But doesn't change the facts that footballers are out of step with social mores. And Dylan Roberton nearly lost his career when his gf/wife wanted to return to Victoria with their newly born child.
He was never going to lose his career. Far too talented over it. Somebody was always going to take him

Definitely talented enough - But he got picked up at the last minute.

It seems fairly obvious to me that Bootsma hasn't just been sacked for this latest incident alone, but rather that it's the culmination of several things.

Not sure if the calls of tokenism are entirely fair, though yes, it is easier to make an example out of a spud than a star.

"Mattingly, I thought I told you to trim those sideburns?"

Phone eloquently explained the difference - There is a reason that Weller got concussion - That is force - Goodes wasn't cited because there was insufficient force to constitute a reportable offence.
Yeah exactly, the force was the difference, not whether or not Selwood had the ball.

A number of Aussies are doing OK at this age, but still dont have babies until the 30's. Isn't the average age for marriage - Woman is close to 30 and men is around 32. AFL players are definitely different beasts.
The answer is simple.

Footballers are generally dumb.

Dumb people generally breed younger.

force and outcome both come into effect (im not a fan of outcome deciding punishments tho, rather it be the action)
having said that, I dont think the difference between them was 3 weeks...

Watched a bit of the Chooseday Night game with my brother.

Both of us started doing impromptu Dwayne commentary whenever he touched the ball, but it begs the question... was that commentary going through his head at the time? Did he think he was going to go for a chaos ball from the paint, for instance? Did he mentally steel himself to collect the ball off some hands... was he conscious of time on?

Most importantly, if Devine or Blight ever brought him off the bench a quarter or so into the game, did he loudly declare to everyone "I'VE JOINED YOU LATE."?

My whole family's pretty well off. On both sides that is. My cousin is 22 and is expecting her first baby in 2 and a half weeks (it'll be closer to a month though, my mum, uncle and aunt were all about 2 weeks late and so were all their kids). It's getting frequently less uncommon to have babies at a young age.

I was watching a bit of that coverage but what struck me the most was how much better I liked certain aspects of the game back then..

Namely you barely notice the umpires or their friggen whistles.. you don't have to hear their inane chatter to the players about 'back 2 metres, back 2 metres jakey'.. the 15m penalty seemed far fairer for minor offences.. a penalty without changing the entire complexion of the game.. for the all their efforts to 'speed up' the game.. the game in 1987 seemed about 10x faster despite the poorer skills.. how many contested marks were taken? Plenty!!! The game was played by men, not boys and it created a lot more contests.. holding the ball was paid irrespective of whether the ball was 'knocked out' during the tackle.. essentially if you take possession and don't get rid of it after prior opportunity you are GONE.

Anyway.. I just found it enjoyable to watch.. far more so than some of the crap dished out this year.

I think the 90s was the best mix of everything, but it's amazing how much faster the ball moved back then. None of this uncontested guff.

I watched a bit of it and took particular notice of the commentary late in the game when Geelong got on fast break out of defence and the commentator said there was "only" 6 players in the Geelong forward line.

Ahhh, back to the days or yore where footy positions actually meant something.

I agree.. I think the 90's had that perfect balance of professionalism/increased fitness and skills and still fast ball movement and contests..

Our team of 2000 was probably the pinnacle of that.. and naturally the response was to go more defensive which the Lions did to win their first flag.. and within 5 years we had the Swans style dominating and that was all she wrote for the game we love.

I still would love umpires to go back into the background.. quiet and out of shot.

I've never really paid much attention to Bootsma, but was he actually any good, or show signs of promise. Perhaps someone Richmond could recycle.

Harker on the Carlton board said he was very talented. TBH I've never watched him.
