Yeah I meant to mention this last night. I've seen him a few times now and I can't work out what the big deal is. Can't seem to do anything well. He's just big.
I think he's let down by a lack of fitness and experience. Once he has the fitness to play his role properly (and the Doggies have enough rucks that he doesn't need to do that) I think he'll settle in quite nicely.

Has he been injured? He's played the last few games I've seen I think. What's his role? Key forward? I was a bit surprised when I saw him in the ruck but even more surprised when it became clear he appears to have no idea how to do that either.

Some of this is going to sound stupid but I am going to say it anyway.

I think that many have been seduced by Stringer's goals and that not enough attention is being paid to the way he actually plays and, what I think is the flow-on effect of his style being, the scoring inefficiency of the Dogs.

In reality if Stringer was the size of the small forward that he is in a structural sense he would not be talked up to the extent that he is. The comparisons, inherent in that stupid poll on the Fox Footy program, with Hogan are ridiculous and have absolutely no account of the way that the Melbourne structure is built around Hogan who brings others into the game with the way that he presents at the ball up on to the wing and otherwise provides a target at half forward. Daniher does the same thing for us.

The problem that the Dogs now have is that Stringer is clearly king dick in their forward line but if they are to become efficient he is going to have to become second or third behind Redpath and Boyd (based on what they have available) who will draw the ball and control it in the air.

It's a glorification of the Alwyn-at-CHF approach, no? Structure around your best forward, if not your most appropriate one. There's obviously a tipping point where that becomes counter-productive, but it does depend on the degree of competence in your classically-tall options.

I think they bought him back in when Redpath went down and before that be was in the VFL trying to improve his tank. I get the feeling that they want him to be their main KPF but with their ruck stocks a mess they need him to play ruck/fwd which probably doesn't suit his style or his lack of fitness. No idea why Will Minson isn't getting games though, surely he'd have to be better than Roughead.

I wouldn't judge him too harshly on this year because circumstances have forced him to be moved around a lot which is bad for almost any player, and also because he's a 20yo KPF and even the best of those are a bit shaky in their first handful of years in the AFL.

Reckon it's more like the Crameri situation
