs can't match.

I still think any form of COLA would be exploited, the club would just tell its lower paid players "we will give you 10% less because COLA would top up your salary". Then this would allow them to funnel those savings into Tippet and Buddy like contracts

Common sense.

Well at least 80% of common sense anyway.

And I was for some form of equalisation to keep the competition stron but after the way smorgan and the like has had his tongue up VLAD's shitter all year in critisizing essedon I dont want to see 1 cent of anything I spend on the AFL go to the bulldogs.

They might, but 10% of a small contract isn't going to be enough to create massive space in the cap for more star players. If they lowball 10 players they might end up with an extra $200k, which is peanuts compared with the extra $1 million they've enjoyed until now. And in return they may find that their lower paid players are less inclined to stick around and start looking for opportunities interstate.

Hence the point of the COLA in the first place, to help keep people in Sydney who want to return home.
I mean what they're doing now is better than what it has been but I still think it can be abused.
And I dont think they're really low-balling players, just offering them their market value a little bit differently
eg. go to another club for 150k or sign back on for 130k and cola will kick in 20k

there is literally almost no difference between 10 players having a pool of 200K and 45 players having a pool of 900K (or thereabouts). Eddie did a very good job in making COLA seem like a very big deal, but ultimately, either way, it's no big deal. It's only a big deal if you believe the Swans have lied in their contracts and not spilt up the money evenly, in which case............

And also apparently the COLA was based off the cost of living difference between melbourne and sydney.. If thats the case you would expect that the teams in Adelaide and SE QLD would have money taken out of their cap as COL is less than melbourne. Pretty sure perths as expensive as Melb to live in

The cost of being entertained in Adelaide is pretty high and not usually included in those calculations. Plane trips to Melbourne for a bit of nightlife don't come cheap.

Property in Perth and Melbourne is now more expensive than Sydney. I spend a decent chunk of the year in Melbourne and grew up there and there's no difference in the price of groceries and beer is certainly cheaper in Sydney. COLA is pure BS. Nothing more than a leg up so the Swans will retain their fair weather fans - not that that's news to anybody.

How do property rental prices compare?

It's possible I ran my mouth off too early as it turns out just today they released the most expensive cities in the world rankings and Sydney was one spot above Melbourne. A month or so ago there was an article announcing that Melbourne had overtaken Sydney for property prices but I'm having trouble finding it. According to these: http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/city_result.jsp?country=Australia&city=Sydney, http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/city_result.jsp?country=Australia&city=Melbourne, rent is more expensive in Sydney.

Regardless I dont see any other salary cap league in the world that has a COL basis in their cap calculations
I don't understand why brisbane had such as exodues (other than poor head office). If I couldn't play for essendon, I would jump at the chance to play for GC or Brisbane based purely off location

It really is quite simple. Say Tippett would be getting offered 700k to be coming to Sydney even without COLA. If someone can please tell me why he actually needs that extra $60,000+ then I am all ears. If this revised COLA is what I think it is, then that $60,000 could be far better spread across 2-3 young players still finding their feet in the AFL and who would actually need to watch how much they spend, as their careers at that stage are far less assured, generally speaking. For what it's worth, I don't think anyone would have a problem with this kind of thing, provided it is only for the players at the lower-end of the contract scale.

I've lived extensively in both cities and while Sydney rental prices are higher, it is entirely possible to live in a nice area while earning only $50 to $60k. Cost of living is a complete non-issue for everyone playing for Sydney that isn't in their first couple of years or on the rookie list.

At the end of the day, the COLA was purely designed to help the Swans be more successful and develop the game in NSW. In no way was it designed to offset cost of living pressures.
